Seems a real shortage at the moment, and not many options that don’t also come with certain reservations.

Many, particularly myself, have been critical of Lukaku, and I’d love a better striker here, but don’t see many better on the market anyway. I have maintained that I think we got the best available on the market at the time.

It seems a dry spell at centre forward. I think everyone wants to play either side now, and not do the dirty work of a true 9. The 9s now are the lesser talented forwards. Many top teams seem to have a high supply of goals from the 7 or 11.

Anyone out there? If we had to buy a striker to start in the summer, who would you realistically target? I think Rodrigo is interesting personally, but question marks here too.

I'd like to have wide players like Ronaldo/Messi/Salah scorer type, 20-30+ goal league season, we don't get that since Ronaldo's departure.

Choupo-Moting is allegedly going to PSG. We seriously missed a trick there.

Werner, Rodrigo, Immobile, Icardi, Vardy, Kramaric and Maxi Gomez are all probably obtainable for big clubs.

Icardi would cost a hell of a lot and is the only one who is really top class and at the right age. Werner will probably end up at Bayern as a long term replacement for Lewandowski.

For that Bayern would have to have another playing system. Opponents sit deep against Bayern - the striker does not have to have "speed" as his most significant strength...

They are very different players but part of me just feels that it is impossible for there to be a really talented young German player who Bayern won't sign at some point.

My theory is that when you look at a lot of the top strikers they were playing on the wings early in their career either fulltime or sporadically (Lewandowski, Suarez, Aubameyang,Cavani, Lacazette, etc. SO many of the next great strikers might be wingers right now.

Lozano is a winger. A relatively traditional winger.

Icardi almost certainly, but would cost a bomb.
Belotti if he can stay fit and repeat his previous form.
Maximiliano Gomez looks an interesting prospect as well.

Arkadiusz Milik looked a real prospect but two cruciates later I’m not sure what’s left of him now.

I think Rodrigo has now reached a point in his career where he could take the next step and become a top centre forward. He has always had a lot of ingredients but I’m not sure he’s prolific enough. That said, I’ve seen enough to suspect he could have a monster season round about now and kick on.

I though Luis Muriel was going to be a top centre forward too tbh but he lost his way.

    Moussa Dembele of Celtic.

Icardi for sure but he may as well be considered as being in one of Europe’s top clubs already.

We should probably keep that buy-back clause on Memphis in the draw just in case. Long thought he’d end up central, and probably best suited there then wide I think.

It's harder to make an impact from out wide generally, I think, so I agree. You also left out Mertens and it seems like maybe Arnautovic might join the list if he kicks on.

Richarlison is an interesting possibility. He obviously knows how to find space in the box to get on the edge of crosses and has a bit more size than most wingers.

I haven't seen enough of him but Ismaila Sarr is a highly rated youngster and looked a bit stronger than most wingers.

Maybe Traore at Lyon? His finishing can be haphazard but he seems to make clever runs and isn't too small.

Neres at Ajax? Again I haven't seen enough to confident.

He's not a winger, but I always thought Ross Barkley would make an interesting 9 since he can leather the ball with both feet, moves well, has decent strength and seems a bit clueless as a CM but has a bit of that goalscorer's mentality a striker needs (and I think many English midfielders seem to, they just struggle at the more nuanced stuff deeper).

Werner and Icardi seem to be the obvious candidates, Immobile scores truckloads of goals, but he seems to get home-sick easily.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoffenheim's Kramaric do well at a top club, he's quite a complete player. Given that he's "already" 27 he probably won't be anyone first choice though.

Leipzig's Augustin is immensly talented and rapid as well, he's a bit of consistency away from being a top striker.

There really is a lack of quality young #9's around. Apparently Werner is a good talent but he was dogshit in the World Cup. Hasn't also really kicked on after 16/17 when he scored 21 BL goals, but I guess he's got time on his side.
I thought Bakambu was promising at Villarreal but the dude went to China afterwards.

    M. Dembele?
    Lautaro Martinez?
    Florin Andone?
    How's Belotti doing lately?
    Andre Silva?
    Munir?
    Andrea Petagna?

I agree that he tends to be overhyped, but Germany at this WC should not be the measuring stick. The whole team sucked ass.

Disagree with Werner, agree with Lozano in terms of making it to the top tier. Can’t believe neither of them had much interest over this transfer window. I’d love Lozano here.

Lewandowski is perhaps the best striker-striker in the world next to Ronaldo, he knows where the goal is, at all times. All angles and openings.

Belotti was the one for me. Wanted him instead of Lukaku.
