Even will be waiting a long time for somebody to come up with £50 million for Barkley.

Given the contract situation I think the most they could hope to get for him would be £30 million - if they hold out for £50 million i'd be very surprised if anybody paid it and he would leave for free at the end of his contract which would be completely dumb from Everton.

You see this shockingly often though. Clubs determined to get "full value" for player in demand, basically pricing themselves out of a deal. A year later, they leave for a fraction of the price, often after a disappointing season that sees demand drop radically.

So you consider Spurs a bigger club than Liverpool then? Interesting.

Koeman says he isn't confident Barkley will stay. Obviously theres a huge inventive for Barkley to stay after Koemans comments last week.

I never said spurs were a bigger club than either.

They took Cleverly on a free when we didn't accept the less money offered as we holded out for 8m or something. Chelsea got Cahill after paying 7m with half a season left after Bolton holded out for big money at the summer.

It would be interesting to see them sell Barkley for about 20m or less or free after holding out for 50.

He is just trying to create a bidding war. He didn't want to loose him at the end of next season for free.

Cant really see where he could fit in at any the clubs above Everton, so a bit shocked he's not signing a new deal, but might live to regret that decision

It will be funny when the bidding war is a 'derogatory' £25-30 million take it or leave it bid from one team.

(I say derogatory because to Everton he is worth £50 million bizarrely )

He would be a good signing for United imo.

If Barkley only has a year to go, he'll be 30m at the very max, we should be all over that.

We won't though, and he'll go to someone like Spurs and be excellent.

Take a look at Barkley's conversion rate stats:

Non-penalty goals scored from inside the area in the PL 3 from 38 shots

One free-kick and one other goal scored from 46 shots outside the area

Imagine how much abuse he would get on here if he repeated those percentages for United.

    Pass completion 83% (Lingard 88%)

A defensive liability. Hopeless interceptions stats (0.43 per 90 mins). Out-performed defensively by Mata, never-mind Lingard.

5 goals scored 5 big chances missed.

Those would be alarming numbers for a squad player at a top 6 team.

    Sign him up, Jose.

Not much of a hard worker, but he's big, powerful and direct.

Can play LW, RW, CAM, CM.

    Please make it happen.

Agree with you that he needs to improve the defensive side of his game but disagree about his attacking. The fairest United players to compare him too are Pogba and Fellaini and he has scored at a slightly better rate than Pogba (with less shots and better shooting accuracy) and considerably better than Fellaini. His passing accuracy is only 2-3% lower than those players and in return he creates more chances than Pogba and, again, far more than Fellaini. He is also a very good dribbler for a midfielder.

I'm not his biggest fan by any means and I wouldn't pay a premium for him but if his contract situation means he is available for a decent price I think he could be a good acquisition. He is an England international at a good age, settled in the NW of England and would be a significant upgrade on Fellaini.

I think Mourinho will go for his usual big 4 signings this summer. Why not Barkley? He's incredibly average but he would do well in a Mourinho take-no-chances-protect-the-draw-11.

He also smells of Swiss Cheese. Jose loves that in a player as the Swiss are a boring, neutral nation and he can see parralells in the football he likes to play

Stats are far from the be all and end all, but in terms of passing and creativeness, he's mixing it with the big boys.

I watch Barkley a lot, and the more I see him, the more I see him playing in a deeper role - a number 8 in a 3 man midfield.

His work rate would be a worry, but he has everything else, in my opinion.

Has a good passing range, long range shot, drives with the ball, can beat a man, strong, vision - the lot.

Decision making needs work. That will improve, though.

To me, he could become a Dembele/Yaya type of player for us. High praise indeed, but really has all the attributes, and with better players around him - no disrespect to Everton, he could be more effective, in my opinion.

Would be a pointless signing. His big strength are the runs he's able to make from deep which might have been great but we already have Pogba who's a lot better at that as well as being 10x the passer.

I highly doubt Barkey would be content being a backup up to Pogba.

Pogba's back-up will be lucky if he makes 15 PL starts in the next two seasons. It's a role for someone with incredible patience and modest ambition, that or capable of playing in a wide range of other roles. Spending money on bringing someone in to play such a role is a bizarre use of finite resources.

There's people on this forum who want us to sign Keane, Dier and Barkley. Boggles the mind.

I don't think there's any room for him at the likes of City or Spurs, but those are the kinds of clubs I could see him going to. I could also see him at Arsenal though. I don't think he fits into what we're looking for - he's not a pacy winger, he's not a striker, he's not a defensive midfielder. He's more of a number 10, and we already have those, and we're also linked with better players who can play there. I don't see him going to Chelsea as they don't really play a 10, although he could do a job as one of the two players behind the striker in Conte's preferred system. I think that would hinge on Willian or Hazard being sold though, and he wouldn't play every game with Pedro there too.

It's like they want us to be midtable.

Dier would be the best of the lot but surely we could get somebody like Matuidi, Matic or Fabinho with all the money we have.

Do you not think Pogba and Barkley in a midfield 3 would be a bit unbalanced?

Barkley to me seems like a really attack minded midfielder with low workrate so pairing him with Pogba would require Pogba to stay back more which would be a bit pointless considering he is more talented.

I really don't see the logic in that midfield

But he is incredibly average, why are we lowering standards? We need to improve the first team not bolster the bench

Signing a 23 year old CM with strength and pace who's good going forward make a lot of sense for us, but Barkley really isn't very good defensively.

I think he'd help us in the league, since Pogba and Barkley in front of Herrera with 3 attackers from Martial, Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Mata and presumably a signing of some kind is a solid amount of talent without anybody horribly out of position, but it wouldn't make me feel any more confident in the CL group stage (if we beat Ajax of course) and I could see Mourinho turning on him as a CM and using him more in the front 3, and I don't think he's better than the above attackers in that role.

If he could move cross town, I think Liverpool would make a lot of sense for him as the 3rd guy rotating with Winaldum and Lallana in their pressing system, but other than that, I'm not sure where he could go. Maybe Chelsea as the Cesc replacement, though they'd probably be better off with someone more reliably creative who could also sub for Kante and Matic, though that's tough to find in a backup.

This is a classic example of stats meaning feck all, looking at this and this alone and you'd say Alli is the worst of the lot.
I can't see how he would improve us, which is where the focus should be this summer, we have squaddies

I'm not really sure Ander is best suited to that deeper role, but to have Ander, Pogba and one other option + a deeper midfielder who can protect the back 4 and also spot a pass is probably what Jose will finalise in the summer. A true muppet signing would be Alli, but I wouldn't be disappointed if we got Barkley relatively cheap (Everton won't fleece anyone with a player who's contract is running out and doesn't want to be there). I think he does need a new challenge, he's been complacent for a while but has undeniable talent.

Also, the stats you posted are quite impressive. Could Pogba perhaps have the most passes per game by midfielders?
