Surely have to play together from now on?

Their understanding looks very promising. If Sanchez can get more out of Mata, we might see Mata 12/13 levels of performances.

They've been good, but at the same time, its Huddersfield. People got carried away with Shinji and Mata partnership once

And Mata and Herrera. We always get over excited when we see any semblence of an understanding between two footballers who play for us these days.

Every time they've been on the pitch together they've shown a great understanding. Need to build into that more.

It's normally ended with the last pass fizzling because Mata is so slow too

I like Mata but I don't think he's good enough to be as good as people want him to be. Useful squad player to have, always superb at retaining possesion, a great pro, good movement, but lacks physicality and mobility to be top class (for us at least).

Mata’s always going to link well with teammates because he’s an intelligent player.

Both have great movement off the ball, both have an eye for a pass. It’s not some sort of unquantifiable cosmic chemistry between them, it’s just the basic sum it’s parts.

The best thing is he has started to be creative from the right and gets involved a lot. Imagine Martial playing number 9 with Sanchez and Mata on either side.

Sanchez is too good not to start. He’s good enough to elevate the team.

Mata does things that the team can’t without him. The attack’s lack of patterns of play, imposing style and incisive play is well known. Mata’s passing and movement leads others to do things in the attack they just don’t regularly do without him. He makes the attack much more effective and cohesive. He’s a high quality bandage over serious structural problems in the staff and squad. Until those are fixed, you see the attack flutter in and out of matches and falter too quickly. He has to start when available.

Yeah I'd probably agree, but the question then is it better to have those qualities on the pitch at the same time? I think it makes sense. Which means Martial/Lingard/Pogba? have to try take the other spot.

I'm not sure a game against Huddersfield where we've barely strung two passes together in their half is one to get excited about our attacking play.

I agree but he was top class at Chelsea. Arguably the best player in the league for two years alongside RvP. Shame he's never really gotten back to those levels.

We have been a joke playingwise most of the time since he has been with us. Mata for me has been one of the few brigth sparks and he has my full respect for working his ass of for us in any position he has been asked to play (not all players of his status and footballing quality would have done that).

So, we're allowed to bitch and moan all we want but when it comes to being excited about a player or two, that's a big no-no? Great supporters, we are.

At the moment Lukaku, Mata and Sanchez have far better links with each others than Martial, Rashford and Lingard. We should play them together as much as possible now, till other players learn how to link with Sanchez.

Thought Sanchez and Lukaku linked up well too.

Mata links up well with most players but lack bit of pace because of which lot of moves break down. Mata with just bit more pace would have been brilliant.

I thought they were superb. Second goal was a sublime example of the counter attack and a killer pass from Sanchez. Telling that when they both came off our threat diminished. You have to be concerned when Mata, who is one of the slowest players I've ever seen - he looks like he's running in mud - is better at fast paced counter attacking than Martial and Lingard.

Exactly what I thought before the game. I haven't seen us counterattack this effectively in a while.

People assume counterattacking is all about pace, when clearly it's not. Mata, Lukaku and Sanchez countered more effectively than I've seen anything from Lingard, Rashford and Martial.

Good movement between the two but some very erratic passes also from the both of them, hopefully that will improve.

Looks quite good. A 4-2-3-1 in attack with Pogba left wing but it's 4-3-3 in defence with Pogba dropping deeper when we lose the ball.

Not seen today’s game yet as work Saturdays and I’m watching the boxing tonight but I think of the options we have that Mata is our best option on the right and if we play 4-3-3 it takes away defensive duties for Mata (and Sanchez) and allows him to concentrate on things up top.

From what I’ve read Sanchez didn’t offer much in terms of cover for Shaw which further adds to the need/desire for a 4-3-3 with whichever of Herrera, McTominay, Fellaini or Carrick offering support to Matic and allowing Pogba to do what he does safe in his knowledge he’s covered behind.

Ideally Mata would be a squad player but he is our best option on the right in big matches. He's the only player there who has a proven track record of production and his ability to hold and possess the ball in tight areas, even if he doesn't do anything exciting with it, is necessary for us right now.

I also believe we should be playing 4-3-3 but right now aside from McTominay, who he likely doesnt trust in big matches, we don't have the type of box to box player we need. Herrera even when healthy has been short of it this year. Fellaini being out means we are out another option as well.

He is but is a yard off the pace when a through ball is put through. He reminds me of a Dalgleish type' the first yard is in his head,' but these days the defenders are a lot quicker

He should be played behind Lukaku with Sanchez, Rashford/Martial either side. On the right his lack of pace is exposed, but it won’t be as bad as the Attacking Mid.

I think we always look better with Mata in the side, but I don’t think we can get there’s a way to line up and get the best out of him, Pogba, Sanchez and Martial

It’s a bit of a moot point to raise and I’m sure you could raise it over other players too, but if Mata had just that lick of acceleration over 5 or 10 yards he’d have been one phenomenal player. Has basically everything else you’d want in an attacker.

They do combine well together. In fact Mata is the only player in our squad who has been improved by adding Sanchez to the team. I would like to see them moved closer together with Sanchez as the #10 and let Martial get back to starting on the left.

That's quite lovely and fairly similar to the kind of positions some of these players occupied in one of our most coherent and dynamic performances of the season — at Goodison Park:
Pogba excelled as an auxiliary left attacking midfielder in possession who provided overloads at Juventus and could dovetail with Sánchez in a roving inside forward role as Mata tucks in to occupy the inside right channel as a floating attacking midfielder. And given the skill sets of the players, it's not just a static 4231 - but an in-game 433 or even diamond as well.

Mata is not as quick to play as Winger. But I'd like to see him play with Alexis on the right.
