Has there been a better referee since his retirement?
Why hasn't refereeing hasn't naturally evolved from this guy?
The EPL could do with 10 of Collina to make it fair.

Perhaps the most consistently brilliant referee I've seen. Despite near celebrity status, he was never the 'star of the show' unlike Clattenburg or Michael Oliver, instead he was efficient and facilitated the play. Always in control.

He was a great ref because he was consistent and fair, and he never took shit from players who respected him because they knew he would be consistent and fair.

He looked like he demanding respect and it seemed players gave it.
I remember him being criticised for disallowing an Everton goal in the CL qualifier, but there werent many cases of big mistakes broadcasted at a time when he was noted as the best known ref.

he's a cnut, trying to get respect from awarding penalties which are not, I don't like that kind of "strong" referee..

That's the key, the two refs you mention were pretty decent until they became "famous".

True. Clattenburg was capable of actually being very good at times. I remember the first time he reffed one of our matches, I actually took note of him as one who might go on to the top. Only time I can remember actually being impressed with a newer ref.

    Great ref.

Also I like that you spelled his name incorrectly even though his name is at the top of the youtube video that you shared :D

Was probably the best at keeping a game under control. He never really got phased. That said he's become some mythical figure when in reality he made plenty of poor decisions. He was good, but he's overrated.

Card happy and a bit overrated due to him looking different/shouting at players.

I wanted to be like Collina one time so I shaved my head and eyebrows during the 2002 world cup. I was only 12 and I have, to this day, no idea what the feck was going through my head! :houllier:

My mum thought I needed professional help after I explained why I took a razor and shaved my eyebrows and hair off. She went fecking mental!

That's highly debatable to say the least - I don't agree at all. He was very often in the spotlight, often for going out of his role and being as aggressive as the players. OK, his looks (shaven head, mad eyes) did its trick, but he did verbally abuse the players more often than other referees do. I would love for referees to stand up more often aggressively, actively warning players that one more word and you're out-kind of thing. Collina was a legend, but who knows how the perception was like if he looked more like a normal ref? Appearance mattered a whole lot with this one.

A red card every three games and an average of four yellow per game.

    I'd say card happy.

He controlled the player's without being a cnut. Commanded respect but didn't make it about him, understood that playing advantage was important at key times. Overall went unnoticed and wasn't a talking point after the 90 minutes. This is nearly the opposite to the shit show we see weekly in the premier league.

Best memory of Collina was when he took charge of the England v Argentina game that we won 1-0 with the Beckham penalty. We were unbelievably good at times in that game (Sheringham especially) but quite early on it became clear that the ref wasn't going to put up with any play acting from the South Americans. Memory is hazy but I think despite making very fair decisions, most of them went our way. Toward the end of the game it felt (through an admittedly drunken haze) like he was completely on our side and almost wanted England to win. By the 80th minute or so the whole pub I was in was singing "Collina, Collina" at the big screen. He was a hero after that game.

I don't really remember much about games he reffed. I'm sure he was good but I thought he was so high profile because of the way he looked.

I mean, if he looked like any of the little fatties reffing the PL these days, nobody would have noticed him.

Obviously we know the reason he's bald is because he was using brylcream as a kid but please enlighten us on his cheating.
