haha, So it's not like Mourinho went for Matic as most of the media has speculated but rather that it seems Chelsea might not have wanted him.

I must admit when I heard that we were signing him, and Chelsea were letting us, I assumed that he had some kind of problem. A Schweinsteiger moment as it were.

Maybe Mourinho would have gone for Matic if he thought he was available :smirk:

I’m thankful that it’s Matic in our midfield and not that block headed cnut Eric Dier.

That's the impression I got. That he wasn't interested in obtaining him initially as he thought there was no chance he would be available. The minute he was informed that Matic was available, we moved fast and signed up.

And thank goodness we did, what a brilliant player he has been for us so far

Or Chelsea wanted to get rid as they were after Bakayoko?

I wasnt for or against the signing of Matic. Must admit he didnt excite me but I knew he would be useful for JM's style of play

But I was very surprised Chelsea sold him to a rival. I would have been furious if I was a chelsea fan

I work with a Chelsea fan who is adamant that Matic's form has surprised him and that he was no great shakes for the last couple of years. Most of his mates who support Chelsea thought it was a good deal to get 40 mil for him and bring in Bakayoko so they don't necessarily subscribe to Neville's thinking that whoever sanctioned it should be fired.

I never think that way. I dont like to try and help a rival at all by selling them a player

Yeah, ideally you don't want to see Rashford going to City or De Gea to Liverpool but at the same time for certain players you wouldn't begrudge them a move. Welbeck to Arsenal was never going to incite riots.

I think the plan was to have Matic as an option but not really expect Chelsea to give us a sniff. Man Utd fan Dier seemed to be his first choice.

"He'll be one of three former blues to make the trip alongside the manager and Juan Mata" - Lukaku isn't going?

I was always sceptical about the rumours of Matic being surplus to requirements at Chelsea. They were countered by a more believable narrative that Chelsea did want to keep him but were open to offers, seemingly because of the player's own circumstances.

Sure I understand that. Much like talk of the summer was that Costa wanted to leave. Because Conte didn't want him.

I can believe the same of Matic.

I also know Conte complained and said he didn't know who made the deal go through for Matic to United, but I also didn't ever read that he wanted Matic to stay at Chelsea. I believe he would have been happier to let Matic leave to Italy or Spain or something. i.e. He was happy to let Matic leave. Just wasn't happy that it was to United.

Also, Matic didn't go all Costa on Conte and quietly and quickly just made the deal happen instead. My own personal opinion of course.

Three former Blues alongside the manager - Mata, Lukaku and Matic alongside Mourinho.

    Terrible writing though.

Really bad. I don't think anyone would have that interpretation only based on what was written.

The talk was always that he was going to Juve as they were the side that was willing to spend up to 40 million for him ....next thing you know we are signing him. Turned out to be great business he's made us a better team and at the same time made a direct rival weaker. People can say what they want about him not having that great of a season last year but he was a first team player in a PL title winning side so his form wasn't as bad as Chelsea fans would like you do believe (obviously their trying to justify the transfer to us by saying his form was poor).

Can't help thinking he would have been a great signing for Liverpool, fortunately wasn't though.

So who was the third player.
We know...or do we? That Perisic was the fourth player.
Players were decided way before the end of the season and if Matic was not in Mo's plans, then who was?

Welcome to wonderful World of Telegraph sport. Used to be one of the best papers for sport out there, for the last few years it's been getting worse and worse, like all sports writing. It's particularly galling in The Telegraph's case, as it used to be so good.

He's been one of those that has experience and just clicks off the bat, instantly improving the side. Established players are really good for us at the moment, as we have plenty of potential in younger players. I think this one helped because there was no hype as well.
Seems like the kind of character that's spot on for United too.

Didn't Matic also ask to leave in the summer of 2016, but Chelsea refused? He eventually got his move this summer. Matt Law of the Telegraph (who is ITK with Chelsea news) certainly seems to think that Matic asked to leave this summer and didn't want to take part in their pre-season training.

Well yeah I’m sure it did shock him  but you can only guess it happened because Matic forced it through, seeing as Conte was clearly pissed off.

I think Conte didn't prefer Matic, even last season when they were immense, it looked like Matic was their weak link and there were speculations that Conte wanted to improve that area. Conte prefers box to box robust midfielders, that's why they chased Nainggolan desperately and had to settle with Bakayoko. See Fabregas is also constantly on thin ice in this Chelsea squad, Conte prefers his runners I think instead of deep lying players or slow holding mids like Matic.
