This is the team in the lower leagues which I follow. They have had a pretty torrid time over the last couple of years, having overstretched themselves financially to gain promotion to League 1, and their relegation from the football league has finally been confirmed today with the 2-0 defeat to Crewe, although it has been on the cards for some time now.

I started taking an interest in the late 70's because they were the nearest team to where we lived and my brother & I used to chortle at them languishing in the old Division 4. I used to go and watch them from time to time with my brother because you could actually get a ticket. I even went to see their playoff final at Wembley a few years ago, an excuse to see Wembley tbh, but they won so it was all good.

I seem to remember they beat United in an FA Cup draw in the 70's, feck knows how they managed that, bastards...

They seem to have been in the football league for ever, so its a bit of a shame.

106 consecutive years they have been in the Football League.

I also 'follow' Stockport as I have a good friend who is a fan so have kept an eye out for their results over the the past few years. Gutted for them but it's been on the cards since they got promoted really. Their owner is a wanker and financially they have shot themselves in the foot.

FWIW, I also follow the results of Sheffield United and Plymouth for various reasons and they both got fecked this year.

In recent years several 'new' clubs, or clubs that have recently turned professional, have made their way into the football league and several big names have gone the other way - almost all with one thing in common - financial problems. Clubs like Cambridge and York have been stuck in the Conference for years, and more recently clubs like Mansfield, Wrexham and Darlington. Halifax Town have dropped right down the divisions and had to reform. Historically non-league clubs like Yeovil, Stevenage, Dag & Red, Morecambe are establishing themselves in the Football League - there's only space for so many!

It's a real test for a club to see if they can survive and come back up. My local team did and are now on course for their highest ever position in the football league following two promotions. Plus they're now owned by the fans and have one of the lowest operating budgets in the football league. It can be done!

sad to hear - I watched em sometimes when I was at school in Cheadle and bought my first house in Edgeley

I remember when they had the midget winger Johnny Price. He was picked as THE sub, when they were new to the game. He obviously thought it was the same as being a reserve because when they decided to bring him on, he was nowhere to be seen. They never thought of looking in the nearby Windsor Castle where he was enjoying a pint and a fag :D

I do, I just didn't see this thread until now.

Not that I'm from Stockport, have any deep feelings for Stockport County FC or even know anyone from Stockport supporting them (they're all blue -- living the stereotype! :D), but I've always admired the fact that they've been able to keep on keeping on -- and with decent support at that -- with United and City on their doorstep. I salute all the loyal SCFC supporters, who could easily claim either us or the Berties as their local team.

shame to see their demise - i grew up in the area so always look out for their results - went to a couple of matches back in the day, Kevin Francis was the star player - the black Peter Crouch !

Also the Great George Best played for them in 1975 which was some capture in those days!

It would appear that they do.

As it is not a Porsche or United, nobody expected you to though, although you care enough to keep checking back. ;)

A fair few County supporters I know said if anything they'll start following City, mainly due to the whole trendy United hating thing.

Jim Gannon appointed Stockport County director of football

Interesting stuff, its been a desperate season for Stockport, now in the relegation zone of the BSB league, I hope Gannon can turn things round...

STOCKPORT MANAGERS SINCE GANNON'S FIRST SPELL
    Gary Ablett (July 2009-June 2010)
    Paul Simpson (July 2010-January 2011)
    Peter Ward (January-March 2011)
    Ray Mathias (March-July 2011)
    Dietmar Hamann (July-November 2011)

I remember that one. Summerbee was playing for them and late in the game whilst they were winning, the cocky fecker just sat on the ball during play with a stupid smirk on his face. There were far more County fans than they normally get at home and they went wild cheering. A few minutes later they were losing 3-2

    Things are looking pretty grim.

Looks fairly likely that Stockport will be relegated from the Conference.

I still can't believe that it was only 5 years ago that I was at Wembley for the playoff final for promotion to League 1.

13 years ago they were challenging for the play offs in Division 1. They had a good side around that time.

Crikey! I went to see them play at Bury once in a Third Division game. Bury were chasing promotion and beat Stockport 5-3 after losing to them away just a few days earlier (Easter fixtures of old). It was a heck of a good game with some excellent football played by both sides. Bury had some nifty players in those days.

Stockport will be in the same league as my local side workington next season. It's great football. Also FC United may be joining from the league below as well.

Used to go and watch them when I was younger, shame how they have fallen so far down.
Slightly useless information but Iv scored 2 goals at Edgeley Park as well, we lost the game 7-3 but I'll always remember those goals!
