If hypothetically all the squad was to be sold... what level of clubs would our players end up at?

A sort of roundabout way of assessing the actual quality of the squad outside of discussions on Jose and his tactics - Without treading on the general discussion of are our players good enough. I've seen Lingard get called a championship player but is that being too harsh? or would he genuinely struggle to start say for a Crystal palace over Zaha and Townsend... what is his true starter/squad level and would someone like Herrera - really get into the Barcelona first XI as transfer rumours suggested in the summer.

To summarise, how many of our players would actually be sought after by other big clubs and would be snapped up by rivals asap and which players would drop down the table dramatically, only attracting lower tier clubs and therefore have no real right to play here - even as squaddies.

To make it more systematic.. if you could try and use the following levels (rough guides) and discuss how the players would fare short term and long term, and their starting level and squad level i.e. you might argue Martial is starter level at team like Dortmund right now but in terms of squad level he'd still attract interest from a Chelsea now, and be a possible starter for a PSG level club in the future etc.

    Tier 1 Club - Real/Barca/Bayern/PSG
    Tier 2 Club - City/Juventus/Chelsea/Atletico
    Tier 3 Club - Liverpool/Dortmund/Arsenal/Spurs
    Tier 4 Club - Monaco/Napoli
Tier 5 Club - Europa league (5-8 in domestic league/champion of really weak domestic league)
Tier 6 Club - Midtable (Leicester, Southampton etc)
Tier 7 Club - Relegation level (Crystal palace etc)
Tier 8 Club - Championship and below

De Gea- Tier 1 (He can easily start for any club in the world)

    Chris Smalling- Tier 3

Now we are getting to the bones of it aren't we. You can argue about a Tier here or there but basically it's hard to disagree with the overall reality which is that we are probably OVERACHIEVING given the players we have available

It's shocking that the Squad has ended up in this state tbh

How the hell is Andreas Pereira ending up at a club like Arsenal or Spurs? He'd be fifth or sixth choice at Utd.

Haven't compared it to other squads yet, so can't comment. All I will say is that lack of investment can't be the issue, for me it is down to lazy scouting and poor decision making for the squad to be bloated but with very few tier 1/2 level players (contrast that with say the 1999 squad or 2008).

How is Ajax in the same tier as Napoli and Monaco?!

They would battle for relegation in the PL. That final last year was a fluke.

It's both imo - see my thread on our spending compared to City and Chelsea's as a percentage since 2004. They have consistently outspent us year on year for a long time now.

But yes that still doesn't excuse some of our signings and when David Moyes is shocked at how poor our Scouting system was I think that tells you all you need to know!

Might also depend what roles they get. I don't think many top teams want Fellaini, but if Mourinho goes to PSG he might bring Fellaini with him.

De Gea I think could still end up at Real Madrid. PSG can easily buy Pogba as well so that is why I have them in T1.

De Gea - T1 Would definitely end up at Real Madrid.
Romero - T3 Would make a good back-up at a tier 1/2 team, but as a starter he could probably get a tier 3 team since two of those have worse keepers than him right now.

    DEFENDERS

Victor Lindelof T3/4 Hard to judge when he's played so few games, and been so poor in those that he has played.
Eric Bailly - T3 Still a bit rash to be a starter at a top team.
Phil Jones - T6 Great player when fit aside from the occasional poor game, but a top club wouldn't gamble on his fitness.
Marcos Rojo - T4 Good player, but likes an injury almost as much as Jones.
Chris Smalling - T3 Arsene loves him.
Daley Blind - T4 I don't think he'd lack for offers, only thing lacking from his games is physicality.
Luke Shaw - T6 Really needs guaranteed playing time to rebuild his career after so long injured/on the fringes.
Antonio Valencia - T5 Only age stops him going to a higher tier.
Matteo Darmian - T5 Seems to be highly regarded in Italy still so could probably get a EL level team there.
Axel Tuanzebe - T8 Teams in relegation battles tend to look to more experienced players so Axel would probably end up at a Championship team, at least in the short term.
Ashley Young - T6 Has had a decent run this season/end of last season which could interest some mid table teams as opposed to relegation battlers which I would have guessed at twelve months ago.

    MIDFIELDERS

Andreas Pereira - T4 Think Valencia would sign him permanently.
Paul Pogba - T1 Would start for most teams in the world.
Jesse Lingard - T6 Plenty of mid table teams would take a gamble on him. He's nowhere near as bad as some on the caf would have you believe.
Michael Carrick - T6 If he doesn't retire he'd have plenty of suitors.
Ander Herrera - T5 Nowhere near good enough to start for a top team. Decent squad player for T3/4
Fellaini - T5 Seems to be interest from Turkey.
Nemanja Matic - T1 PSG are still looking for a replacement for Motta aren't they? Wouldn't be about as good a choice for that as is available.
    Scott McTominay - T8 Championship.
Angel Gomes - T3 I think there would be lots of interest but he wouldn't get consistent game time at the top clubs so maybe he'd take a look at Sancho's situation and end up at a club like Dortmund.

    ATTACKERS

Juan Mata - T4 Good enough to be a squad player at a good team.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan - T5 Underwhelming, but his past performances for Shakhtar and Dortmund would mean he'd have plenty of offers.
    Romelu Lukaku - T3 T1/2 teams don't need a first choice striker.
Zlatan - T5 Won't be backup, won't move to a team that will battle for 4th. A champion from a weaker league.
Martial - T1 Everybody would want him.
Rashford - T2/3 Same as Martial but I don't think he'd leave England. Maybe Spurs?
    D. Mitchell - T8 Isn't he a LB? Looked good against Palace but that's not enough to judge a player.
J.Wilson - T8 Career has never really got going. Needs to leave for first team football.

Be interesting to throw this question up against the '99 or '08 squads. just to show some the huge gap in quality expecting Jose to work miracles

    GOALKEEPERS

    De Gea - T1 - World Class
    Romero - T3 - Excellent #2

    DEFENDERS

Victor Lindelof - T8 - Early days but have to say on current evidence has shown nothing at all
Eric Bailly - T1 - Absolute diamond unearthed by Jose, beast of a defender.
Phil Jones - T1 - Underrated. I don't buy this 'there aren't many good CBs argument. Phil Jones when fit could play for any side in the world
Marcos Rojo - T2 - On last year's performance could arguably be higher but on balance it's too early for that
Chris Smalling - T3 - Terrible on the ball and has a tendency to get flustered but really good natural defender and physical specimen
Daley Blind - T4 - Technically easy on the eye but lacks pace and power to be a real top player
Luke Shaw - T5 - On latest evidence needs to really start stepping up or risk being one of those 'what could have been' players
Antonio Valencia - T4 - Ridiculous footballer. Beast of a defender but so one-dimensional in possession it's almost bizarre
Matteo Darmian - T4 - The definition of a Europa League standard player. No major weaknesses but no major strengths either
Ashley Young - T6 - Tries hard and has been a great servant but very average

    MIDFIELDERS

Andreas Pereira - T5 - Yet to see sustained evidence that he can be a top player
Paul Pogba - T1 - Our one true world class outfield player imo
Jesse Lingard - T6 - Has his uses and good ambassador for the club but very average
Michael Carrick - T6 - Legs have gone but retains some of former qualities
Ander Herrera - T5 - Very limited player imo, no real standout attributes
Fellaini - T4 - Awkward character who might shine in a team which play to his strengths
Nemanja Matic - T2 - Consistently delivers quality performance

    ATTACKERS

Juan Mata - T5 - Aesthetically pleasing but so physically limited and first thought is always to go backwards or sideways
Henrikh Mkhitaryan - T4 - High risk high reward player who can't deliver consistently enough to be ranked any higher
Romelu Lukaku - T2 - Beast of a striker and proven goalscorer but needs to develop all-round game to be judged truly world class
Zlatan - T3 - Legend of the game but powers where on the wane even before his injury
Martial - T2 - Unbelievably talented but too inconsistent to be ranked any higher
Rashford - T4 - Raw potential is there but doesn't have the technique of Anthony Martial

Don't really see the point in this nonsense. More so the tier system being used is not very consistent which leads people to put Rojo as a T4 level defender and Romero a T5 keeper when Liverpool are a supposed T3 team. Bizarre.

Don't agree with the timing of the thread. If this was made before the Liverpool game, we'd hardly see as many low tiers as we are.

Mentioned something similar to this in another thread, its a good way of showing everyone just where a club is at. With that in mind i'll keep it short.

De Gea, Bailley, Matic, Pogba, Lukaku, Ibra, Martial and Rashford: 1 or 2

The rest of them (apart from a couple of new youngsters) are all vanilla players either past it or just plain average so they are all 5 or 6.

    Were not good enough basically.

    Edited. Fair criticism. @donkeyfish

Well its a timeless thread, can easily come back to it at end of season and expose people's views for underrating some of our players. As for the Rojo and Romero stuff, that is the point of this thread to try and correct some opinions on how supposedly 'poor' our players are and if some fans opinions are too harsh.

For me Rojo and Romero are national team starters for Argentina and two of our better players, so to argue they wouldn't be starting for Dortmund/Liverpool in defensive positions, is a stretch IMO.

There's only so many times we can ask the same questions though. How good is the squad, is Pep better, what tier players do we have, is the squad good enough..

    It's boring

Maybe. But the current state of the forum is going to lead to some questionable decisions. For instance, there a post that has rated Mata and Mkhi in T6 which is ridiculous.

As an aside, which tier would our current squad fit into? Feels like we started the season as a 2, but now I'm thinking 3 :(

I think people are seeing things from rose coloured glasses and rate our players too highly. Realistically most of our players would fetch low prices on the secondary market. I doubt other teams would pay top dollar for most of our players. If our players are as good as people think then why do we have to park the bus against other top 6 sides? If we had all these top players we would have been contending over the last four years. I don't think our lack of performances is solely due to our managers. LVG and Jose are top managers yet they couldn't get better performances from these supposedly top players.

Some of these tiers are weird. Arsenal in a tier higher than Napoli for example.

I think anywhere between Tier 1 - 4, depending on how the player is going to be used i.e. starting XI or squad player.

Absolutely! if the players were so good, why would we have to park the bus indeed. It's like if Alonso, Ramos, Ronaldo, Marcelo, Di Maria, Özil and Benzema were any good, why would Mourinho have to park the bus. Or maybe the last year's champions, if they were any good, why would he have to park the bus. Your logic could not be more sound.

The state of the thread. Sitting in second in the league and comfortably through to the knockout stages. Best defence in the league and people are putting our defenders at midtable and below? Have a word with yourselves.

    De Gea - Madrid/Barca/PSG
    Romero - Monaco/Napoli/Lazio/Boca Juniors/etc

Valencia - He’ll retire at United
Darmian - Any Serie A side
    Rojo - Atletico/Valencia
    Bailly - PSG/Barca/Atletico
    Smalling - West Ham/Stoke/West Brom
    Jones - Everton/Leicester/Stoke
    Shaw - Spurs/Southampton/West Ham
Blind - I could see Barca fancying him
    Young - Watford/Stoke

Carrick - He’ll retire at United
    Matic - Juventus/Dortmund/Most PL sides
    Fellaini - Juve/Roma/Milan/Most midtable sides
    Herrera - Barca/Atletico/Valencia
    Mata - Barca/Juventus/Inter/Chelsea
    Pogba - Madrid/Barca/PSG

    Lingard - Watford
    Rashford - Man City/Madrid
    Martial - Arsenal/Monaco
    Zlatan - Napoli/Milan/MLS/Germany
    Lukaku - PSG/Chelsea/Juventus
    Mkhitaryan - Dortmund/Arsenal

So basically nearly everyone would be taking a step down by leaving United. Except De Gea and Pogba. I think they would walk into any top sides starting 11 for definite.
