You could have called up roberto dinamite, but at the end of the day, without careca, you just needed a big body to play lay-offs for Zico, Eder, Socrates, Falcao and Junior...

I like when people ask Zico until this day in his interviews why we lost to Italy, and he use to reply with a very simple answer: "because Italy was good too and they can win us"

    Vieira Zidane Makelele.

*Edit. The only trio that can rival that post 1998 is Xavi Iniesta Buisquets.
The other other ones are just shot of something.
Man for man this is as great as it gets

For United or including the rest of the World? For United, yes most probably. For the rest of the world at all times, they would not even get a mention

    I beg to differ.
I am 43 years of age and I saw many teams play against that midfield and most of the time we'd cut through our opponents like a hot knife through butter.
I still remember what we did to Juve, in the CL, in Turin (who were acknowledged, along with us, as being the best club team in the World). We effectively gave them a 2-0 head start (Juve were fantastic, so preventing them from scoring was always going to be difficult), then we came back scoring 3 goals.
When you have a midfield which includes Becks and Keane, with A.Cole and D.Yorke as our attackers, who in that game, were passing the ball to eachother right in front of their goal, we could steam roll virtually any team. And I do mean, ANY team...as Juve found out that day.

EDIT: just to note that Giggs was injured for the game I was referring to. And Scholes did not start, though was subbed on. If we added those 2 to the line up, heaven knows what would've happened.

    Check this:

By the way, a fantastic diamond by LVG deserves a mention:
    Litmanen
    Davids - Seedorf

You are just talking about one match at one period. They may have been the best midfield during that period but I said if it is all over the world at all periods, they would not even get a mention.

Our 99 midfield was pretty special, so I would definitely put that up there, it had everything that you could want in an ideal midfield setup.

It's certainly the best midfield United have ever had, and quite possibly the best to come out of Britain. It had absolutely everything you could want from a midfield didn't it?

    Makelele Vieira Zidane

Makelele is the greatest #6 of all time
Vieira is the greatest box to box of all time
Zidane is the greatest #10 of all time

Nobody can compete with this midfield

Disagree. It isn't the best midfield ever, but it is a globally recognised one IMO.

Beckham, Giggs and Keane in particular were in the top 2/3 in their position in the world during that era of football and the weak link was a young up and coming Paul Scholes, which says it all.

You do not realise what you are saying. They may be the best midfield of their era but that does not mean that during different eras they were among the best. To be honest apart from 99 they did not do much. 99 did depend on a lot of other players including a fantastic keeper, a world class centre back and 4 fantastic strikers.

Souness and Lee were in the mix before McMahon arrived. Wark was an attacker if I remember correctly. I forgot about Kennedy. What a masterstroke that was by Paisley. He bought him from Arsenal were he was a forward and played him in a deeper role.

Even the WC winning Italian midfield of Conti, Tardelli, Antognioni and Oriali were much better than the above mentioned United midfield. I am a United fan as well.

    Busquets' football brain and passing

Busquets is the best defensive midfielder since at least Rijkaard, and has a very good case to be the best DM ever.

Pirlo and Gattuso won a World Cup together too. A very underrated duo, they complimented each other perfectly.

You can say with a straight face that Makelele was a better player than Rijkaard, Vieira was better than Matthäus and Zidane was better than Maradona?
Don't think that many would agree with you.

He is the best DM for that particular system but he lacks something else to be considered GOAT in the respective position, imo. Look at Rijkaard - he excelled in different systems —Sacchi, Capello, van Gaal, for different Dutch sides, playing different role.

The system we played under Lucho in 2015 was much more direct than the football we played under Pep in 2011. We actually had less possession than Bayern in the semifinal of 2015. We beat them on the counter.

Busquets has nothing left to prove. He's won the treble with different managers and under different systems. He's won everything with the national team. There's really nothing else he can do anymore.

Redondo was fantastic, a great choice, but Busquets is better.

A deserving deputy to Xavi and Iniesta and an excellent fit to that system, at best. As much credit as I would give him for being able to keep up with those two and provide the anchor which could be comparable here, he's not fit to lace El Principe's boots when it comes to elegance, flair and the mental blueprint of the game going on.

The best is the Barca trio but you’d think football started 15 years ago with some of these shouts.
