Hard to believe this still happens in 2017 tbh, but to be honest as someone that's visited Russia twice with work and worked with quite a few of them, their beliefs and culture are something akin to how England was in the 70s or so, even their hooliganism is very 70/80s. They'll need time to catch up to the majority of the western world.
If people think their racism is bad they wouldn't want to see or hear how they behave towards homosexuality.

Can't really blame them per say, it's ignorance passed down through generations, it'll take decades for it to die out much like it has in England, although there's still a lot of people here living in the past too as can be seen if Britain first ever has a march near you. Shames me to admit my grandparents hold very archaic views even now in their 80s, you can't really change what's ingrained into people from birth sadly, you can only hope empathy and education of the next generation stamps it out for good eventually.

Racist to pass comment on 6 people you know? Surely not. There's a big difference between "of the 6 Russians I know, all of them were racist and homophobic" and "every Russian is racist and homophobic. I know this based on the 6 guys I know."

so they complained when their player got racist abuse but when their player did it to fellow footballer, they instead gave support. haha
of course, I hope there wont be incident about racism again in football. #Equality

Whilst I totally agree, I think it's always wrong to push our values onto others, regardless of how correct we (think we) are. Our values are, after all, no more valid than any other values anyone has ever had in the history of humanity, and doubtless our values will be looked upon as disgusting in only a few short decades.

    It's a tricky old world.

We've now got a society in Western Europe where racism and homophobia are unacceptable and we hold footballers to that standard, but there are other countries where footballers have to fall in line with norms that they won't have lived with.

It's right for sport to take a stand and sad that it has to.

Racism is a social problem. Uefa handing out fines or bans doesn't accomplish much. More needs to be done in the way of raising awareness and education.

Wasn't sure where to put this but has anyone seen the racial abuse Emre for Fenerbache aimed at Didier Zokara?

Mods please feel free to move to an appropriate thread on racism.

It's an old incident from 2012. Emre was given a two-and-a-half-month suspended prison sentence by a Turkish court.

Not sure if serious but i'll try to give my 2c.

The more homogeneous a country or region is, the more "different" people look odd to the locals. While Russia, as part of the Soviet Union, did have many different ethnic groups and continue to have plenty, most live in their specific regions and don't really mingle with the rest much.

On top of that, extreme football fans or hooligans are more likely to stretch the otherwise harmless fascination with the different foreigners. Where I'm from older people still stare at foreigners, especially the ones who look different. They don't necessarily mean it in a bad way. It's a pity but there are those who because of many reasons act out their stupidity.

We're not very racist and we might be the whitest country on Earth. Russia is racist for other reasons than simply being white.

The World Cup is going to be a fecking horror show next year.

I’m guessing that most black fans won’t be travelling to Russia to support their teams in fear of getting their heads caved in.

FIFA’s decision making has proven that it is all about the money and they don’t give a feck about the fans.

Of course there are many reasons and my post was incredibly basic in nature. I'm not sure how many Icelandic hooligans there are as well, do you have any? Honest curiosity.

Its an easy answer, a large amoint of world is racist and homophobic.

The mistake we make is thinking the western world is “the world” when it comes to the majority view, when it far form the case.

Yes but can they be represnted by their government?

I mean.. like.. I mean.. What are you even trying to say here? We can’t push values of cultural inclusivity upon members of the global community? Like yes perhaps a lot of values that we hold will be deemed disgusting in a few decades - but I would hate to think that ‘dont be racist’ is one of them. I mean there are certain values that can be deemed as supremely more valid than those that came before us. Like don’t be racist.

I’m honestly so bemused as to what you mean.

I disagree. If your values include hate or discrimination towards another race, you should be re-educated and alternative values should be forced upon you.

There should absolutely be a zero tolerance policy towards all racism, and personal values should play no part in the discussion.

Suarez being racist and Liverpool acting inappropriately afterwards should have no bearing on this situation.

Neither Rhian nor any other Liverpool player should be subjected to racism, regardless of contentious circumstances in past years.

But it should though, the Suarez incident showed they supported racism, so to complain about it now is ironic and hypocritical.

But it shows that the club will support racism if their players do it, but not if they receive it, it's hugely hypocritical of them.

Nah, they'll only support their important players that does it, if someone not important to their first team done it, Liverpool would have thrown the player under the bus and start condemning them like everyone else.

Their club gives their star players too much leeway.

The state of the world ey. Violence as a proper response to words? Not sure who is more backwards, the racists or the ones thinking physical aggression is the way to fix it. Dear me...
