Make your best all time XI then make a team to beat it.

A question that came into my head during a few of the recent drafts.

If you could make your perfect all time XI it would still have weaknesses, be it balance or cohesiveness etc there is always a weakness. I thought it would be interesting to see if people could make there perfect all time XI and then find another team that could exploit their weaknesses and win the game more often than not.

I'm sure people could come up with loads that would get a draw by being ultra defensive but I want to see if people think it can be achieved to find a team that would actually beat the best XI more often than not.

See so your perfect team has a lightweight midfield so you'd make a second team to try and expose that.

Working with the Magnus XI I'd go something like...

A MF 5 of Cattermole, Souness, Vinnie Jones, Carlton Palmer & Frimpong is going to smash Xavi, Iniesta & Messi all round the park, still have the time & the athleticism to sit on Roberto Carlos to stop him getting forward & then possesses enough guile (Souness taking a 10 minute break from the campaign of violence) to supply Jimmy Greaves & Luis Lima Top Ronaldo with enough chances to win. At the back, Skrtel, Baresi, McGrath & considerable divine intervention from above, should see off Pele, Maradona & crap Ronaldo who looks unhappy with life out on the right flank without too much trouble. Yet another clean sheet for the Golden Gloves of DDG whose selection is also all about the votes he should be good for in the poll.

    2-0 to us.

I'd have a midfield three of Keane, Vieira and Xavi to make sure that the dirty work got done, and the other team never saw the ball long enough to get that front four into the game. Maybe let the very attacking fullbacks get forward before picking them off with Figo and Robben on the break, with Van Nistelrooy taking whatever chances he gets.

Basically, a glamorous but weak side defensively have a job done on them by a workmanlike team with clinical finishing.

    -------------------Yashin------------------

    • Even more physicality than in the first team - Desailly, Breitner, Figueroa, Djalma, van Basten
    • The defenders are a good fit for the attackers stylistically
    • More natural width, providing more space for Maradona and inch-perfect crosses to van Basten
    • van Basten's aerial advantage over Baresi and Nesta
    • Maradona is still the most individually decisive player on the pitch
Also in consideration, keepers aside (there are a few who can replace my first choices without the drop in quality): Vogts to deal with Messi; Neeskens for Breitner, went with the latter as I consider him to be slightly superior on the ball; Di Stefano, Cruyff, C. Ronaldo for their undeniable quality, but went with a better tactical fit; L. Ronaldo - but van Basten is better equipped to deal with Baresi and Nesta

Dzajic and Desailly are the worst players on the pitch, but their specific qualities will allow others to shine more brightly

Why no Messi on the right? Granted, he picked both Garrincha and Best but it doesn't make sense to play wingerless formation when the opponent has Gambetta covered by Adams (oh, Mcgrath, but still, as good as he was he doesn't belong in the Baresi/Figueroa/Scirea tier)

I like how you think harms, was debating whether to put falcao or xavi in there. Went for xavi as he has better ball retention imo and alves for his partnership with messi.

Messi would've been a bit of an overkill. There's an edge in midfield as it is, the way I see it (particularly in terms of possession - which limits Maradona's time on the ball); aside from the qualitative differential in defense - which will be kept on its heels throughout. And the box-to-box duo of Van Hanegem + Neeskens was picked precisely because of their ability centrally and out wide, as opposed to someone like a Matthäus. Even aside from that, I'm fairly confident in the balanced duo of Maldini + Zanetti vs the wingers mano e mano.

    • Having a keeper is a huge advantage
    • Figueroa-Baresi vs Pele; Vogts-Figueroa-Desailly vs Cruyff; Baresi-Maldini-Beckenbauer vs Messi - just the right amount of physicality, intelligence and aggression in each duel
    • Pure wingers against attacking wingbacks in back-4 (although you have Rijkaard)
    • Maradona/Ronaldo will be a handful for a more physical Kohler and not very fast Moore - nitpicking, yes, but it may prove to be a marginal difference that will lead my side to victory. Aside from having a keeper that is

Glad this thread has taken off I think it really is interesting to see if someone can make a team that can't be beaten. The idea of beating the team above your post isn't a bad one either.

I don't think you'll ever get unanimous agreement about a team that can't be beaten. Thing you have to get right is the formation , and as boring as it is , 4-2-3-1 probably offers the most as you can have 6 solid defensive players and 4 difference makers .

    My unbeatable team would be

    Schmeichel

    Cafu
    Beckenbaeur
    Baresi
    Maldini

    Matthaus
    Varela

    Messi
    Maradona
    Cruyff

Any one of muller / pele/ Ronaldo

With this side , you have a classic defensive 4 but if Cafu slides too far up then it ends up a back 3 with those 3 undoubtedly in the top 5 defenders of all time list.

Matthaus and varela compliment each other well enough and Messi Maradona and cruyff together , on form , is impossible to stop. With pele Muller or Ronaldo feeding off the 3 attacking midfielders creativity , I just can't see how any set up can beat that team. Limit it, yes . Score against it , yes. But beat it every time over 90mins ?

Only way I can see of beating that team is to starve you of possession and use the slight lack of height to grab a goal.

Not got a full 11 to mind but I'd double up on attacking you're right side which is undoubtedly more attacking than the left. Then you go 3 in the middle with 2 excellent passers and one destroyer than can combine that passing.

will beat them. Cruyff-Maradona-Messi is a clusterfeck and I don't know why you didn't pick the best defensive midfielder ever. Pele - Garrincha legendary unbeaten pairing is a bonus, with Platini and Falcao pinging the balls to them
