There's been quite a lot of talk about both players on the Caf with one being an established world class no 10 and the other being a hugely promising midfielder. With Ozil being available on a free and Savic costing somewhere in the region of 90m, it's probably more likely that we'd go for Ozil. Very different players, and I'd be happy with either.

Hypothetical fantasy as this is, it's still interesting to know which one people would prefer.

With Ozil we'd probably continue with 4231
    Rom
    Martial Ozil Sanchez
    Pogba Matic
With Savic we'd have the option of 433
    Martial Rom Sanchez
    Pogba Matic Savic

    Thoughts?

I prefer the 4-3-3, Mourinho himself prefers the 4-3-3.

Neither. One's too similar to Pogba and the other won't fit a 433 unless he ups his defensive game significantly.

    Savic-Milinkovic.

Ozil is 30 this year and on the downward slope where as SMS is only 22 and has a tremendous upside, especially under a top manager like Mourinho.

I agree that Milinkovic-Savic is similar to Pogba but I see that as a feature rather than a drawback. Milinkovic-Savic works harder defensively too.

Tough one but why not both? I saw a report that said Ozil would be happy to be a back up player if he could come here. May not be true but I think it'd give us flexibility and options on par with City. They have Bernardo sat on the bench.

The similar to Pogba argument is also a bit misplaced imo. Ultimately, you need a big squad of top players so the manager has plenty of choices during different situations, especially with injuries, suspensions, and a grueling fixture schedule as factors.

I think that's a stretch. Can't see such a talent being happy to be a squad player during his last few glory years. Also think that the financial outlay might be too much to acquire both. If we do end up going for Ozil, I think we either tie down Fellaini to a new contract or get another midfielder (maybe Dendoncker) who'd be happy to be a squad player.

I don't think Savic is like Pogba, apart from being good on the ball and very tall. They are different players. But that argument isn't great IMV. If there was another Pogba going, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

I'd take Savic as it gives us more formation options and we can play Pogba in his best position.

Sure, but the whole point of a 433 is to free Pogba. To do that, we'd need someone happy to play slightly deeper and dictate play like Modric would. SMS loves to make those late runs into the box like Pogba and I'm not sure how he is as a playmaker, so I feel like we'd end up with Pogba dropping deep a lot anyway.

I agree with the bolded, but for the prices Lazio are quoting (70+m), I don't see us buying him just so that we have another option. If we get him, he'll surely start most games.

Milinković-Savić all day long for me. Much more of a proper central midfielder, which is what we need, rather than another number 10 who can kinda also play on the wing. Would much rather see us getting a proper out-and-out winger, and a real central midfielder.

I want to see us play the 4-3-3 going forward so I would like to see us go out and buy a midfield. Savic or Seri would be good options.

I'd say, if we have the chance to, sign both. Gives us some really good tactical options, 4-2-3-1 in games where we're going to dominate; 4-3-3 in games against teams that'll try flooding the midfield. If I had to choose I think we'd seriously be missing a trick not getting Ozil on a free, you don't get players of his quality for nothing.

Neither, but if they were the only 2 options we had I'd go for Ozil simply because he's free and has a good understanding with Sanchez.

From a footballing perspective I'd take SMS. But seeing the faces of Arsenal fans if we take Özil from them too would just be too joyful, so I'd probably go for that.

SMS. But Ozil is world class.

SMS is more of a preference due to the formation.

If just one, then SMS, because we probably need 2 central midfielders since Fellaini is probably off. If we get Ozil, then there's no point at all in keeping Mata tbh, but would be a huge upgrade anyway. So both would be nice

I wouldn't necessarily want Savic, but I would prefer a 433. That top option with Ozil looks phenomenal, though.

Not sure what Jose will do next season, but he's always preferred a 4231 for the majority of the season, moving to a 433 or solidifying his 4231 in the tougher games.

It could be that he brings in a number 10 - whether that be Ozil or someone, and then benches or puts him wide like he did with Oscar, for example.

    So:

    4231

    Lukaku
    Martial Ozil Sanchez
    Pogba Matic

    433

    Sanchez Lukaku Ozil
    Pogba Matic New CM

He did it at Madrid too.
