On Fellaini: "He is a great player. If you see how he works every day in the training sessions, the games he played didn't surprise me -- that he played well, that he scored goals. He doesn't have the credit that he deserves. I don't know why. But I really enjoy playing with him, and I am sure that we will continue like this. It's nice to have him in the team because he can defend, on long balls he is strong and he's always dangerous in attack. I am sure that he will show all his quality this season."

On Pogba: "We know that he will be out for some time. He's very important for us, he's a great player, but I am sure that he will be ready soon. But we also have great players to play instead of him. We showed in the last few games that everyone is ready to play and everyone can help us."

On himself: "I didn't have preseason. I trained alone. I can feel it in some parts of the game. My body is not ready yet and I have some difficulty, of course, but I try to hide that and to play simple. I will be better."

Don't understand why Chelsea pushed him out to the point of not giving him a pre season.

He's done very well joining the attack as well as taking care of his defensive work considering he's not 100%. Although from what I've seen recently he hasn't been quite as keen to get up the pitch, so perhaps he could do with a break or some time to work on his fitness.

So he's still in pre-season mode now, considering how well he is currently playing? Looks like he has another gear or two

The Pogba bit doesn't sound good :(

He's saying the exact thing every player says about his teammates. Basically he's saying nothing of substance, which is none of a surprise.

Ok. If you say so. Wasn't he the player of the season last year?

Also - I'm quite sure that Hererra will start against Liverpool, which means Jose will trust him in the big games.

Even if he was the player of the season last year, Pogba and Matic are better than him. He's a squad player, nothing more.

And yes he's overrated, a lot of fans think that he should be the next captain and that he's better than Kante :houllier:

Herrera is the logical backup choice for Matic's position. The two will rarely start together. That's why he isn't mentioned. Fellaini is Jose's closest like for like Pogba replacement with the squad we have (both players who Matic will be partnered with most often).

It's true though. Herrera last season was played deep and excelled at interceptions. That's where Jose sees him. The Matic role. Fellaini is box to box. He gets forward like Pogba and tries to score. He won't ever dictate play from deep because that's Matic's job, or Herrera's if he's in the team.

It isn't that Fellaini is as good as Pogba, as he clearly isn't, but that Fellaini is the best option we have in terms of doing a similar job in the same system.

I don't know if we can use the roles last season to tell us how Jose views or feels about a player entirely. He needed Ander to sit deep to protect Carrick who couldn't run and to free up Pogba to get forward. Fellaini was used b2b, but he also operated in certain matches and moments as a DM. When Herrera has made appearances this season he seems to be getting forward more frequently as a b2b, like against Southampton when he skied his chance late in the match.

Yes, Pogba and Matic are indeed better than him and he is a squad player. But he is an immensely talented one at that. He has a lot of qualities which should help him play enough games this season.

In a 3 man midfield - he would definitely be starting each game. That's the kind of squad player you need in and around the team.

Herrera can't dictate the play, we saw that last season when Pogba was injuried.

Agreed. His performance at Anfield last season was one of the best I've ever seen for United. He was literally everywhere.

Considering I was indifferent about Matic coming to Utd, I have to admit he really has impressed me.

Class act, a must starter and a vital player for Utd's expectations.

Another very clever signing by Mourinho.
