Salty thread. Every winning manager is a "cheque book" manager. A lot of bitterness in here. We've signed one player ffs..

Hardly salty, if anything City is getting lauded too much in this forum.

Apologies, I wasn't aware City had just spent 100m on a striker. Who have we bought?

In fairness there are a few saying we're doing well, the majority though saying things like "cheque book manager", "Pep will only promote youngsters who are good enough" as if thats a bad thing. I'm sure other manager play youngsters who aren't good enough... Not every team has a Rashford or Alli (the later technically being a signing). As I said we've signed one player, we'll probably finish with 4 or 5 same as most clubs like yourselves. Worst comment as usual coming from a Liverpool fan because Klopp never spends a cent.

I think it's because everybody is jumping on Jose's head for supposedly not liking or playing youngsters and yet Pep is considered as someone who is giving youth a chance massively. Of course you'll play a youngster if he's good enough not just for the sake of it.

So Pep is signing Ederson to be his No.1

Caballero has gone. Hart is going. What about Bravo? Pay cheque aside, for what reason would he stay and be No.2?

Do you guys reckon they'll outspend us again this summer?

They've signed Silva and over on BM their ITK reckons they've got Mendy and Ederson all wrapped up too.

They also believe they'll get Walker and Fabinho. Would take their spending to near 200M and that's without sorting out their issues at CB.

Also, seems to be some talk about Neymar over there as a possibility.

Close to sign Ederson from Benfica. Pep are trying to buy the league. Hope he finishes 10th next season.

No chance on Neymar, he must be due a pay rise if we are being chucked in the mix. But I think the other 4 would be definite targets, they would pretty much transform our squad and we'd be ready for next season. Anything after that would be to replace any big sales - e.g. If Aguero goes then we might be in for Sanchez etc.

Jose does get a hard time with youth but last season Rashford aside he didn't give anyone a game unless he had to. Pep is the same. Pep is not some genius like many make out and most City fans agree, he's one of the top managers along with many others, he simply had an unreal generation click at the right time at Barca. In the same way Fergie couldn't reproduce the class of 92, despite being probably the best manager of all time. Simple fact in football seems to be the most expensive team wins the league. Sad but true.

Pep is no different, nor is Jose or whoever. Leicester ironically were the exception but here's an interesting article that states cheque book manager are the only league winners.

I'll not proclaim Pep some god nor Jose some idiot (though I do have my issues with Jose even before he joined you guys). I just find the whining about Pep spending money and not playing youth ironic while some are calling for Griezmann, Belloti, Fabinho and a top CB. You have to spend to win and in the PremierLeague its even more true as its become a flat our arms race. Taking inflation into account City's spending is not nearly as crazy as Chelsea's early era but there are so many teams armed with big money competing for one trophy, he who buys best and usually he who buys most will win.

Can we setup a sweepstake for who of Pep's summer signings will be the first to profess, "I've learnt more in my first month with Pep, than in the rest of my career."

Edit: My money is on Walker.

Two of Wengers three title wins were with the league most expensive starting XI and the other with its 2nd most expensive because Ranieri was squandering money at Chelsea. I usually congratulate you but like the Liverpool supporters said over your moaning last day of the season, your spitefulness shines through. I hope we give up on Walker and take Bellerin and than sign Alexis just because we can and I guarantee you'll be closer to 10th than us.

You're misunderstanding the thread. Nobody is "salty" because he's signing players. The reputation he got was that he doesn't spend too much and encourages academy players to grow while Jose was criticised for being a chequebook manager and not playing youth.

He's still a terrific coach but he should be judged on the same barometer as Jose.

Then we agree, they're the same, yet Jose gets more criticism for the same thing.

You are the least club i hate among the top 6. I just find it funny that the so-called best manager in the world needs to buy like a maniac to play his favourite style.

Silva, Ederson and Mendy seem wrapped up, which would get their spending around 130-140m. Adding Fabinho and Walker would be 220-230m. They seem to also chase Sanchez and Van Dijk. They will be close to or even over 300m. Plus last year with 175m spending, Pep would be close to 500m in 2 years. Rip City youth

Yeah I also forgot to mix in Sanchez with them becoming more and more confident he will sign @Adisa

They'll be involved in some exciting games next season for sure.

100%, I think as a club United get more press in general both good and bad, its why City fans say "Always good stories bout United" and United fans say "Press getting stuck into us while ignoring City". In reality you generate alot more clicks and newspaper sales so you get alot more and bigger press. Pep has got stick all season over everything and the same % of criticism as Jose, just not as much because City aren't Barca or United so there are far less articles.

City are going to end up spending nearly £300M by the time this window closes. I can see Pep buying up to six players, it was clear this season that he wasn't happy with the squad he had. A lot of players there who weren't good enough to play in his system. He'll have no excuses next season if they don't win anything again. It's make or break time for him.

The league is still gonna be very tight, especially because all the top 6 will play in Europe next season. The Champions League is still a bit out of a reach for all the english clubs, instead.
I don't know, he can easily end up trophyless again.

Every manager does. I know sometimes I'm overly defensive of City but read the article I linked in the post with Ban. You spend, you win. You don't, at best you come 4th. Thats not an Arsenal dig its stastically fact, when you had the most impressive and expensive starting XI you won the league, when you didn't you came 3rd-4th. 2004 aside.

At City when we did we won the league or were there about, when we had the 15th most expensive we were battling relegation. Football is an has been money since 1992. United of course, like Arsenal worked hard and generated their own, ourselves and Chelsea won the lotto. But getting back to my Pep point, Alex Ferguson wouldn't have won the league with the 8th most expensive side, like Pep he had one amazing young generation but bought well for the rest of his trophies. Not a dig at Ferguson, those who spend the most, win the most. Its why Bayern dominate Germany, Real and Barca Spain, United dominated England for years.. Celtic in Scotland. England is now unique in having a £400m squad is no guarantee of a title race because 1-6 are so strong.

Can we laud Peps style when it takes 500m to realise it fully and to build a squad that isn't fighting for 4th?
His biggest challenge and it's a world record spend. It says a lot.

He won't be as unfortunately putting in a title chase and not winning a cup is seen as more important than winning the FA or League Cup. Not something I agree with but the higher ups want CL exposure and CL money. I'd rather the trophies myself which is why I'd say even you guys had a more succesful season than us, but in the board room people don't see it that way.

If he finished 15 points off the top and bombs out of CL early days an FA and or League Cup trophy/trophies won't save him.
If he made CL semi's, lost the league by 3 points and won nothing his job would be secure.

Its not as simple as silverware. Just look at the most successful club thread here.. some people have Arsenal 3rd (as do I imho, as being starved of trophies for so long I'm happy with anything City win) but others say 6th because your not in the CL.

My point is that Guardiola has always been known for giving youth a chance, to build on young players from academy. Now he is just becoming like Mourinho. So if Josè is always criticized for that the same thing goes for Pep ;)

Pep is like the Roy Keane of managers; he needs to work with a very high level of footballer, so that they can grasp his concepts and produce the calibre of football that he expects. Pep will not coach a pub team and turn them into Conference contenders. Keane couldn't realise that most players aren't as good as he was, so had unrealistic expectations. Pep needs to be working with world class players. Then he moulds them into an organised unit.

Mourinho is a more pragmatic manager in terms of defensive shape and is a good man manager, so he can extract extra levels from players. But his football isn't as expansive or complicated.

If Pep is given the 6/7 players he needs to replace the ageing squad players he's allowing to leave, City will come very close to winning the league and will be the media darlings if the level of football on show matches the cheques being written.

This has to be bollox, United were outspending everyone, Leeds and Chelsea were spending like it was going out of fashion both on the verge of going bust and Liverpool were spending more than us if I remember right. Newcastle had done some crazy spending in the 90s too.

Also our spending during this time was typically funded off selling some of our best players like Anelka, Overmars, Petit etc

https://sports.vice.com/en_uk/artic...ed-football-inflation-and-the-transfer-window this is the link I posted earlier, I'd like to see the guys actual maths per players etc.. but here it is. Chelsea spending didn't go crazy until after Roman in 2003 and Arsenal titles were in 1998 and 2002. Roman bought Chelsea and started their spending around invincibles time. It does look like the guy has done his homework in the article though.

They'd take 3rd again over an FA or League Cup. Personally I wouldn't. Fans want trophies, board rooms want money and CL exposure (for more money).

Man City is doing a good thing by signing players early. This way it ensures that the new players take part of the preseason and adapt quicker. We'd love it to see for our respective clubs so it may explain a few bitter reactions.

Well, at least City are going to make me bank next season. There's no way that team they're assembling won't be wiping the floor with 70% of the league.

45 million for Ederson? are they mental!!!!!

I don't really get why they bought Silva, i mean he is a great player but they have loads of good players in that areas its at the back its a mess!

they need a centre back and two full backs and a defensive midfielder capable of playing in peps system..........
