Better than letting him go on a free.

His low resale value and the fact he still has some chance of coming good makes this a sensible decision.

Is it the original +1 clause in his contract or a new extension on top of that?

Yeah its a little worrying (at least from his perspective) given his age that we're just extending the current option rather than negotiating a new deal.

The +1 clause. He'll be gone in the summer.

It'd be daft to negotiate a new deal with him considering he's been terrible.

We did the same with Evra.

He still left that same Summer.

No - gut feeling and logical conclusion. If we thought he had a decent future here, we'd have agreed a new contract rather than just activating the clause.

Well a player could be terrible but the manager still feel that he has a future at the club. Mourinho clearly has no faith in Shaw; whether its attitude, professionalism, fitness, I'm not sure but he's playing a 32 year old winger at left back (who came back from a similar injury at a similar time) at the moment and Shaw can't displace him.

Shaw and to a lesser extent Smalling remain the 2 players who were publicly lambasted who have not improved as a result. Jones, Mhki & Martial have all upped their game.

Agreeing a new contract with him barely even in the team is fiscally irresponsible though. I concur that his future here looks bleak but you might be looking too much into it. This is barely newsworthy.

He's been bad ever since the injury, even when he was fit.

Get a few extra million when he goes in the summer/January.

Could've been good but the broken leg fecked him. Oh well.

He is like Anderson who has all the talents in the world to be world class in his position. But somehow only able to perform in a short period of his entire time here for us. They were both hampered by injuries, lack of mental strength and discipline, fitness and weight problems.

Anderson is already a gone case. Hope Luke Shaw can turn his career around. But judging by his current condition I don't think he can make it here. Man Utd should move on as we have given Shaw enough of chances and left back is a very important position for us to upgrade.

Didn't we do the same with Fellaini ? Can you see him leaving in the summer ?

I see where you are coming from but i don't think anything is set in stone yet, yes he's on his last chance but he could still make it here if he pulls his finger out.

This just seems to be covering ourself in case he turns it around in the 2nd half of this season. I hope he does, he hasnt had much luck since joining us, and if we could get him back to pre leg break form and fitness, it would save us 30 or 40 mill in the market.

If the club was desperate for him to stay, they'll have handed him a proper contract.
Shame how it's gone so far. Hoping for a miracle.

Good. Will most likely sell him and buy a new LB.

Fellaini was a player that the manager trusted getting plenty of game time.

In fact Jose has consistently lavished Fellaini with praise and has mentioned how important the player is to him. Same can't be said for Luke who struggles to make the matchday squad even when fit.

As others have said it could easily be a move to boost his sell-on value but I really hope he gets fit and gets a crack of the whip. I'm not ready to give up on him (some would say face reality) yet.

Sell him cheap, hopefully to a lesser, less pressure club so he can regain the fitness, confidence amd form back. Insert buy back clause and hopefully United will trigger it.

Does it include a clause that must lose weight?

It's obviously a asset enhancing move rather than an indication of his worth to the team. He's a young, English, home-grown and still has a lot of potential so in his market could still fetch north of 20-25 million.

I think we just triggered the +1 clause in his contract.

Seems an odd move, even if only to attempt to recoup a transfer fee in a sale

How on earth is it an odd move to trigger a clause that costs the club nothing but allows us to bring in a transfer fee?

Don't think we ll make much money, even with the +1 added. Probably a difference of 1 or 2M at the most.

Yeah, kind of don't get how this is odd either. Worst case scenario we pay him to stick around for another year.

Odd only because if the player himself is looking to leave due to how he's been marginalized, this only restricts his options - i.e. he has to stick around longer under a coach who doesn't appear to count on him rather than giving it a go elsewhere

Why would the club give a crap about that? These clauses don't require the players consent.

    The club has two options:

    1. Do nothing and he's a free agent come the end of the season, so can leave on a free
    2. Trigger the clause and in the summer invite offers for him so we can recoup a tranfer fee

Option 2 is the only one that makes sense. Even if we only got a transfer fee of £1 million it would be a million quid for no effort, and he'll obviously go for more than that

My same thoughts to be honest. Bit of a non-story really. Just allows us to recoup something.

Yeah, reckon this is just bolstering the amount we can receive for him. I still think he's an excellent prospect but he simply isn't going to be given the nurturing time to realise it here. The pecking order has been made clear, I just don't think we'll see Shaw playing and starting multiple games to get himself back up to speed. Partly down to injuries, but most likely down to the manager just not fancying him there.

AKA "Player not showing enough in training to impress the manager or showing the hunger to be better than the others competing for his position"

I am not claiming that my assumptions are correct, but I don't see why we are blaming Jose in this affair.
