A little over a week ago I was asked to write a Sci-Fi story for a small, independent publisher. Since then I have drawn up the plot, the characters and written the first three chapters.

TBH, Sci-Fi isn't a genre I know much about. I like Sci-Fi films and video games but have never really appreciated it in book form. So I would like any volunteer(s) who is/are familiar with the Sci-Fi genre to read the first two chapters of my book (6.5k words). Effectively just giving me an honest critique on the opening and whether they think it has potential. I'm not asking for anyone to edit the book.

My concern is that this publisher hasn't replied to me in a while, and I'm half starting to wonder if this is not going to happen after all. However, as I've already drafted the plot and written 10k words I may as well finish it regardless- IF it is any good. (If it's no good, I'll scrap it and write the fantasy book I've always wanted to!)

If you are interested, feel free to drop me a PM or reply here. I would appreciate it. Though I should add that the publisher's stipulation was for the book to be reasonably fast paced and have action and military scenes. So expect that from the opening two chapters.

No worries, I can happily send it your way if you don't mind PMing me your email address. Honestly, I'm a fantasy reader at heart so I have tried to avoid all the big Sci-Fi space battles etc anyway.

Um, don't think I have the requisite credentials or background of extensive Sci-Fi reading to critique your writing in an educated way, but I'd be glad to give it a read before bedtime today and tomorrow. :)

Can PM email address if you want me to...

Sure, any sort of help would be appreciated. I've had a few people look at it so far and their outside perspective has proven super useful.

Firstly; congrats on getting published! Even if they go cold on you getting as far as you have is an awesome achievement. I've only written a few shorts so far and not got published anywhere worth mentioning (though got a few stories about ready to send out, so hopefully that will change before too long) mainly due to constraints on free time and video games just being an easier thing to spend my time on.

I'd be happy to give it a read. I'm no reviewer or expert, but sci-fi is >50% of what I read so guess I have a bit of an idea, and it's basically all I write. Sci-fi is just fantasy, except it has to have some sort of grounding in reality, but it's such a broad term now that it's nearly meaningless at this point imo.

Probably won't get chance to look till the weekend though. If that's ok I'll PM you my email.

I will read it for you, my feedback may be more useful than others in here as I write Gothic Horror, Paranormal Fantasy, and Literary Fiction. I have lived in Wales, UK all my life. In recent years, I wrote history articles for a community magazine. My literary heroes and heroines range from Oscar Wilde to Steven J. Katriel

Two very strong applications and, after some deliberation, I've decided to employ both of you to do this, completely free of charge, job for me. Congratulations! If you could PM me your email addresses and bank account details, I'll send the document your way.

Honestly, it's only the first two chapters. There is another chapter (and a half now) that I've finished, and I'll likely have at least 6 chapters by the end of the week. But this is dependent on whether people feel the story is worth pursuing. Because sci-fi has never been my thing, a part of me doubts if its a genre I should be writing. Which, if that's the general consensus, is fine. I've had an idea for a fantasy book that I've been developing for a few years now anyway! Have to admit though, I am finding the limitless ideas and possibilities of a sci-fi novel makes it very fun to plan.

Hey Smashed, would be happy to do so. Like most of here though, I am more familiar with fantasy, but I have read most of famous sci-fi sagas (Dune, Hyperion, Asimov, Expanse, Ender, Star Wars and so on).

I am not sure how good a reviewer I can be, but I can try.

I'm not into sci fi. I like a few sci fi films (Blade Runner, Matrix, Close Encounters etc) but not the biggest fan.

I do however, know a fair bit about script writing so I'll have a read if you want. Granted I'm talking screenplays but many principles apply both ways.

    It was ok.

You lost me when the main character was 6'4 with the physique of a Greek God. Picked up a bit when the fleet of Alien ships arrived.
