By his standards he was playing womans football. Poorly. By normal standards he was really poor. Lots of misplaced passes, lost the ball and made a mess of two great chances and a penalty.

Awful performance and awful tie in general. Not the sort of performance you'd expect from a three Ballon d'Or winner.

Bad time for a form dip. Barca are simply too dependent on him for goals. That has put him under even more pressure to score when they go behind.

Usually he performs excellently in the big matches, but that's the second time he has performed poorly. Perhaps, the fatigue has taken it's toll on him.

More to do with Chelsea completely suffocating him, besides the penalty ofcourse.

I thought it was ridiculous to even think that Messi wouldn't win the Ballon D'or but after the week he's had, I wonder if that's enough to do it.

Bottled it when his team really needed him for that penalty.

That was a textbook bottle job, from the penalty miss to the constant giving the ball away.

He hit the cross bar with that penalty that was just pure unlucky & set up the two goals. I wouldn't call that bottling it.

    Only human.

But let's be honest here. He was due a bad performance in a big game. He's consistently been the matchwinner on these type of occasions. Rubbish tonight though.

He has just proved why he is still far from Maradona and Pele's league.

I thought Messi was superhuman consistent, but were Maradona and Pele THAT consistent then?

i didn't see pele, but maradona wasn't that consistent

he was missed in some very important games and, in fact, we qualified to the mexico world cup, despite of him doing feck all that game against peru

His poor performance is even more highlighted by his team mates not stepping up in his absence. It's only a few games over a whole season but boy did he pick his time to miss chances.

Barca have a cracking team but they really do rely on Messi for their end product.

They are missing Villa and an in form Pedro. Cuenca and Tello for all their talent couldn't fill that gap and Sanchez seams to be still not fully integrated into Barcas overall play.

That is a load of bullshit. Sorry to be so blunt there but such a simplistic and predictable comment. Guy has scored 63 goals in one fricken season. I think he has to walk on water before some people actually recognize what a fecking player he is.

What about the times Maradona went AWOL in the CL(or EC as it was known then)....oh yeah, isn't known to you so you ignore it.

The only thing keeping Messi from the GOAT list for some is simply because when he has a bad game it's KNOWN worldwide and repeated endlessly, Maradonas and Peles and even Zidanes were forgotten about ultra quickly.

I think the problem with this Barca is not Messi but Xavi and Iniesta, they are tired and they can't find holes for Messi like before. Then Chelsea was lucky 2 balls hiting the crossbar/post and the fact Barca doesn't adapt to the games, they needed a tall target in the box to cross and shoot from far since the other team parked an entire city in front the goal. I really don't think Chelsea winning is good for football, football is about entertainment or used to be and I'm not a fan of Barca style of play but Chelsea's style ......
