Even though I like all action midfielders in the mould of Schweinsteiger best, I’d have to go for Modric (ballon d’or inconsequential). Modric has been one of the best for years. Imo a big reason for RM’s recent success.

I would go for Schweinsteiger, as weird as that may sound considering Modric just won the Ballon d'Or. I think this year's Ballon d'Or contenders were relatively weak and Modric year was no better than Schweinsteiger's peak years.

Modric. His technical ability far surpassed Schweinsteiger.

Modric more technical and classy perhaps, but I prefer Schweini. His performance in the 2014 WC Final will go down in history as one of the all time great performances on that stage.

Schweinsteiger for me. Modric is far more aesthetically pleasing player but Bastian at his best was the driving force that won the CL and World Cup.

Modric is a wonderful player, but more of a cog in a machine, whereas Bastian is an engine.

Love them both and impossible to pick. Modric will probably go down as the greater of the two given the accolade he picked up today.

What role will they play? Who are their teammates? What is the teams style of play? Are they playing alongside a press resistant midfielder? Is midfield with a point facing forward or backwads?

Couldn't of put it better, Modric is absolutely quality on his day, but he is a cog in the machine, the machine would be Schweinsteiger on his day, he could do it all from midfield, okay his passing wasn't as good and didn't have as much flair as Modric's but still..

I’ll have to go with the Pig Rider. Guy was a midfield by himself on his day. Don’t get me wrong, Modric is absolute quality, but if I were building a team and had to choose one of them, I would go with Schweinsteiger. Not only was he an outstanding player, but also a very good leader.

Bastian, although I think they’d compliment each other as a midfield perfectly.

    BFS.

Still gutted he was that over the hill when he left Bayern, because BFS is one of the better nicknames in sports history.

Modric edges it for me. I don't think Schweinsteiger could control a midfield like Modric.

Schweinsteiger had about two season that were better than any of Modric's but, Modric had more good seasons.

Both great players, i'd put them on much the same level, maybe Modric slightly ahead. Neither are really among my 5-10 favourite midfielders to watch from their respective region, but they have a resume that speaks for itself.

I'd back Schweinsteiger to dig a team out from trouble more than I would Modric.

He can also contribute at the very top level on a similar level to Modric.

In other words he's more versatile in the situations you could find yourself in

Depends what role you want them to play though..

Zidane vs Bramble all over again.

if I had to pick one in their prime for our side, I would pick Bastian.. A) he has a fantastic name. B) He was a fantastic player.

Then why is Kroos needed? He averages 25 more passes than Modric this season

Clearly Modric and by a comfortable margin. Saying that as a German. Kroos is considerably better than Schweinsteiger was, too, and IMO Modric is also (slightly) better than Kroos during his prime. I think he is the best pure midfielder I've seen after Xavi and Iniesta.

I am saying this as a german too: This is BS (not Bastian Schweinsteiger btw). Ballack is the only german midfielder in this century which was (slightly) better than Schweinsteiger. Kroos is probably the third best choice. Compared to the other two, Kroos is quite limited. A specialist, not an allrounder.

Schweini just had everything at a top top level. Defending, attacking, passing, shooting, leadership, presence, pressing resistance (control), vision, mentality, etc.

You can't even compare Modric and Schweinsteiger because they are different type of players in my opinion. Modric is a specialist while Schweini was an allrounder. And allrounder, which are that good at everything, are reeaaaaally rare.

It's tight but I'd take Modric. Ballon D'or or not he's the conductor of the team, whilst Bastian would be its engine.

A bit like Xavi vs Iniesta. Both BFS and Modric would dovetail nicely alongside each other but Modric is the more talented player and has led Real to 4 CL titles where he was absolutely instrumental.

If I have to choose one of them to build around I'd take Modric.

Kroos is nowhere near as good as Schwiensteiger or Modric. Plenty of better midfielders around throughout the years... Pogba, Pjanic, Verratti, Thiago, Vidal and others have been playing better than him for years without half the recognition.

Disagree with the bold. None of them has been better nor as sucessful as Kroos, even though as a type of player only Thiago and Verratti are comparable to him. For example Kroos is the exact opposite to a warrior like Vidal.

But i do agree with Schweinsteiger and Modric beeing head and shoulders above him quality wise. In Germany are all the talks about Kroos right now, because he is one of the very few stars in our current generation which are still in their prime. So people in Germany watching now our pre game analysis are getting the feeling that he is one of the greatest players in german history, which is not true. Also our papers like to go crazy for players which are playing for Real Madrid. Same for Özil back then. He was voted german player of the year back to back multiple times in a time where Bayerns generation, such as Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Müller, Boateng, Neuer, etc. were in their prime too and delivered much more.

This thread led me to look at some numbers and Modric didn't get over 10 assists in a season once in his whole career. Every other top midfielder this century got over 10 pretty consistently and usually they at least had a season where they got close to 20.

    Why is that?

He doesn't get forward enough to impact the game at the top end enough. I reckon if you compared his numbers for Croatia to his club form it'd be quite different.

Neither is good to build around, but rather elevate whatever you are building around.

At all time level, who'd be their peers? Attack, defence, wide midfield, passing....all in one?

Even then, Xavi had a 30 assist season and 15+ was normal for his career. Iniesta had 10+ assists regularly, same for pretty much every top midfielder this century. Modric didn't have more than 10 assists in a season once, he's not good at all at playing the final ball or creating opportunities.

For all the ways a midfielder can influence a game, Modric is only world class at retaining the ball. He's not great at making decisions close to goal, not much of a goalscorer or creator, defensively he's good but not superb, not really a physical presence... not saying he doesn't deserve the praise, he's been the best midfielder in the world in the past 5 years but Madrid's success in the past few years has led to people ignoring his flaws. He's a tier below the likes of Pirlo and Schweinsteiger and two tiers below Xavi and Iniesta.

Very good post. This is for I see it too. Schweinsteiger was such a all-round player, had everything in his locker.
