Great players shouldn't need protecting. It's a shame it's such a non contact game thesedays. I remember seeing clips of Bestie being hacked down by Chopper Harris(?) only to regain his balance and slide the ball in the net.

How? It doesn't matter how shite your manager is, you can still win the World Cup if you have a phenomenon in your team?

I think it's unfair that Argentina get two of these! Share them out footballing Gods!!!

hard to compare with maradona given messi's relatively modest experience in international football. will be interesting to see how he does at this year's World Cup. if he keeps up this form, we could be witnessing Maradona Mk. II...

you're right, but still the same, being selfish, I want to feast on his talent this summer rather than watch some big scary hairy defender hack and injure him after 2 games!

I don't think it'll ever get as bad as Pele 1966 or Maradona 82. Possibly the greatest Brazil side I've seen resorting to Millwall tactics against the munchkin. . .mental times.

Consistency's a good point, but Diego's top level was better.

    Still, BPITW.

Could be argued defences were a lot worse in the 80's

And back in Pele's days they were practically non existent

Holy Shit Balls ! I thought Messi was about 26. My God that's pretty incredible for being 22. He's a one in a million player. They don't come around all that often so you're spot on ! Enjoy the ride, the skills, the passes, the goals. He's immense

No, he played during a time when the Serie A was uber defensive catenaccio. And Arse's defence is a joke. . .not sure I've seen many worse. Burnley against City would give them a run for their money though.

And if you're going to, you'll have to argue they were a lot better in mid 90s Seria A when Fat Ronaldo played

Is it possible for Messi to have a good game without someone excitedly claiming he's the greatest player there's ever been ever...Can't we just appreciate him being the best in the business right now without having to get childishly over excited?....I know I'm wasting my fingers here really

I don't understand how you can be curmudgeonly when you've just watched a performance like that. You're a joyless soul Mockey, joyless I tell ye

I hope we land a young star or two from Argentina during the summer. There seems to be an abundance of lethal attackers emerging from there right now. Rooney will struggle to get his hands on the FIFA world player of the year in his lifetime with Messi around! Messi is frightening right now but Arsenal have a tendency to crumble against the top teams sometimes and I think Real Madrid will scrape a win against Barca over the weekend!

He's got 10 games (11 if they make the CL final) to get 11 goals to reach 50.

    No, he isn't!

Simone Inzaghi, RvN, Prso and Sheva all have as well.

Seven players have scored 4 goals in one European Cup/UEFA Champions League match:
Marco van Basten (Milan), Simone Inzaghi (Lazio), Dado Pršo (Monaco), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United), Andriy Shevchenko (Milan) Ferenc Puskas, (Madrid) and Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)[

It was a great performance clearly...superb in fact. Though I don't think anyone would ever claim Arsenal are one of the best defences in Europe...All I'm saying is it's a bit spastic to start throwing around GOAT tags...it's kids stuff. Lets wait till he's at least in his 30s before we start calling it....Fat Ronaldo was better at 22 for me and look what happened to him.. He's the best in the World right now by a fair margin, but almost everyone saying he's the GOAT has no frame of reference at all and are just being a bit over excited...IMO of course

I dont think we need to wait until he is 30. But yeah saying it right now is a little overboard.

Would 4 years taking in 2 world cups be fair? If he keeps up this same level, he will be best of all time

True, if he keeps going at this rate then 26/27 or so would be fair-ish.

The boy is clearly a fecking genius.

That said, this Arsenal side (not just the defence) was a pale imitation of what their real first team would be...

No Gallas, Song, Fabregas, Arshavin or van Persie.

I actually feel a bit for the Goons, because they've been outclassed with half a shadow team out there.

me too. I'm usually short on sympathy for the Gooners but this time I did feel bad. too many injuries to class players and then facing a superb team at the same time. tough titty.

Yeah, but even defensive barca's backups are miles ahead of arsenal's first choice defence.

As for Iniesta and Ibra, wenger was never going to succeed trying to outplay barcelona even if xavi was out tonight.
