As are Liverpool
If I remember correctly, weren't Liverpool basically really skint when Hodgson was manager and he was left with glaring holes in the squad in midfield and left fullback?
Yes he made some terrible signings but how many top 4 quality signings (that are ready to perform in less than 3 months, not in 3+ seasons) are made for £5million or less? It's bloody hard to find quality at that price so he went with who he knew and felt he could trust in Konchesky.
Still the same thing mate
Euro 2012: Roy Hodgson talks England tactics with Gary Lineker
Never saw this before the game. Good interview. Sometimes I dunno what to think about Roy. He says all the right things and seems to have the right tactical blueprint but the side he's picked...?
I think they'll be harder to break down but I still think the first decent team they play will beat them to a pulp.
They just dont keep the ball well enough to get away with it at the Euros.
I have defended Hodgson in this thread, I wish I hadn't bothered.
Any manager who is willing to not do everything in his power to get players like Carrick and Ferdinand playing while willing to settle on toss like Henderson and Martin Kelly can fecking do one.
He talks the talk but he doesn't walk it.
What a joke, calls up Martin Kelly to replace Cahill ffs
Is what rio has to say about this on twitter... Can imagine how pissed off he is
Its obvious that Woy is such good pals with Fergie that he's giving our English lads a nice summer vacation
How can Kelly get in ahead of Richards?
6 Liverpool players in the England squad
It's like Roy is trying to make up for being shite for them or something, I can think of no other possible explanation to have those players in the squad over players like Richards, rio, carrick. Ridiculous.
The silver lining to this cloud is that a) Martin Kelly seems to be a more tactically aware full back than Glen "I go walkies" Johnson and b) Rio will get more rest to come back fit and firing for us next year.
And this is what gets me. He's got the idea right but not the players to actually implement it. We fail not on what we want to do but on what we're capable of doing with the players available to us. It doesn't help that some players are injured but there are others who are surely more comfortable on the ball than some of those heading to Poland & Ukraine.
Martin fecking Kelly.Woy is such a fecking joke
It is almost as if he has no expectations for this tournament at all. Like he has taken a look through the squad and thought "What do we do well" and come out thinking "defending"
He has basically picked a side to not concede get through this tournament. Weather I am now trying to give him too much credit I don't know. Hopefully we get embarressed, not World Cup 2010 embarressed where we got through the groups. I mean P3 W0 D0 L3 GD - 9
And this is what someone has had to say about it on rawk:
Bizarre callup. If he wants to bring in a fullback to replace a CB it should be Richards not Kelly.
I don't blame Rio for being pissed off but if Roy Hodgson could only callup those who were on the standby list then I suppose there weren't many options.
It's a fecking disgrace [/drogba]
Yeah, Kelly's actually not at bad of a defender, it's just a joke that he is picked over rio and Richards.
Footballing reasons? My arse!!!
I think we need to apologize to Liverpool fans for giving Hodgson shit from day 1...the man is fecking clueless.
Who has to die for Micah Richards to get a call up? I disagree with the Rio decision, but he can cite squad harmony...and I'll understand.
But Micah Richards had to be in that squad right from the start...He played Phil fecking Jones at Right Back.
Mertens is a massive cnut. There is no logic to Roy's selections at all. Is Micah Richards a worse right back than Jones, Johnson and Kelly? I think Richards has played more at CB than Kelly has this year too.
What happened to a fresh start and a brave new world for the National team? Roy is taking us back to the dark ages of English football. It's very early days but he's making some mind boggling decisions that faili to inspire. I hope he's got a masterplan because for the first time in ages i'm deeply worried about our hopes in a tournament.
In Hodgson's defence; it's clear that he is trying to give young players who have a future at international tournaments a chance. Rio and Carrick are both the wrong side of thirty and don't really represent likely choices for the world cup squad in 2014. Richards is the kind of player that fans rate but managers are less crazy about. Even Mancini seemed to lose faith towards the end of the season. Perhaps it is due to his poor positional awareness or perhaps he doesn't carry out instructions.
Kelly's not in as a centre-back I don't think. Jones will be the 4th choice centre-back now.
Look at it from every possible angles, there is no way Kelly should be on that team but he strangely is.I've never seen anything promising about Martin Kelly
Rio was still understandable even if you disagree because, whatever the F.A. say, Rio's omission has nothing to do with football and everything to do with the Big Man and captain, leader, legend "JT". With the Big Man in the squad Roy would be risking a very obvious clash in the camp by picking Rio given that "JT" racially abused his brother.
With Richards...frankly I'd have picked him over Johnson. I don't understand Glen Johnson, that is, why he gets picked. I've seen nothing from him to convince me that Mourinho's assessment of him as not good enough back when he was at Chelsea is wrong. Defensively very suspect and given that Roy's teams are all about shape and organisation I'm shocked he feels Johnson can do the job. I can understand him being sceptical about Richards' discipline because Mancini dropped him for Zabaleta cos of his positioning and Capello did the same. But if you drop Richards for that reason how can you still pick Johnson who seems to think he's an auxiliary winger?
With so many average players in the squad i can see only one outcome....total embarassment!!
I have to agree and tbh I can't understand his strategy. Not only will he be open for criticism he will also piss off the United camp. A lose and lose situation. Hodgson will probably be the second national manager (the fifth or sixth if we include AVB, Grant, Scolari and Ancelotti) who lost either their job or their credibility because of the BIG MAN. Quite a record if you ask me.
I think he is picking players he has already worked with. This has all been a massive rush and he doesn't have time to start from square one with a load of new players. Kelly is a decent prospect, I'd say defensively no worse that Johnson so it's understandable. More importantly he will know what Hodgson expects from his defenders and how he fits into his systems.
Don't forget: Captain, leader, legend.
We're coming home, we're coming home, we're coming...England coming home.
I pray that this is the case.
Look at the picture of Rio
Last time he trusted a bunch of Merseyside players he lost his job, I can see something similar this time.
This one would have been a more accurate description of the way Ferdinand has been treated...

Does anyone know whose left on the 'call-up' list? I wondering if there are any more midfielders and who they might be.
Its amusing how Rio is being punished for Terry racially abusing Rio's brother, when it should be the other way around.
Jay Spearing & Jonjo Shelvey probably.
Its classic overcompensation, he must feel he didn't do right by the Liverpool players and is now giving them too much credit. I'm sure we're all familiar with that sort of behavior in ourselves.
He had to deal with seriously unrealistic expectations at Liverpool. That will be less of a problem with England.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me, part of the season I want to know is to see if they're on it!
It's incredible. Hodgson is an absolute joke.
Not looking forward to watching us in this tournament.
I really doubt that's what it is.
