Id be very surprised if true. Seems highly implausible. Smalling is likely our current most reliable defender maybe behind Bailly in quality and Lindelof in potential.

This said the wording is strong. Agreeing a deal is more than just an enquiry! I still think it's bull and why would only the express be running this.

Worthy of a thread as haven't seen much in the way of Smalling this summer.

    This has already been debunked.

What a shock it’s the Express running with it.

Sky Sports gossip column took it from the Daily Express' scanty recognition of the since debunked bullshit Reddit rumour. Modern day transfer rumours...

This was doing the rounds earlier. Has since been quashed by everyone and anyone worth listening to.

No I know mate, checked the link. I’m saying there’s no truth in it as reported by everyone credible including Simon Stone (BBC). It’s just no surprise that the Express are clueless and have run with internet garbage even after it’s been proven to be bullshit.

I saw some Twitter nonsense, but nothing actually in a paper and saying deal agreed is a big statement.

The link is probably bullshit but would people accept 50 million for him? I'm talking about the people that rate Smalling, not the people that want him gone this summer.

Absolutely crazy a paper can get away with this.

Saying a deal is agreed is verging on libel for misreporting that.

It would really depend on what we were doing with the £50m. My guess would be, nothing.

If you're going to start a transfer thread with capitals I'm the title it needs to be better than this

Yeah that's true. I would hope we would just pour it into a Alderweireld deal. What about you?

No because there are at least 2 other defenders who should be out the door before Smalling.

I assume you are talking about Rojo and Jones? I agree that they should be sold before Smalling, but 50 million is a lot of money.

Some fans we have, who want our best defender gone. Well, it won’t happen.

£50m would be banked in a flash! Albeit risky as still need a replacement, but Smalling is easily shown up if he doesn't have solid players around him. We need better, but arguably he isn't the first priority.

No idea who this Chris Smalling guy is, is he related to our centre back Mike?

You'd have to be an idiot to believe we'd sell our best CB.

Seriously though I find it daft how people would love him gone. See lots of dickheads on twitter depressed that this rumour turned out to be bullshit, why?!

Only if it is guaranteed to get Alder/Maguire, but even then it makes no sense to sell him considering that we have money to get another CB without selling him, and he is miles better and reliable than Jones/Rojo, so if we need money to finance another CB signing it should be them who needs to be sold, not Smalling.

The only way it makes sense to sell him is if we're planning a total revamp of defense and we sign 2 CBs, selling him, Jones and Rojo. But that isn't happening so I call these rumours bullshit.

I also don't think that any club will offer 50m for him. Probably not even 40m.

A revamp makes me excited at the prospect.

    Out:
    Jones £30-40m
    Rojo £30m
    Smalling £40-50m
    Darmian £15m
    Net. C.£120m

    In:
    Alderweireld £50m
    Maguire £60m
    Mina £30m
    Net. £140m

    Net spend c.£20m

    This would be fine work!
