I agree with AFlair. Wazza is has got incredible control over his freekicks. Hope he becomes our main FK specialist next season.

Rooney is pretty good from close in, which a lot of freekick takers who hit the ball flush with the face of their foot struggle with getting the ball to come back down. Obviously from further out placing it is extremely difficult, unless you are Beckham.

I reckon he is par for the course, like most freekick takers, some good, some bad and some ugly. I can only think of a select few freekick takers throughout my time watching football that were considered a consistent threat when striking one.

He's got good placement, but he lacks the power that Ronaldo is able to get. Ronaldo can go long stretches without scoring one, but he hit a patch this season where he was scoring quite a few. Rooney won't ever have the power that Ronaldo has to score from further out, but he's shown improved placement this season. It would be nice to have a lefty though since Giggs won't be playing as much.

I'm surprised Young's taken as few FKs as he has.

Rooney is decent but not great at free kicks. He is a great player but he doesnt have the ranged accuracy to score free kicks regularily. He is more of a power over placement player when shooting from range, yet he goes for placement on most of his free kicks despite it not being his best ability. Id like to see him try to hit some more powerful, keeper's corner free kicks a'la Drogba at times. Would make him more unpredictable for keepers as well in the long run.

Im also surprised Young hasnt been given more of a go. Giggs is also pretty good at free kicks, but Rooney seems to be first in line to take them. Kinda sucks when your "main man" who will take most free kicks isnt that lethal. He has improved lately though, and his conversion rate is a lot better than it used to be. He was absolute turd for a few years, having not scored in 5 years or something at one point (Between the debut against Fenerbache and the West Ham game last season or something)

During the time Ronaldo was here, yes. But after Ronaldo left Rooney was our main free kick taker for around 2 seasons before he actually scored. I remember a lot of people on here being fed up with him taking our free kicks before he scored that West Ham free kick. Even then he has scored what, 4 free kicks during the last 2 seasons? Not great from a player who takes almost all our direct free kicks.

No he doesn't, it's been a fair share between him, Giggs and Nani, I think and in this last season Young has had a bite of the cherry as well. They've all had a go, I don't think we have one designated set piece (free kick specifically) taker, it's just whoever feels up for it at the time.

He's improved vastly this season, easily our best free kick taker.

iirc both his fk goals against Arsenal were rolled to Young, who stopped it and stepped back for Rooney to hit it. I don't know why they stopped doing that, it seemed to be working well.

I'm always a big fan of slightly changing the angle with that sort of play on a fk, especially if its in close.

I remember Giggs scoring like that at White Hart Lane maybe 3 seasons ago
