Michael Owen ended up becoming a Ballon d'Or winner 3 years later, and was a world-class striker in my opinion. Injuries robbed him of his potential and even after that and in Madrid he was a very effective striker (I believe he had the best goals/min ratio among Raul and Ronaldo). That's not to say Owen would have been a Messi-like player, but just that Owen didn't regress without reason or because of the hype (although it was massive after the Argentina game)

Fair enough, waiting for a second season is a good approach for all parties involved in my opinion. In a world-cup year, Mbappe is not moving to any clubs that will not make him an automatic starter, and I don't see Real Madrid do that with BBC. I think Mou might be inclined to offer that, along with a world-record fee from a lot of add-ons which might be the only way to get him this summer. Otherwise, this has a James Rodriguez feel to it where he will go to Madrid right after a solid world-cup showing next year. I'm just sold on the guy already so I'd hate to see him end up in Madrid where the rich get richer, but maybe that's inevitable. I think with him and Rashford, United have two of the next great strikers for many years to come.

If we had a great team like Madrid have or like we had under fergie and only needed 1 maybe 2 additions max. I would sign mbappe. He would be able to slot around into a great team and the pressure wouldn't be as intense. The way we are now tho the pressure would be massive as we are on slippery slope trying to get back to the top. Could mpabbe handle that? Pogbas got a fair amount of stick this year rightly or wrongly for bieng the worlds most expensive player pogba can get a way with it a bit more for bieng a midfielder. As mbappe is a striker can you imagine if he went through a barren spell in front of goal he would get an ultimate amount of shit.

Raoul, I've got to say that this thread is going to be a thread people look back on and go "can you believe that Raoul didn't want to pay up the money and sign him, it was obvious he was going to be this good."

We are not squad wise at a place where we can spill 50% of our transfer budget on an 18 year old with one season under his belt.

These type of signings are the cherry on top to an already brilliant and competitive squad, we're not there at all.

Nonsense. We could spill €100m on him and still spend €200m bringing another 4 players in and have a squad to challenge on all fronts. That's the sort of money we are looking at this summer.

Hardly think we'll spend 300m Euros, and certainly not 1\3 of that on an 18 year old with one season under his belt.

Spend 75m Euros and you'll get Dortmund willing to do business for the ready made option in Aubemeyang. He won't be whoring himself to Madrid like Mbappe would either since he has basically been trying that for the last 3 years, with no bite from Madrid.

I'm more than happy to pay up when circumstances warrant. What people don't realize is they are being irrational about Mbappe. They are getting caught up in a wave of emotional exuberance that is coloring their rational thought process. He's a fantastic young player, but we don't know how he will fare next year or if he will successfully adapt to a league that is more competitive, physical, and cut throat than his own. Let's wait and see if he can replicate his good form next year. If that means he goes elsewhere then so be it. I am 100% sure he will not be a Ronaldo/Messi type player. If I thought he was, then i would pay 200m for him now.

Fair enough, we've seen different things when watching him. I've been wrong plenty of times before (said Obertan would be a starter for us) so it would be more down to luck than judgement but I really do think there's something special about him. I don't see anyone being the new Ronaldo or Messi any time soon and I don't necessarily think we will all be able to call it outright at 18 if they are but I do think he's going to be a phenomenon. Whether that's just being a 20-25 goals a season striker for the next 6-7 years (a perfectly respectable achievement pre-Ronaldo Messi era) or whether he will step up and hit the 40s and above is anyone's guess.

For me though, it's a similar situation to playing Texas hold'em. If you get pocket aces, you go all in. More cautious people might point out how easy it is for someone else to hit any low three of a kind, straight, flush or full house but you just have to trust what's in your hand. Statistically speaking, before anything else is drawn, pocket aces is the best hand you can have and therefore you have the best chance of winning.

Mbappe is pocket aces, you don't know how it will work out, you don't know if it's definitely going to pay off if you chuck all the money down, you just know that he's the best youngest out there and statistically speaking that should work our best for you.

I just think it's crazy to dismiss Mbappé as someone who could never emulate Cristiano when he's much better and complete than he was at his age.

Now that Messi and Cristiano have set a new standard, I don't believe it'll take decades for someone to achieve similar output. I'm not saying Mbappé will for certain be capable of it, but I'm not ruling it out. In many sports, once an outlier come around and sets a whole new standard of greatness, the rest follows along and records keep getting broken. I'm confident there is a player already out there who will at least match if not surpass the output of both Messi and Cristiano.

Being better at a young age has zero bearing on what may or may not transpire over the next 15 years. So what is actually crazy is attempting to compare a promising youngster with one year experience with one of the greatest players to ever play the sport.

He is the most exciting young talent we have seen in a very long time. If he is legitimately on the market it would be silly to not even make an attempt. Price and fit be damned.

He will move for big money, but not world-record money. He does not have enough of a media presence yet to warrant that type of money yet.

He has more hype, some of it justified, than any other player in the world right now, so with all the big clubs circling, I can easily see the transfer record being broken.

Takes a bit more than that. They sell the package. Ronaldo, Bale, Neymar, Suarez and Pogba. Took them a little while to reach those price brackets. Methinks it's also an issue with image rights.
He doesn't have that sort of presence yet in terms of ad revenue and generation.

Unlike all the players you listed, Mbappe would likely be the first player who would, for a lack of a better term, be auctioned off to the highest bidder. So with Madrid, United, City, and a few others in the mix - all big clubs with massive fee potential - he will likely go for over £100m

Personally, I just don't see it. It seems like more journo talk than anything to me. They also put out inflated numbers, even when they get it right with regards to the destination. I don't think it'll be much higher than 60-70 tops (pounds) as a one-time fee. That's Suarez money. Realistically, we're the only ones alongside Real to offer that.

How many star black players played for Real in the last 10 years?

None of these guys would make this Madrid team.

Madrid have shunned strikers like Higuain, Aguero and Falcao for Benzema.

    I think they'll sign Mbappe post-Ronaldo.

Doesn't make a difference. They weren't forced to get him.

If they were as you say, they wouldn't have gone for him, to start with. There were many non-black midfielders available to choose from !

My point is, Real won't sign Mbappe. And they did not sign Auba, even though he is way better than Benzema.

Adebayor...Played for one season, 14 La Liga games.

In the US he would be considered black.

Or because they don't want to replace Benzema at all.

Many top strikers were available these years and they decided to stick with Karim.

Aubameyang is a better goalscorer yes but for their system Benzema is perfect. Aubameyang would be too limited for them.

Well said. Like a hot equity, it's easy to get carried away with valuations based on potential future performances and relatively few past performances to judge.

I think he's great, but won't get carried away.

United, City, Madrid, Barca, PSG can all pay it. Don't forget City unsuccessfully offered 107m for Kaka around 2009. When all the big clubs want one player and the selling club knows it, the price will skyrocket very quickly.

The kid is going nowhere this Summer. Monaco don't need to sell him and won't sell all their players after they just reached CL semis with them. And the kid isn't after a move yet either. Come back to the thread next Summer.
