Nodody's moaning, we are just discussing why the day is not universally accepted, even in England.
Because he had fuck all to do with England. It's an order of chivalry for the Anglo-Norman-German crown.
Maybe ye need a new holiday to celebrate England. Any ideas for a theme?
Bangers and Mash Day
Guy Fawlks day... Oh wait!
Waterloo? Trafalgar? Errrm...... Australia Day? Maybe the 4th of July is good, thank God we got rid of that lot!
Scottie Parker Day.
Not a bad shout and would do your international PR no harm.
Unlike that welsh bloke you celebrate whilst drinking guinness and wearing stupid hats
It's a recent thing this no-one giving a shit, back when I was a kid we had street parties in Manchester
Aye. I believe that. There has been loads of navel gazing in the British media since then. Like loads. I think the problem with this festival are homegrown.
We could do with a bank holiday in Autumn to break up that part of the year, November 11 would be good idea.
Far too many BH's around this time of year then you get to August & nothing for 4 months.
Ever the pragmatist Col, but we need a theme?
A new, non divisive one.
There is a bank holiday at the end of October
Not in England. They don't have as many bank holidays as we do.
Just imagine if we had given them representation in parliament, and god forbid incorporated them through an Act of Union?
oh you know I would if I had the time!
Would that be divisive then?
Wars are best avoided if unity is what is required. The aul wars tend to be based on some degree of opposition?
I don't see what's so bad about not overly celebrating a religious celebration honouring a semi-fictional Syrian Roman soldier who didn't slay a dragon and is also the patron saint of Georgia, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia.
Big whoop. I'm more proud of England for not over doing it. Silly thing.
World Wars, Falklands, Afganistan etc, all in it together surely?
What? The more wars the less opposition? Are you doing this on purpose? That's the most unifying theme you can think of, war?
Right, this is progress. What we need is a new patron saint for you lot.
Who is the bestest Englisher ever?
David Beckham day.
... but not of war? Great, what?
Not bad in fairness. Even his detractors are more dismissive than enraged?
No, of those who lost their lives, thousands struck down in the flower of their youth.
Are you being deliberately argumentative?
What are you trying to prove?
Considering yours is so widely celebrated as little more than an elaborate excuse to get pissed, if we have to have a day celebrating the place we happened to be born (small time mentality) then we might as well be up front about our intentions from the off.
Ollie Reed day.
Argumentative? In saying war is the least unifying theme for a holiday? Have you never read a paper that isn't The Telegraph or The Mail?
Do you really not see how war dead isn't divisive?
Have you really never seen the poppy discussed in this context?
I'm not trying to prove anything, what I'm saying is so ungroundbreaking it's amazing you fail to see it.
That naked wrestling scene is a hard sell to certain blokes?
Issac Newton, oh fuck, it's Christmas Day already, or not!
There's nothing more manly than naked man wrestling.
The Welsh could have a Richard Burton day, and you should change yours to Richard Harris Day, since St Patrick was actually English.
We could then have an additional Peter O Toole day which we shared. Like a sort of tentative bonding occasion.
Colin, where do you stand on naked male wrestling?
St Patrick may have been a Welsh slave or a French Bishop. Or many other things in between. Dicky Harris is out, he played Cromwell in a film that didn't depict him as the divil. We're happy with the dubious identity of St Paddy for now, it's harder to find fault with someone so enigmatic.
So basically you're saying fuck 'em?
If it wasn't for those who went to war against Hitler, you wouldn't be sitting in your fishing boat of a weekend smoking dope now would you?
The millions who were slaughtered in the Great War, well fuck them too, serves them right, they shouldn't have gone should they? Well maybe they shouldn't, but it's no reason to ignore the terrible experiences they went through for basically nothing.
Its not a celebration, its a remembrance, its a decent enough excuse for a day off.
Again, what point are you trying to make here, or are you just trying to wind me up? Well you've done that, now move on...
Too many cross community days out for you Phil.
In the middle.
Shane MacGowan day?
St Patrick is also the patron saint of Nigeria. I like to imagine him as a scam artist traffic warden.
But that's racist.
Mose, you broke Colin.
