    In terms of first XI:

    * Reina over Friedel (although Friedel has been solid for us so far).

    * Agger shades it over Kaboul, but the latter has improved hugely since returning from Pompey and is now our first choice partner for King. Give it another 12 months and I reckon Kaboul will start to be far more widely rated as a really good CB.

    * Assou-Ekotto and Enrique are about equal for me: the former tends to be under-rated on here, but is an ever-present for Spurs and both Harry and most Spurs fans like him a lot.

    * Suarez over Defoe (if we're talking a 4-4-2, but otherwise it would likely mean dropping VdV, which is a tough call).

    That's it.

In terms of the wider squad, there are several more Liverpool players I'd swap for their Spurs equivalent.

Talking about Liverpool more generally, the most striking fact for me is that Liverpool spent far more this summer (gross, not net) than the entire cost of Spurs best XI.

I'd even choose De Gea and Joe Hart over Reina. The Liverpool GK has a few spaz moments every season it seems so you're always guaranteed to drop a few points every year with him between the sticks.

Thinking about it, only Suarez and maybe Lucas would make my Muppet Team.

The rest of the Liverpool squad = poo poos.

Oh and I agree Glaston, Essou Ekotto is a fine left back. I've always thought it.

I wonder what Spurs are going to do at the end of the season about Adabayor. To me his presence alone makes them such a more formidable outfit, and they surely can't match his wages.

Well, he'll either have to accept a massive wage cut of around 50% or go elsewhere, probably the latter.

However, no one else is going to pay him what City do and if we can offer him CL football, plus the usual CL bonus-wage payments, plus a regular starting slot at a club where he appears to be happy, then there's an outside chance he might just go for that rather than returning, unwanted and languishing on the bench (at best) at City.

Overall no. The Adam comment has to be qualified. I expected him to be a new Danny Murphy and a definite squad player. I still think he is but has has been showing signs lately that he could be more than that.

Overall, I think it is a result of Suarez being the only genuine top quality player in the final third. And he hasn't been scoring. We play good attacking football, we create chances. We have a solid defence and look coherent as a team.

For me, that boils it down to the fact that the chances we produce aren't clearcut enough often enough and the clearcut chances aren't being converted. Some of that is confidence, it's definitely weighing on us atm, some of it is down to the quality of the players producing and converting those chances.

The defence is looking good. Higher up the pitch Lucas, Gerrard and Suarez are nailed on as good enough. For the other three positions (basically 4 with Gerrard being so much), we have a a good array of squad quality players but no one standing out as genuine first team material for a top team. You can live with a few of those in the lineup, but 4 is just too many.

That's the key thing for me with Spurs at the moment, they all look very HAPPY.

No amount of money can buy team spirit - it's why United have done so well over the last few decades.

No better side to watch in the league at the moment either. Although United are yet to hit the higher gears and we're still winning games 5-0 which is ominous for everyone else.

    I love this league.

He's such a horrible, no necked cnut though isn't he? I couldn't bear him playing for my team.

I have no idea. We could probably stretch to 100k a week for him with good bonuses but above that, we won't be able to keep him. Which is a huge shame because you're spot on with his mere presence in the team.

I almost had a heart attack when he pulled up clutching his hamstring yesterday. We need some kind of physical presence up front, for if he gets injured during the season and for the game at Eastlands. I can't stand the thought of Pav or Defoe upfront with VDV behind them again.

Liverpool fans are the only people who talk about net spend. I've never seen or heard any other fans even mention it.

So basically B19 has worked out that if Liverpool scored more goals they'd be doing better.

That table shows that finishing is a huge problem for you, but it doesn't actually tell you whether that's your biggest problem or even of your biggest problems (just saying you can't make that statement based on that table) - it doesn't address things like whether you've actually spent wisely and built a team/squad capable of finishing top four.

He spent 18 mill on Aquilani! "But he sold Alonso for 30 which means his net spend was -12"

Liverpool's players don't lack ability, they've just got mental block, bless them.

New signings aren't needed, a psychologist is, then those Charlie Adam pot shots from 30 yards will start flying in.

Plenty of people talk about it, including me.

Why? Because net spend is a much more important measure than just outward spend. It speaks to the overall transfer policy and the financial health of a club.

This doesn't change the view of most people, including me, that Liverpool spent the money gained (from selling Torres, Alonso etc) very badly.

It was the same under Hodgson, as I recall. Lots of missed chances.

They are just not finishers. Meireles was the only reason for the burst of form last year. Now he's gone.

Exactly, it proves they've got shite strikers....even their best, Suarez, has always had a shit goals to chances ratio.

Nothing new. Basically they need to spend a few million on a couple of new forwards.

In terms of money spent vs performance he's one of the worst the Premier League has ever seen

It's a childrens historical novel from 1982, mate. Not sure whether the Dalglish likeness is deliberate or otherwise.

Those numbers tell us nothing whatsoever.

There's a difference between a Charlie Adam hopeful punt from 30 yards and a finish from 2 yards out for Javier Hernandez.

Is there any chance that City can end Adebayor's loan in January? Most season long loans allow the parent club to do this.

I know bringing back an unhappy player mightn't add much to their squad but with their financial strength it doesn't make much sense to have one of their players strengthening Spurs so much.

If anyone other than Dalglish spent the money he's spent on the pure dirt he's spent it on, and had the club sitting in the position and state they are currently in, making them look foolish to the wider public and being smalltime enough to wear that stupid t-shirt he had on, would they still be there?

I think he gets extra grace because of who he is. He's a dirt manager, and can no longer cut it in the premier league.
