Was expected, still wouldn't be surprised to see him move on in the summer though.

Good news, hopefully he will show more of his worth on the pitch, has a good squad role to play.

Don't think he'll get an extension beyond next season. I expect he's staying so that we don't have to replace him until summer 2019 and can limit our focus to areas Mourinho has spoken of to strengthen in the market.

Good news, did he have a one year option on his contract or is this fresh terms?

Great news! Brilliant player to have around and exactly what the dressing room needs: serial winner. He has quite a few honours doesn't he.

Not a bad player at all and doesn't seem to get the recognition as some other players.

Either way to tie a quality player into a contract is not a bad thing in the current climate and if he moves on you can still get a decent fee for him. I think Utd are doing good business lately and slowly but surely Mourinho is assembling a top notch squad.

Glad he's staying. Not the best player off the bench, but definitely a great squad player you can start against weak opposition. Always has a goal and a bit of class in him.

The pessimist in me thinks that we did this to get extra cash in the summer. Really don't want to see him go.

Very popular and important player in the dressing room and a tremendous spokesperson for the club. Not unusual to keep these kind of model pros at the club as it's not just about his influence on the pitch....

Top player, great professional, I'm happy. Probably doesn't quite make our strongest 11 these days, but we will need him.

It's crutial we have players around his age bracket at our club. He will enter his 30's here and provide so much experience in the coming seasons.

Good squad player to have, very likeable and very liked by the other players. Keeping Mata and Herrera will I think go a long way to keeping De Gea, still think we’ll sign a right sided forward but Mata is experienced and versatile.

Glad he got an extension. Very intelligent man and important figure in the dressing room. He still has a role to play.

Good. I wouldn't mind replacing him with Ozil but he's a good intelligent footballer and as our team improves maybe we'll get the best out of him?

I remember being told that Mkhitaryan's signing meant Mata should be sold as the Armenian was so clearly the better player.

Point being, pros of Mata's quality are easier to upgrade in theory than they are in reality. We should keep a hold of him until he's been pushed so far down the pecking order as to be practically irrelevant. As is he'll still play plenty.

personally I am very pleased with this news ,seems a little undervalued on here by some and I hope those that say he will be gone in the summer are wrong there is definitely a place for him at the club.

Reading the comments in here I think people will hate me for saying this but I think the reason why we gave him a new contract so Mata can be sold next summer with decent money, he's going to be 30 this year and by next summer he'll be 31 and right now his status is just squad player. I got my hype on both Gomes and Chong to take his spot when he turns to 31 or 32.

But may be I'm wrong as well about him being sold when he turns 31 or 32, may be he can continue play for us until 35 years old because he's not a physical and pacey player, so losing his pace & power isn't a problem for his playing style.

He's a glue guy: does the things on and off the pitch that keep the squad working in harmony. Would take Maherz in a heartbeat, but Mata's a classy guy.

Was going to post pretty much what you said. Mata seems a great guy and I am sure his presence helps moral. Always seems happy to play and never really seems to sulk when he doesn't. He is a great asset on so many levels and DDG loves him.

Interesting that this has been announced by the club - with quotes from both the player and manager.

The likes of Shaw, Herrera, Blind and Young were reported to have had their options invoked - but no announcement.

He's not been great this season but he's still capable of class moments and he'll be a good option to have in the squad.

Plus he's obviously a great bloke, I'm happy he's staying
