How has his stock fallen so low? He was rated highly at Norwich.

Turns out the winter transfer window of 17/18 won't be remembered for the Alexis saga but rather Stoke's coup of Paul Lambert, manager extraordinaire.

I laughed out loud when I read this. He's been on a cold streak since 2011, costing him 4 jobs. But still he seems to be moving upwards in the ladder.

Jesus, they would have been better off appointing a interim coach and seeing whats there at the end of the season if this is what they are left with. Poor appointment, what has he done to earn a job back at Premier League level? Last 2 jobs in the Championship, and didn't exactly do anything special with them. Thought they dodged a bullet when O'Neill turned them down, but now they have this.

Hopefully this means they finally go down. Deserved for a PL club who seemingly has Lambert as 3rd choice, or any choice at all really.

    From the Stoke website:

Peter Coates said: “Paul greatly impressed us with his knowledge of our squad and had a clear plan of how he would improve our results.

“He’s a man who backed himself as a player, none more so than when he turned down contract offers in Scotland to go on trial in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, and it’s obvious he adopts the same approach as a manager.”

John Coates added: “Paul has been successful in management at clubs with a strong and stable background and with local ownership – the kind of foundation we are able to give to our managers.

“We were determined to appoint someone with Premier League experience or an extensive knowledge of English football. We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him to help achieve our goals.”

The website also states that arguably Lambert's greatest achievement as a manager was keeping Aston Villa in the Premier League against all expectations in difficult circumstances.

I, for one, do not wish to jinx tonight's game so I would say Lambert is a good appointment for Stoke. Watch them rampage at Old Trafford now.. :nervous:

Strange one but I really rated the job he done at Norwich and even early on at Villa. Stoke seem to have some dreadful characters and not sure this is an inspiring move. Would like to see Lambert turn his career around though.

How the hell has he managed that after his Blackburn and Wolves stints? Think he'll keep them up as Stoke have some decent players and there's so many poor teams down there but it's a baffling appointment.

Well he wont literally be the only person who wanted it as there will be a queue of managers for any PL job, but from the chairmans comments it sounds like Lambert has done a fair bit of prep about his plan for turning it around
