Who is the better player, and why?
More consistent goalscorer, scores in the big matches.
This season? RVP
We've had this debate loads of times.
Van Persie is the better striker. Why? Because he is in the form of his life.
This season, Van Persie.
Overall, have to take the injury records into consideration.. I'd rather have Rooney's last 5 years than Van Persie's.
He kicked on at 28, Rooney might do the same.
It is like taking two of the hottest women in the world and asking who the fittest is.
It's close.......but Rooney. His record in big matches this year has been terrific (so has VP's).
Two wonderful footballers. I don't think you could argue with anybody picking either of them.
So does Rooney, no?
And Rooney doesn't?
Van Persie's having a brilliant season and a half, thanks to an unprecedented run without injuries. Every time Rooney picks up an injury he almost always has a dip in form on his comeback (same is true for almost everyone)
We'll get a better idea of the true comparison if/when Rooney gets the same luck with injuries Van Persie has recently had (and yes, I appreciate how bizarre it sounds to talk about him being lucky with injuries!)
Also worth bearing in mind that Van Persie is closer to his peak, as he's two years older.
So does Wayne, I think you'll struggle to find a bigger scorer in big matches than Wayne this season.
I prefer Van Persie - he's much better as a striker, but, despite his sometimes inconsistent form, Rooney is consistently fit, and therefore more reliable over a campaign. Wayne also offers more overall as his quality isn't as limited to attack as VP's is.
So, Wayne Rooney.
Although RvP is having a splendid year, from a career perspective (ie. taking the knee-jerk element of RvP being world class just this year), its Rooney.
This season alone? RVP... last 5 years? Wayne Rooney. Up front feeding of scraps for Arsenal? RVP. Up front, dropping deep, helping out in midfield and creating play going forward for Manchester United? Wayne Rooney.
So... my answer is Pavel Pogrebnyak
I didn't mean to say Rooney doesn't deliver in big games guys, I just feel if you were to give me Rooney or Van Persie in a big game, I would pick Van Persie.
I'd like both.
Persie is better striker, that's for sure. But overall, I would pick Rooney anyday.
This season, RVP.
Last 5 years ,Rooney.
Also who knows how good RVP would have been if not injured so often.
Both on form, I'd go for Rooney. Tough decision as there's almost nothing to choose between the 2 (I think either of them can do whatever the other one can), but I still think if Rooney was leading the line for us, he'd also have at least another 5+ goals to his name.
Currently Rooney is still scoring a shed load of goals even though he is currently playing as more of a playmaker.
How about a Rooney----RvP combo?
Van Persie this season looks like the player i thought Rooney would turn into when he was 18.
Spectacular goals, spectacular technique, brilliant hold up play and vision. RVP is simply on a different palnet to Rooney atm.
Rooney is still a top top player, but RVP has that extra bit of class atm that Rooney looked like he was going to have when he was tagged as the White Pele. Never quite hit those heights again for me im afraid.
Not gonna happen, our budget won't stretch to Rooney
Still feel Van Persie's being wasted a bit playing up top on his own. A bit similar to how we played Rooney up top alone a couple of seasons ago. Scored loads of goals, but we always knew he was curbing his all round game.
Rooney. He has more to his game than just attacking.
Based on their best two seasons, van Persie is comfortably the better player in almost every attribute. However, I'd have Rooney over him because of his versatility and superior injury record.
Fuuuck that... Van Persie doesn't have Rooney's passing vision. We've seen Rooney drop deep into midfield and play almost like Scholes.
Only one of them has scored 15+ and assisted another 5 at least in the past 8 straight years.....and when the team was built 100% around him as a striker who doesn't drop deep and do his own thing as much, he was just as good, maybe a little worse, but he's only played the same role RVP did this year for us for like a consistent injury free 7 months or so.
Rooney is easily far more effective everywhere else though, that's the clincher for me. The question should be....should we cash in on Hernandez and Welbeck to keep Berbatov and throw the bank at Van Persie?
Wayne Rooney has more all-round ability than Van Persie, and stays fit more than Van Persie. Van Persie, however, is more consistant as a striker than Rooney when he does play and is in the better form now. I'd go with Rooney though.
Passing is the one attribute where Rooney trumps van Persie, but the latter still notches up a similar amount of assists.
No thanks, I'd rather keep Chicharito and Welbeck.
Rooney every single time. He is essential to our play and works his bollocks off in midfield creating an extra man. Van Persie won't do that
Very weird of a question
This is true, Rooney is the only reason we can currently afford to play in two up front even when our opposition plays 3 in the middle.
Have a look at who Rooney has scored against this season.
the question is 'who is the better player'.
Rooney...he is just the best player in the Prem. simples.
RVP is the best striker atm no doubt.
Well it's where Van Persie plays.....except with Fabregas last year and well whoever in the role Rooney plays this year.
I wouldn't, all down to him being 29 when the next season starts though, if he were 26 or 27, I'd do that hypothetical move.
In response to the original question, Rooney is better player cos he can play in different positions and has done so throughout his career
EDIT: because he is! Rooneys overall game is far superior to Van Persie, he's capable of playing almost every attacking position on the pitch and is decent cover even for the CM position which makes him better player. If question was who is better striker then it would be Van Persie.
RVP is also the best striker in the premiership, by a bigger distance.
People seem to only think RVP has had one good season.
I recall him being pretty shit hot last year also, and the year before before he got injured he was scoring.
Still though it's obvious he doesn't stay as fit as Rooney, but I just thought I'd point that one out.
Van Persie has always been an outstanding striker, the only thing that stopped him before wasn't a lack of quality, but fitness.
This isn't a freak season in the sense he has got so much better out of nowhere, he hasn't, he's just been fitter, for a longer time.
Separate names with a comma.
