Think you'd have a hard time bettering Giggs/Scholes/Keane/Beckham.

Busquets-xaviesta is the no-brainer choice really.

THAT Barca team still would have had 70% + possession against us.

    Busquets
    Xavi Iniesta

    Cerezo Falcao
    Zico Socrates

    Fernandez
    Giresse Tigana
    Platini

    Garrincha Didi Zito Zagallo

    Jairzinho Clodoaldo Gérson Rivellino

    Pirlo
    Gattuso Seedorf
    Kaka

    Are the obvious candidates..

Closer to home, Beckham Keane Scholes Giggs, Ljungberg Viera Petit Pires, Makelele Essien Lampard, Mascherano-Alonso-Gerrard are some of my favourites from recent years.

Martinez Kroos and Schweinsteiger was glorious whilst it last.. proper powerhouse midfield.

I really liked Alonso/Modric/Di Maria for that one season.

Same, it was wonderfully dynamic.. Tiki-taka beater that one. Di Maria in that LAM midfield role was a game-changer.. world class in that position.

    :(

I remember at one time I thought this will be our midfield for years, alas the false promises.

I don't think anything beats Brazil '82 except their own arrogance and complacency. Individually and collectively it is a preposterous midfield.

Yeh, but they'll still try, people have short memories.

I wouldn't look past that myself.

To be fair, the midfield did its job in that team.

They had a penchant for switching off or taking the piss as it suited them. They were absurdly good.

Some great ones mentioned already but would add in the Germany 90s midfield of Matthaeus/Haessler/Thon/Moeller/Littbarski (with Effenberg and Schuster backups ffs!) into the equation.

The great Milan midfield of Rijkaard-Albertini-Donadoni-Gullit is worth a mention.

Also hate to say it but Petit-Vieira-Pires-Overmars was pretty tasty.

Denmark took Soren Lerby, Frank Arnesen, Michael Laudrup & Jan Molby to the 1986 WC & a couple of water carriers I think Berggren & Bertelsen

McDermott, Souness, Kennedy and Case were quite handy I'm afraid & the later ones with the likes of Wark, Whelan & McMahon

the comments underneath this article suggest some quite handy ones

As great as it is to see some of these old school midfields, let's be real:

    Busquets
    Xavi----Iniesta

Was a level above, mainly because they had the Greatest central midfield player of all time (Xavi), an all time great (Iniesta) whilst Busquets was tailor made for the system.

Most of the best ones have already been mentioned, would also say Casemiro-Kroos-Modric, compliment and work so well together and dominated European club football for 2 years.

    Pirlo-Vidal-Marchisio-Pogba had very good balance.

Wrong positioning though, Pirlo at the base and Gattuso higher.

Can't really call them the best seeing as they didn't even qualify for the knock out stages of the WC.
