    If true, the US’ run as world superpower ended today.

    Elections are on March 18. I am not a Putin fan, but I do believe that the information is true. However, I doubt that it means curtains for US being a superpower. I doubt there is one anyways. It is a multi-polar world with axis gradually shifting towards China, in my opinion.

    It doesn't really change the game. MAD between Russia and the US has applied even post-1991. The US has never developed the capability to actually defend from a full-scale attack of Russia's ICBM, nor the Russians from a full scale US ICBM + SLBM attack.

    Because of the above I'd also argue that the superpower status (whatever exactly it entails) never depended a non-existent position of nuclear superiority to Russia.

    Finally, from a certain point of view its not shocking. Nuclear weapons development pretty much stagnated after the 80s, and the systems from that time are still the backbone of both the US and Russian forces (the Ohio-class SSBN & the SS-18 ICBM respectively). If one of the sides decides to pour money into it again, then applying 40 years of additional scientific development, interesting things are likely to come out. But entirely superfluous if you ask me.

    Not really true, is it?

    Doesn't the Russchis have nuclear subs with enough firepower to wipe an entire country? They would probably be able to launch those from multiple places stealthily as well.

    This weapon doesn't change anything.

    The next superpower will be China anyways, they are already so far ahead of Russia, and with their new silk road completed coupled with their sneaky re-colonization of Africa they'll have the road paved for themselves.

    US's superpower status has little to do with their ability to wipe out a country imo.

    It doesn't matter a bit. Both US and Russia can destroy the world with nuclear weapons, considering that they have thousands of them.

    @MTF @SwansonsTache

    The Russian arsenal could at least be countered with anti-ICBM missile defense systems and with the US Navy’s anti-submarine defenses.

    My comments about our status as superpower are due to this cruise missile’s ability to defeat those.

    @Raoul
    We can only hope.

    Not worried about Russia vs USA.. I think the one area that people should be worried about is the oncoming collision of Russia and China as they start to compete affecting each others sphere of influence.

    The Russians are a non-factor in terms of economics. Its the USA/EU/and China that are the major players there.

    Exactly, Russia are trying to grow their economic power and interest and they are competing in areas that I believe will have them on a collision course with China. Putin is trying to force Russia back to the top. Militarily they have plenty and with Chinas one road one belt initiative and can see possible frictions ahead. All I'm saying is people should be more concerned by that than any idea of Russia vs USA.

    I'm drawing a distinction between the post Cold War unipolar American hegemony and our new status if Russia indeed has this weapon.

    Be interesting to see the calm response by the US. In all seriousness though, it's just posturing by Putin. After all the progress since the end of the cold war, really backward and negative step. Nobody wants this, there would be no winners if the two sides exchanged ballistic missiles.

    I would be more worried if China and Russia teamed up. If they don't get along it is just beneficial.

    Fortunately, the Russians won't be able to grow much economically since 50% of their federal budget is based on the price of crude oil, so which ever way crude oil goes - so goes the Russian economy. They have little else in terms of exports that they can offer beyond oil and gas, and until that changes, they will remain smaller economically than the likes of Italy and California.

    Okay. I'm not sure what to believe in when I hear about new weapons systems. Apparently Russia developed a weapon that was able to wipe all electronics on board of US ship in the Mediterranean in 2015. Like EMP but way more advanced. It's probably bullshit.

    I always thought the term super power referred to being able to project power and influence on a global scale, not the ability to turn sand into glass.

    Russia has always had plenty of nukes to destroy the US and world many times over, as does the US. I doubt Russia has the capabilities to project their power around the world using conventional means.

    The issue in the present (or maybe now past) scenario as far as US anti-ballistic missile defense is in the numbers, from what I understand. There's less than 100 interceptors deployed, which don't even have a near-100% success rate individually, meaning multiple interceptors for each incoming warhead. And the total Russian arsenal of ICBMs is estimated at ~1000 warheads. That's why I meant the US hasn't ever had an actual defense for Russia specifically, not because they can't shoot down the exiting technology, but because they can't shoot down all of them.

    I know, but in those instances even the ones that get through will still be detected before they hit and we will know that we need to protect the top level of the US government and launch a counter strike.

    If these cruise missiles are real, we won’t know that we need(ed) to do those things until it’s already hit.

    Russia clearly doesn't need fancy rockets to destroy us. With a helpful POTUS we re perfectly capable of doing that ourselves.

    Bear in mind the best way for Russia to attack the US or any other country would probably be to just walk the bomb in on a boat or lorry - sum of all fears style

    It may not even be immediately obvious who did it

    Means nothing really. Neither would have any interest in blowing the other up.
    Would would that achieve? The US' GDP is more than China & Russia's combined

    True. Its the ability to project power any where in the world that makes the US a super power, not the ability to destroy the world.

    I think this graphic paints a fairly decent picture of the ability to project power:
