Taking it from the Smalling thread. When do we get to the point that we finally abandon this Jones and Smalling experiment? They clearly don't work together and never have.

Playing together doesn't preclude them from getting their feet mixed up when making routine clearances though.

Far too much of the nervous Nellies about them. Can see why we strongly linked with another CB. These guys are excellent squad players.

Bailly was a much bigger problem than either of them.

Yeah agreed. Personally just never comfortable when they are paired together. Individually you can perhaps put up with one of them, but both together is just always a gamble IMO.

It's amazing how shite Smalling has become compared with last season as I never rated Jones.

I felt they were good until we had a back 6.

Jose fecked it up with his too many cooks formation.

One of them (probably Jones) should be scrapped this summer.

They are both equally clumsy and disasters waiting to happen. Let's end the debate once and for all who is the worst, and ship out te both of them at the first chance we get.

They're a pair of clowns. There's no composure between them and they always look awkward and clumsy.

Both these defenders need blind playing at CB & they literally will turn to WC over night

I fail to see why Jones is in for criticism based on today. Smelling played up to the goal but he was that bad for the goal he's always going to get criticised. The goal is down to Bailly doing his best not to head the ball and Smalling's refusal to use his left foot. Any panic was caused by having too many centre backs on the pitch.

They're just not good enough. But then Bailley hasn't exactly performed well in recent times either. Rojo's been playing well but will he keep it up? Last season was pretty rough for him. Mourinho will be looking for a new starting CB during the summer, no doubt about it.

Day by day, Rojo has been standing out as our best CB.

Think playing a proper settled back four will do them wonders. Both players always need a run of several matches to get their form and momentum going.

Playing wierd back 3/ back 6 formations is going to make everyone look silly.

Can't really put today or the past few games on either of them when we've played a back 3 and none of our centre backs have looked in anyway comfortable or even ok, I think that as pairings Smalling is good with Bailly and Jones is good with Rojo.

Jones always has a moment of wtf? in him. Every time he looks solid he does something daft like falling over in the box like in the first half.

Yeah, becoming more obvious by the game. The other 3 'should' be better, but have some glaring flaws. Rojo has been rather consistent as a CB. You know what you will get from him. I guess that's a residue of so much chopping & changing among the CB's - a bit of undecisiveness as the communication & trust just isn't there for all of them.

I don't really trust any of our central defenders to play intelligently. They could do a great job if they were paired with someone who has some footballing IQ. Bailly and Jones want to tackle everything that moves without thinking about the consequences, and Smalling is just hit and miss during some games.

I would bin off Smalling out of the 2. He makes every defender in our squad perform at levels below when paired with him; Bailly, Jones and Rojo have all had some of that Smalling terror flow through their veins and looked worse for it, Bailly has gone from worldclass to average in weeks because Jose has lumped Mike on him. He needs Blind to babysit him to look anything like a football player. I won't judge Jones based of his last few poor performances because they have all come with Smalling on the field, although a defender needs a brain to mark zonally and i think both of these 2 lack in that respect.

United has a history of playing 2 central defenders who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and take some of the pressure from the midfield by picking out passes from the back. I don't think we should move away from that to incoorperate these 2 into the starting 11 and playing Huthball every game.

They both lack technical composure that Rio and Vidic had, plus I never viewed Smalling as a confident or inspiring captain. I think they're both good for a club like Everton but not if you want to consistently fight for big trophies as they have a lot of brain farts between them (and I think Rojo can be a liability when he becomes hot headed in a game...when he's calm, he plays well).

He started off the season well, during which time he was our best defender. Then he got injured. Then went to AFCON and was never the same.
At this time, Rojo is by far our best defender. Smalling is fantastic in the air. Rojo works great, when paired with Rojo.
But Rojo + Smalling = dangerous pairing (for us).

He obviously slipped which can happen to anyone. He wasn't falling over just for the fun of it. Even Jones isn't that stupid

Slightly off track, but I see Jones has withdrawn from England squad with an unspecified injury.

Ignore Jones falling over, Bailly misheading it, or Smalling completely missing the ball letting their man score for a minute...

Smalling trying to head a ball that was ankle height was clearly the highlight..of sh!tness

So true. Reminds me of Johnny Evans, who would make one mistake per game in all the away games... A really huge blunder and I was like waiting for it to happen, so that I could relax and then concentrate on the rest of the match

You don't get Phil Jones fit enough for a run of games though. That's the big issue.

    His injury record is appalling.

I'd play Blind, Rojo + another CB when we are playing with a back 3. On current form, I don't even care who the third defender is as they all don't fill me with confidence.

But playing with a back 3 without at least one of your defenders being good on the ball and a particularly good passer does the a team a disservice (hence Blind). Rojo is easily our best CB on current form.

Bailly and Rojo, I could see playing for any of the top elite clubs. They're just more talented and anyone can surely see that.

Jones and Smalling? Never in a million years. They're clumsy, nervous and can't play out from the back like all the top CBs can. They even have difficulty clearing the ball with their feet sometimes, as we saw with Smalling on Sunday.

If they left United, they would end up somewhere like Stoke or Sunderland. Jonny Evans was better than the two of them and he could only get a move to West Brom.

I hope we break the bank for Pique in the summer. I hear Shakira wants to move to England so you would think we would be his favoured destination.

At the start of last season I thought Smalling was really stepping up to the mark but it only lasted about 5 months and he's back to being the reckless, error prone defender he always was.
Jones worked well with Rojo this season but has struggled since coming back from yet another lay off.
Bailly started off well, also, but his performances have tailed off a bit since the African Cup of Nations, for some reason.
Head and shoulders (literally) as our best central defender is Rojo.Who thought we would be saying that this time last season ?
Don't forget Daley Blind can be used as a centre back too.
I'd certainly let Smalling leave, probably Jones too.A new centre back is a must in the next transfer window.

Might be harsh but I would happily bin Smalling out of all our centre backs.
