Agreed. They desperately need to liberate themselves from all the current characters (or at least most of them) and move on to something new. That's where the magic could really happen.

Was confirmed by Kathleen Kennedy that the trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker saga.

Another bit of cool info is in 2019 when Disney starts it's new streaming services it will debut a new Star Wars live action tv series. Similar to the Marvel ones on Netflix (which in 2019 will be on the new streaming platform).

Blank canvas? Sounds good. No need for the films to tie themselves to one set of characters or one extended storyline all the time.

Please go back a few millennia in time and tell us totally new stories. This is what I want from Star Wars.

I think Disney have realised that Star Wars is pretty restricted if you hover around the same timeline as the originals. Everyone just wants to see lightsabers, tie fighters and Darth Vader, and every new character has to somehow be related to a character we already know. It's limiting when the fans expect all this stuff, and then when you give it to them it's labelled fan service anyway. I hope they're just going to go back/forward a few hundred years and just get away from all of that in order to do something creative and new. It's about time after two safe films.

Hopefully a positive sign of how good The Last Jedi is, that they are giving Johnson a whole new trilogy to work with.

Probably always the plan to expand the universe away from the Skywalker era but I suppose it has been brought forward with Carrie Fisher's death.

They must be pretty happy with The Last Jedi to give him an entire trilogy. Just over a month until it’s released.

There’s so much brilliant content in the Old Republic. Revan, Malak, the Exile, the Jedi civil war, the sith emperor. If they choose to go this direction it could be amazing.

They were both riding on past glories. This new trilogy at least gives them chance to get away from that.

Rogue One was a very different film to the rest though and was hardly safe. It got a lot of criticism for being too much like a War Film and not being Star Warsy enough. This conversation is probably best kept to the Star Wars thread anyway rather than clogging this thread up.

Either way, as others have said this could have potential. I'm kind of hoping they stay away from the mass Jedi stuff and go for something else.

In fairness to Disney, they do with their animated stuff.

I'll be honest, I'm more interested in the live action tv show then the new films. That has potential to be much more fun and interesting.

I understand people saying move away from the current character set but if you do that it's star wars only by name. Jedi's, the Force, and the Dark Side are integral to the whole thing. Without those three things, it's not Star Wars.

It needs to either be heavily cut, or to be a TV series. A trilogy won't suffice to tell the entire story of KOTOR/TOR.

Yeah, a Star Wars trilogy without Jedis/Sith/the Force is the least thing I want.

Going back in time and telling new stories is what they should do, but the Star Warsy elements must remain

But surely you could still have those three things, just different characters in a different era.

IIRC Yoda is hundreds of years old, Jedi are an ancient order so there is plenty of scope to tell stories that can take place hundreds of years ago without the need to tie up with the existing trilogies.

Yea, you're right. But the plot of star wars is that the dark side is eventually defeated by the Force, right? I guess they could come up with a similar plot, but I think the timelines need to be connected. Im probably wrong though.

That's just nonsense @Green_Red, there wasn't a Skywalker in sight for KOTOR and it's still one of the best loved games in history because of it's brilliant Star Wars story.

The force, Jedi's and the Dark side "existed" long before Episode IV. KOTOR was set a few thousand years before Anakin Skywalker.

Didn't like the last two movies at all. Suffered through the first, but turned of the second after 20 minutes.

Do not have high hopes for this.

A non-animated Old Republic-era TV series would be great.

Some time soon I have a feeling they will re-do ep1,2 and 3 and that is based on absolutely nothing.
Maybe it just me wanting the story of Darth Vader being told in a better way. Dunno.

Anyway, for the new trilogy, it does need to keep some elements of Stars Wars, but in a different time period and different characters is the way to go.
Or even if its in the same time period but light years away where none of the Skywalker stuff is even registering or matters cos whats out there in the sky is big.

Can they go back to some experimental cinematography like Lucas did with New Hope ?

Don't care if it's gonna be weird, just be original for once.

Well of course not. I'm thinking more in the Memento/Prestige/Inception/Interstellar mindfeck range.

Nah, we don't need a bleak psychoanalysis of a broken Jedi. I'd rather the Coens did a space - Lebowski.
