Between consenting adults, why not?
Would they be greased up?
You are a cartoon aren't you?
How did you get from 'I think it's divisive' to 'fuck the dead'?
Have you seriously never heard any Poppy Day debate?
If you have then that's all I'm referring to. War in any shape is not an inclusive subject, as proven by our exchange.
Not as an acceptable niche, but to define your country?
I tend to find that those English people who refuse to class themselves as British as well as English are somewhat anti Scottish/Welsh/N.Irish.
The English don't exist.
So what do you lot do today then? I'm assuming it involves dragons and reciting speeches, but so far that is my very basic first impression. Is it similar to st paddys day or is it something different altogether?
I've never really thought about it. Like, ever. I say I'm English if someone asks, but if someone introduces or refers to me as British I don't think about it one way or the other.
The only people who seem to actually give any consideration to the British/Country thing are the overly patriotic right wing or the Scots/Welsh/N.Irish. On the whole, I don't think the English care.
Read the thread. They do stuff like this ...
It basically involves complaining that 'England is no longer England', inventing stories about how the PC political left and immigrants are in cahoots to suppress Englishness, and suggesting ways to rectify the decline in English national identity, such as changing the national anthem to one named after the capital of Israel.
It's all very charming.
At first glance I read that as 'We are alone'.
I find it a bit sad I didn't even know it was St. Georges Day today til I saw this thread.
That's just it. Most of the English don't care, but when an English person goes out of his or her way to make a point about being English and not British, there tends to be some anti Scottish/Welsh/N.Irish/Irish sentiment behind it. At least, that's what I've found.
I'd agree. They also tend to be the kind of people who make a fuss about us not celebrating St George's Day enough.
Also, I would support Jerusalem more as a national anthem than a ditty to a deity and a hereditary monarch.
Jerusalem is a fantastic poem/song. And yes, anything would be better than the pathetically subservient GSTQ.
Jerusalem is about a deity though and the working conditions up north.
Anyway, St. Georges Day.
It would be better if you didn't exist
tbh, I didn't know it was today either...
Why do you have to do anything?
I guess we could all wear silly hats for the day but there's already a day for that
Did they run out of hats last St Paddy's Day, Stanley? Is that what this is about?
Yes. Running out of hats is exactly what St Paddy's Day is about.
Judging by this thread it appears to be a day of arguing over nationality. I think Stanleys a wee bit upset that we show them up in a much more spectacular fashion all year round in that regard. That and the lack of hats, obviously. What sort of a day hasn't got designated hats? not one I want anything to do with anyway..
I googled St George's day hats and came up with these happy looking english gentlemen. These look like great chaps
I think Stan makes this thread every year, with the same results, the english not able to agree except on what the day is or should be.
Makes me proud.
You can keep your superstitious hat wearing binge day.
I want your one, we could do with some fucking self analyis.
Plus we also get yours. Best of both worlds. And hats.
I've actually got a comedy foam England hat. I got it at one of the Euros. We could have a hat trading ceremony on Peter O Toole day, as a sign of friendship and bridge building.
Solving the world's problems, with hats.
The same results?
Oh you mean wannabee English talking about naked men wrestling?
It's that inclusive warmth that makes ye so popular around the world.
Yes, upset, i'm very upset
If the English can't agree on what it's about then what hope would we have though. Their self analysis is a discussion over a pint, ours would be riots probably.
Reading up about the day surprised me a bit. I thought it was a much bigger deal than it appears to be. Didn't know about cathedrals playing Jurusalem or anything like that either.
Edit- Well not exactly 'playing' you understand. I don't think the beatles used to do cathedral tours at this time or anything.
Well our threads on St Georges are popular with the Irish
The English cant agree??
Who said that The Irish?
It's an Irish forum, and we are a very chatty bunch.
Nothing tops the inclusive warmth of a naken man wrestle.
Thats for sure
You also got upset very early in the thread
Very touchy The Irish
Stan is obsessed with the Irish. Like my scouse mate who almost exlcusively talks about United. Yeah it's mostly having a pop, but I think he just has problems expressing himself emotionally.
It's the generations of getting drunk, plays havoc with the nerves.
So is this how you celebrate the day at home? Talking about Ireland?
Yeah i'm obsessed
I spent allday getting upset in your Paddys day thread
And i dont think i've spoken about the irish, unless you include weaste and his hat
It's not warm initially. At least not in the west of Ireland.
For a man who likes to take people up on typos poor aul Stanley can't type for shit.
Either that or he's semi-literate.
I remember calling into question the irishness of Pogue the Englisman
The caf has a history of people pretending to be irish, tou're one aren't you
I've left a spelling mistake for you to correct
Thanks in advance
