    Very interesting comments.

I think this is a real test now for Smalling and Jones. Jose clearly thinks they can be back before the end of the season, if they are and they play well they may do enough to save their Utd careers.

If both don't play again this season I think both will be gone in the Summer.

It's unfair of me to judge either of them, but they do seem to be softly injured so often.

John Terry is pretty much a standard bearer for "Fit enough". He may have been 70% fit, routinely, but his attitude and desire to always on the pitch plugged a fcukload of percentage points and saw him take to the field. Rio and Vidic seemed to do the same.

Players should of course protect themselves. Careers are short and they're a long time retired. But at the sharp end of the season I expect footballers to be saying to a team doctor "It hurts too much to play, so stop it hurting and get me on the pitch"

We need one of the chuckle brothers back. One is definitely gone in the summer, let's see who wants it more. Fight through the pain.

May as well get them playing quick, then sell them in Summer.

Now with a month of the season left they should be willing to take risks.

Smalling apparently has the brace off.

If all these Mourinho quotes are real and in context, they read as if we have players just drawing a huge paycheck without really caring. Either way, it's a big worry.

Please feel free to convieniently break your toe. Pretty difficult to do and there's far less painful ways to avoid work.

He just wants them to push even harder to try and return earlier if possible.

But of course people with agendas will twist this into them being cowards even though both have played through injuries before.

Also, people really really need to look at actual stats before calling Smalling injury prone. He's played 80% of all our league games over the last 2 seasons and 75% over the last 3. This season has been frustrating but it's a more a case of bad luck and not the recent norm.

Jones should have gotten his MD by now, while Smalling is a disaster waiting to happen. Both players should be sold to bring in one elite defender (that is not injury prone) and an homegrown defender like Keane to maintain the homegrown quota.

There needs to be adequate depth on the backline to accommodate suspensions and injuries. A squad should have at least 4 true CBs and another 2-3 players (usually RB, LB and DM) that can play the role in emergency.

Which is quite correct . Its not the first time he has said it about Smalling either. Both need to be shown the door in July

He posted a short video a couple of days ago saying he was out of the brace, and running in a pool (to reduce his weight).

Hope these two can grow a pair of bullucks between them and get back playing again. Jones needs to be sold in the summer

As he should. Those two vaginas need to play through pain. 3 years on the trot they have let us down by missing key chunks of the season.

It's pretty much been 6 years of this from Jones.

Savage and rightfully so. Jones is such a crock it's unreal. Smalling is running already anyway. Throw him in.

Mourinho must be really annoyed with both of them for him to come out with those sorts of comments.

Jones is the obvious crock but Mourinho has hinted earlier in the season that Smalling is mentally weak.

If they are simply ruling themselves out at this point then it's inexcusable. I'd get rid of both in Summer regardless, but would be nice if they can help us out until then as we need the numbers.

3?! They've been routinely injured, Jones especially, since Fergie brought them in. Smalling seemed to have turned a corner the past two seasons, but he's reverted to the mean again this season.

Smalling has had a disappointing season but I am willing to give him another year due to his excellent 15/16. He also has a much better fitness record than Jones.

I can't think of a single reason why Jones should be with us next year.

Imagine if you missed work 30-50% of the time every year. You'd get fired from your job.

These two have been sick notes for too long now. Time to prove your worth and put your body on the line.

Harsh on Smalling, who has mostly stayed fit the last few years.

Think one of the two will be kept on for another season due to Rojo's injury - probably Jones.

Wouldn't be upset to see both of them leave though, provided we bring in reinforcements.

I agree but based on performances when fit, I think Jose trusts him more than Smalling.

What a load of rubbish. Smalling played 35 league games last season.

If they're injured then they're injured. And when they're fit, Mourinho will look to play them. The reason they're not playing is because they're not yet fit.

Homegrown status will save one of them, possibly both.

Jose will have a centreback partnership in place for the start of the season that won't include them though.

Normally I'd be against rushing anyone back or pressuring someone into playing too soon but we're so close to the end of the season...play through the pain for a couple of games then you've got the summer to recover.

Why? This is the third time Smalling has been injured this season. With the previous two, both times he came back and then as soon as a spot opened up (either because one of the current two got injured or went out of form) Smalling was put straight back into the team and didn't drop out until he got injured again. Whereas Jones only had one run of games all season, and that was when he and Rojo were the only two fit.

I seem to recall this is how Owen Hargreaves ruined his career.
