Interesting article from Four Four Two on the fifty best managers in world football.

Unsurprisingly Pep is considered the best even though he could never win a Champions League without Messi whilst managing clubs with some of the best resources in the world (City and Bayern).

The rest of the list makes interesting reading. Mourinho is 25th (probably too high for some on here, ;)). Zidane is second. Julian Nagelsmann (at 31 years of age) is 9th although his star is waning a bit this season but has undoubtedly done an amazing job at Hoffenheim. Thomas Tuchel, whom I consider completely over rated, is 20th.

The highest placed English manager is Southgate at 40th with only two others on the list - Howe (41st) and Dyche (47th).

Sill makes for interesting reading. . . .

1 - Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)
    2 - Zinedine Zidane
3 - Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)
    4 - Max Allegri (Juventus)
    5 - Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)
    6 - Didier Deschamps (France)
    7 - Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham)
    8 - Maurizio Sarri (Chelsea)
    9 - Julian Nagelsmann (Hoffenheim)
    10 - Ernesto Valverde (Barcelona)

    11 - Tite (Brazil)
    12 - Leonardo Jardim
13 - Eusebio Di Francesco (Roma)
14 - Lucien Favre (Borussia Dortmund)
    15 - Marcelino (Valencia)
    16 - Luis Enrique (Spain)
    17 - Janne Anderson (Sweden)
    18 - Antonio Conte
    19 - Phillip Cocu
    20 - Thomas Tuchel (PSG)

    21 - Zlatko Dalic (Croatia)
22 - Paulo Fonseca (Shaktar Donetsk)
23 - Gian Piero Gasperini (Atalanta)
    24 - Pablo Machin (Sevilla)
25 - Jose Mourinho (Manchester United)
    26 - Domenico Tedesco (Schalke)
    27 - Jose Bordalas (Getafe)
    28 - Renato Gaucho (Gremio)
29 - Niko Kovac (Bayern Munich)
    30 - Bruno Genesio (Lyon)

    31 - Unai Emery (Arsenal)

    35 - Marco Giampaolo (Sampdoria)
36 - Adi Hutter (Eintracht Frankfurt)
    37 - Abdullah Avci (Istanbul)
    38 - Stefano Pioli (Fiorentina)
    39 - Luciano Spalletti (Internazionale)
    40 - Gareth Southgate (England)

    41 - Eddie Howe (Bournemouth)
42 - Quique Seiten (Real Betis)
    43 - Rudi Garcia (Marseille)
    44 - Abel Ferreira (Braga)

Wasn't that long ago that Mourinho would have been at least top 3. What a drop.

Ignoring the nonsense about having Mourinho as low as 25th, Machin isn't - and has never - managed Valencia. He's the manager of Sevilla.

What's the criteria? Or is it based on opinion?

Arguably better managers than Mourinho lower than him.

Deschamps is never in the top 10. Tite 11th place is also a bit of a joke, Favre should be much higher. Stopped there.

Nice to see that they’ve so many managers who’ve won feck all in recent years above Jose.

    The list is a joke.

Is it justifiable that Zidane is second?

Seems like an odd question to ask of a manager who has just won the Champions League 3 times in a row.

Last year Pep won the league cup, top of the league and got to quarter finals of the CL.
Jose got runner up in the league, last 16 of the CL and runner up in FA Cup final and he 24 places below Pep?

Isn't it a form guide? The best over the last 12 months. Not best overall.

Put most of them in struggling sides with no funds & I expect most would fail.

Benitez is quite high for 34th.

I know he's operating with a shower of donkeys at Newcastle but I think he is living on past glories to be that high.

Mourinho's one of the most successful managers around. The list only remotely makes sense if it is on about form over the last 12 months and ignores everything before then.

Mourinho probably makes the top 10 based on his past success. He's dropping between 3-5 places every single year though, as better managers are coming through and building their resumes.

They've got the top 5 right.

Someone who would actually be a decent shout for a struggling side (say Pulis, or Allardyce) would probably fall apart within a month at Barcelona or Real Madrid. Different expectations and requirements IMO.

He has spent over €400m to be lower than Bournemouth in the premier league at the moment.

He does deserve a higher position though.

Not sure when he was last unanimously in the top 3. His CL record has been poor for a very long time now.

Would be interesting to see the list of highest paid managers in the world too. Quite a few on there stealing a living.

I know he's already on his way to another club, but I would love to see a young, fresh and forward-thinking manager like Nagelsmann at United.

This list doesn't make sense at all. If they are taking more than a year then Jose should be there, if they are taking last 12 months then I don't know why Tuchel is in the list as he wasn't coach last season and only managed PSG for 10-12 games. Also no way Howe should be below Benitez.

    Overall just a shit list.

RB Leipzig have him signed up from next season.

I'd say he'll end up in England after that.

Tuchel has a reputation in the sport for being a great manager. He did a reasonable job at Mainz but I wasn't overtly impressed with him at Dortmund as he failed to put it up to Bayern or come anywhere near them.

He must have a great PR agent.

Whether its based on long term or the last few months its a load of rubbish. Mourinho is the most successful manager in the game, and he just guided us to 2nd. Like most things with modern football 'journalism', it's probably just a ploy to generate clicks from everybody's favourite meal ticket.

I really dislike Mourinho but the aversion to giving credit where it's due on here staggers me. If this is snapshot of the last 2-3 years (where Mou has won v little by his standards), Zidane and Allegri should be top 2. If you're looking over a career you can't ignore Mou.

If you're looking at it over career, extra praise should be given to managers like Simeone, Klopp (Dortmund), Jardim (Monaco) & Mou (Porto/Inter) who won major trophies with 'inferior' teams/won monopoly leagues.
