2017 has been a pretty good year for gaming. Probably the best year since 2008 for me.

We had a good first few months to the year with Zelda, Yakuza Zero, Horizon, Nioh, Nier, Persona 5, RE 7 and few others that I cannot be arsed naming. We had Mario Odyssey, Destiny 2, Wolfenstein, Evil Within 2, Cuphead, Shadow of War, AC Origins, Battlefront 2 and other games towards the end of this year.

I’m going to go predictably with Odyssey as my game of the year.

Biggest disappointment would be not a game, but Microsoft’s lack of exclusives. Sony and Nintendo have delivered this year. The X is a good console. It just needs good first party exclusives. I’m not really seeing anything in 2018 like Crackdown or State of Decay 2 that’s going to blow me away. I swear if they promise big news at E3 then give us Halo 6 and Gears 5, I am going to run you over @Alock1.

Most anticipated game for 2018 is obviously RDR2.

I'm going to go Zelda only because I haven't played Mario. Be interesting to see what people who have played both would pick.

Yet to play Zelda so I may revise this after Xmas.

I'd probably go for Odyssey too. Earlier in the year I would have been inclined to say Horizon but as great as it is I haven't finished it.

Honourable mention to the new solo mode that was added to Hearthstone. I've already put more hours into it over the weekend that most AAA games listed in the OP.

I'm only a few hours into breath of the wild, and fewer hours into super Mario odyssey...
And xenoblade arriving in a day or 2.

Until further notice, Nioh for the fun I've had.

Hardly played any of the new games to come out this year. Prey was pretty good though.
Apart from that, Fallout New Vegas gets a lifetime award from me, another run nearly completed after it was finally released DRM-free on GOG. Another ~70 hours into this game, it's still feckingtastic 7 years later.

If there's a consensus of say 10-20 games, then I can create a poll.

For me there is a comfortable top 4
In Nier, Horizon Zero Dawn, Legend of Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey.

Niers gameplay mechanics made it an excellent RPG whilst Horizon Zero Dawn had some excellent graphic design and very enjoyable gameplay. Zelda and Mario for me made the Nintendo Switch go from being an excellent idea to being a must have console.

Each games offers something unique to the genre and are breathtaking in one way or another.

For me though hands down it has to be The Legend of Zelda BOTW. From first emerging out onto the great plateau, to traversing a vibrant and stunning landscape with little guidance and utter freedom to experiment play and simply immerse yourself in a masterfully crafted environment I honestly can say that it is the best game I have played so far.

From a pure gameplay perspective the focus on player exploration and experimentation fits perfectly into the Zelda universe. It’s a game that wants you to play it creatively and urges you to enjoy yourself which IMO is the whole point of a video game. It gives you a complete release from reality and says “Give it a go” rather than no you must walk down corridor x and input button y.

This combined with outstanding visuals, the portability of the switch and the painstaking attention to detail in the game mechanics means it’s a 10/10 title and for me deserving of GOTY.

Zelda all day long. There's just nothing as well crafted as that.

Horizon, Odyssey, Nioh are all greats too. However second for me would be RE7 VR version. What a game that is.

I don't agree with giving any game 10/10. There's no such thing as a perfect game. Zelda certainly isn't one.

I don't think the 10/10 score is meant to portray perfection. It's just to say that the game in question is a masterpiece or is something essential that you must play.

Like you said, no game is "perfect". They all have their quibbles.

I would never go higher than a 9 for any game. Just my opinion, obviously. I'm not a fan of how games are rated these days. People think a 7 = shit.

Then why bother grading out of 10 at all then, let's argue about whether something can be 9/9 instead.

10/10 is indicative of state of the art and particularly in video games what defines the art changes over time particularly with graphical advances and increased processing power and means of interaction. There would have been a time when Elite on the BBC, Mission Impossible on the C64, Sonic on the Megadrive or Doom on the PC would have ranked 10/10 and Zelda is just as worthy. It's the closest to a completely immersive game that I've ever come and I've been playing for close to 40 years across a whole range of machines and technologies.

Definitely Zelda for me this year although I've still to play Wolfenstein or Horizon which I should remedy if I manage a break after Christmas.

Well the scoring system would kind of break down at that point then as the 10 would represent something unachievable and therefore has no real business being there. Which would then be...weird.

But yeah, it seems you have a problem with the scoring system. I would agree. I don't particularly like scores as it almost detracts from the game. People look at the number and immediately make up their mind on what the game is like. They lose the nuance of the game and the game review.

i think more and more outlets are moving away from that system for that very reason.

We don't have to grade out of 10. We can grade out of 5. Or 100. I still wouldn't ever give a perfect score to a game because no game is perfect.

    I hated Mission Impossible, btw.

Don't have a Switch so can't say Zelda.

My GOTY would have to be Persona 5, with Horizon a close second.

I meant Impossible Mission but I suspect you do too, it's sad how dated it looks now but at the time the voice synthesiser was a complete novelty and the combination of a smooth platformer and puzzle game had me hooked. Didn't even pay for it as I got it as part of a bundle of prizes from CVG for holding the UK record on Way of the Exploding Fist (or persistence with the irritating leg sweep as it should have been called).

I do think a game can be perfect at a given time or moment in the same way as a film or piece of music can, I will still find it impossible to rank my all time favourites though as time, environment and mood change the way we perceive things.

I did, but I doubted myself and thought you were correct.

I hated it because I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to do, and most of the rooms looked very similar. Found it to be very obtuse. I loved Way of the Exploding Fist, though. Paid £1.99 for it and was blown away. A budget IK+ but well worth it. The sequel was disappointing, sadly.

    What record did you hold?

So a rating scale of out of 10 but you would never give a game a 10? Personally I don't see 10/10 as perfect anyway - all games can be improved - but 10/10 is saying the game is incredible.

On topic - my vote goes to Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. I'm obsessed with it.

    Zelda BOTW a close second.

No, sir. I think handing out perfect scores is a relatively modern thing. I don't recall Zzap 64 or Crash handing them out for the same reason I wouldn't (I'm sure someone will now destroy me and show that they did).

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you and others are arguing, I just don't agree with it. No big deal.

I haven't played too many new games this year, still playing a lot of catch-up (and it's only getting worse). From what I've played:

    1. Horizon Zero Dawn
    2. Resident Evil 7 VR

That's about as far as I get. Give me a few more years and I might have a more exhaustive answer.

I held the highest score on their game chart for 12 months and was invited down to London for their annual bash and playoff finals, unfortunately it fell at the same time as my O levels and common sense prevailed, had a cracking summer though when a parcel full of games and T shirts arrived as consolation.

Agree with that, it's amazing. Although I should mention that the only other game I played that came out this year was Mario Odyssey and I'm only two hours in, so far it hasn't really gripped me yet.

I really haven't played many games this year. In fact, from the games listed in the OP, i played RE7 a bit, and Horizon. I actually platinumed Horizon so i would have to go for that.

Although i'm having Mario Odyssey and Zelda for Christmas so that could change.

Id like to throw Doki-Doki there as well

I hate anime visual novels but this one was something else. For me the first game since The Witcher 3 which sends you thru a rollercoaster of emotions like nothing else

Also impressive that the creative team were like 3-4 ppl. And that it has 4 ign's best of 2017 nominations including best pc game award

If you havent heard of it please dont read any spoiler, download the game (its free) and start reading. You wont regret it

From what I played, I'll say Horizon. There are some games that I yet to play though, as Evil Within 2 and AC Origins, but I think no chance of them beating Horizon.

    Weird shout... World of Warcraft.

Sure, the latest expansion came out last year, but MMO's are judged on their content, and this year in WoW we've had Nighthold, Broken Shore, Tomb of Sargeras, Argus, and now Antorus.
