Just did a preorder on Steam. Great value at £28.48 with the 'contract extension'

    Pretty good day for SI:

I didn't get 17 either and was the first time since Champ Man '92

I might just get 18 though, nearly caved on 17 a few times.

On an epic FM16 save so didn't end up getting FM17 either.

Any big things expected? Have they given any indications or let anything slip re new features?

For a few years now the newer games just feel like a crappy DLC for an older version. Need to see big changes in the right direction in order to buy the full game.

I bought a shared account to play 16 and 17 and never regretted not having the full game. Hopefully they will do better this year.

They got a lot of hate for 17 although I enjoy it. Just looking at FM17 Steam reviews and they're mostly negative, SI have gave been lazy I can't remember the last big update they did every season is just a player update now.

That's FM 14, for season 13-14. I'm still occasionally playing my save on that, great game. Funny thing is you actually replace Moyes without him ever managing a game, instead of Fergie.

West Ham might be a good team to play as in this. Team of misfits, decent new stadium, needs sorting out.

Think I'll avoid this one. Haven't played one for years and know I'll get sucked into it again if I do. Could do with something a little less addictive in the same vein like LMA Manager from the PS1 days. FM is virtual crack once you start it :P

Don't get why people say it's just an updated version of the previous game. What do people really want them too add?

I think 4 of my 5 most played games on Steam are Football Manager games but I didn't play FM17 at all despite owning it and have only about 50 hours or so on 16. Really been off it for a while and I'm not itching for it again, don't know why.

I said it last year, but this might be the first one for a long time that I don't buy it. I eventually caved in with 17, but then I hardly played it.

Things that make it feel like a new game. I think people quite rightly complain that it is an update and not a new game.

The questions and answers in press conferences are still as they were in 2012. Players complaining about lack of minutes or wanting to move is done in the exact same way, using the exact same dialogue. Team talks and instructions are incredibly limited and again they use the exact same wording and have the same response. In lots of parts of the game, you are just selecting the same options that you have been doing for the last several years.

There's little reason for them to shake it up, because they are completely unrivalled. I doubt anyone could come along and make a management sim anywhere near as immersive and deep as FM. And I'm not even saying it's a bad game. It definitely isn't. It's very good. They're unrivalled because a competitor would struggle to make something even half as good. But for those who have played it for many years, it's a tad boring, and there's little reason to keep coming back to it unless there is something new and challenging about it. Otherwise you load it up and just keep doing the same things.

IMO, SI focus on the wrong things. I don't think the majority of FM players give a toss about the 3D engine, but that's what they keep striving to improve. Even at it's best, it looks like a PS1 game. It won't happen, because "if it ain't broke" but it needs a shake up to make it an unfamiliar challenge, otherwise people will get bored. People are already bored.

I agree with pretty much everything but I don't see what they could really do for people to think It's a new game. Things like press conferences will always get boring after a while I think. Not too bothered about the 3D engine as I always play on 2D just because that's how I've always seen a football manager game.

They do need to change the way the players constantly come to you complaining about lack of game time etc. It happens far too often.

I agree with that as well. That's probably the problem. I haven't a clue what should be added to it to make it feel fresh and new. But I do think it needs something. No idea what...

I always say I'll give this one a miss, but I bet I end up picking it up in a sale.

Totally agree. Although they were gimmicky as hell, at least LMA and FIFA manager brought variety. The depth was the biggest flaw of each but it was still better to have moderate competition vs no competition.

A resurgence of FIFA manager is the likeliest outcome given EA's finances but that still has very slim prospects given the immersion of manager mode in FIFA games themselves. They clearly feel the appetite isn't there any more.

Side note: wasn't the German market the biggest driving factor for FIFA manager anyway?

Picked up FM 16 for 5€ the other day. Been so long since I played FM I can't even recall roughly when it was.

I agree with alot that has been said about how it can really be improved because it covers everything you need and more.

The only things that can be changed are simply updates. Things like the dialogue in press conferences and even the pep talks can be updated so you have different options week in week out.

Also, I would like to see an option to deal with stadium merchandising or atleast be able to hire a stadium manager to deal with this. Although in general the income is not high, it is better than nothing. I enjoy this aspect of games like NBA 2K & NHL aswell.

It's football manager though. That's why they don't have stuff like this and probably never will. The football manager wouldn't be involved in that kind of thing. I assume NBA and NHL are more into the general manager thing but football isn't.

    Pre ordered the game.

Looks like this game is very cheap (on steam) in India compared to Europe. It's around 18 pounds, with 25% discount it;s around 14 pounds.

From time to time I carry on my old journeyman save from FM 13. I'm in the season 2028/29 now and most recently got sacked at Altamira in Mexico who in real life were disbanded in 2015.

I tried FM 17 but really can't get into the newer games. Feels like there's too much meaningless cluster to get through and it's not fun anymore, for me at least. However one feature that I wish they kept in the game was tactical sliders. Sliders were the best way to create a way of working with what you have whether they're a bunch of pissed dimwits or champions of Europe. The tactical shouts just feel like you're winging it.

Sliders are still there just not visible. The tactical creator has been dumbed down in order to appeal a broader audience. I find that once I get my team playing the way I want I can surf through seasons pretty quickly.
