Jaysus, I'd rather Mancini played Balotelli over Tevez. Balotelli is a headcase and could easily get sent off. I'm scared of the movement of Aguero & Tevez and the problems they could cause Rio & Evans. Saying that, Mancini might decide to go 4-5-1.

Ballotelli wont play again for City, its obvious he was half the problem for their bad form, him being suspended and Tevez coming back might have won them the title.

That said, what SAF will ACTUALLY do it anyone's guess. Will surely do something a bit off the wall to keep us all on our toes. Rooney in midfield instead of Cleverley and Welbeck up top maybe.

If City play a high pressing game I fear for us. Thankfully I don't see Mancini playing them tactics.

    This is very true.

    We'll probably see something like:

    ----------------DeGea---------------
    Valencia-----Ferdi-----Evans-----Evra
    ------Park-----Jones-----Giggs------
    --Rafael-----------------Rooney-----
    --------------Hernandez-------------

    -------P-------R------A-------Y------

As deep as Rooney drops, playing 2 upfront against City at the Etihad isnt something i'd go for Art. We'l need to deal with Toure Barry and maybe even Milner in the middle, better play 3 there ourselves.

There are so many factors to consider but I think SAF will get it right. This is where it counts most. I suspect we might see:

    ---------------------DDG--------------------
    Smalling-------Rio-----------Evans-------Evra
    ---------------Carrick-----Scholes-----------
    ------------------Giggs----------------------
    Valencia---------Rooney--------------Welbeck

    Subs: (Outfield)

    Jones
    Rafael
    Cleverley
    Young
    Nani
    Hernandez

-Valencia over Nani and Young because SAF likes workhorses in games like these and he trusts Tony a lot.
-Giggs in because of experience and he'd be able to interchange with Welbeck to provide natural width or play through the middle. He'd be vital on the counter
-Rooney and Welbs to also interchange with Rooney dropping deeper at times
-Clevs seems an attractive choice but I doubt SAF will entrust him with our biggest game of the season considering he hasn't played much. Though you never know
-Rooney dropping deep and Giggs not starting is an option but not sure if we will go this way as Rooney is ok as mid and that's about it.
-Smalling or Jones will start at RB. We'll need the extra height. I favour Smalling because of his defensive discipline and he's not exactly a mug when it comes to attacking down the wing. Rafael, whilst having been brilliant for us, will probably miss out as we need all the height we can muster and we need all our defenders to be positionally aware on the day...Evra...:wenger:

Either way, we have options and SAF has a week to get it right.

Fielding both Giggs and Scholes would be way too dangerous. Wouldn't mind having Rafael at right-back despite his stinker yesterday, after all City does not have a left winger that dangerous and Rafael once dealt with Robinho brilliantly

I'd go with DDG - Rafael, Rio, Evans, Evra - Carrick, Scholes, Park, Valencia, Nani - Rooney

Park or Jones in the center, we need 3 CMs to deal with Silva & Yaya

Be nice if we could bring someone like Park or Fletcher into midfield just to a make big fecking nuisance of himself, running around breaking up play and winning the ball back in City's half.

Anyone know if either of them are fit?

Park is fit but not match fit.

If he was match fit then there'd be no 'doot abootit for me, Park would start. But...

I'm not sure if we should start Giggs or not in this one. He has been in poor form recently, but you know Giggs always comes alive in big games. Plus he could be the one to unlock their midfield by running through the middle.

It's a shame Cleverley isn't fully fit, I think a midfield 3 with him, Scholes and Carrick would be perfect. I really don't think we can go 4-4-2 here.

Play the 4-1-4-1 formation to protect and counter attack.
    .............................De Gea
    Smalling.........Evans...............Rio............Evra
    ..............................Carrick
    Valencia..........Jones...........Cleverly.........Nani
    ..............................Rooney

Carrick to be holding midfield player. Jones and Cleverly to track and harrass
their midfield creators. Nani and Valencia to pin down their full backs and shoot at sight. United must put in extra effort in disrupting their midfield play.
If United were to go into a comfortable lead e.g. 2-0,
Change the formation to 1-4-4-1 to protect the lead. Use Rio as sweeper,
Jones to drop back, Fabio to be more defensive and Evra to move up.
It is the inability to change the the formation to protect the lead that caused United to give away 2 goals in the last few minutes against Everton.
If only Carlos Queiros is around, that will not happen.

    ..................................De Gea
    ..................................Rio
    Jones.............Smalling.........Evans...........Fabio
    ..................Carrick............Cleverly
    .......Valencia......................................Evra
    ..................................Rooney

Same here, I'm pretty sure we need Scholes and 2 work horses to cover for him, Carrick and someone who doesn't give the ball away much... I mean Clevs is fine if fit but it'd be a lot to ask, would love Fletcher but sadly he's away... Park ? Not for me, he's touch ain't good enough for CM and doesn't have composure, Ando won't play again and as much as I love Phil Jones, I don't want to see him against a top opposition yet... This is going to be a real tough one... Clevs would probably get the nodge but I see SAF deploying Jones - Carrick to cover Scholes and I'm sure he won't take off an on form Nani and he'll suprise us by playing Young on the left ( Tony V will get rested to kill off Swansea and Sunderland )

    DDG
    Smalling
    Rio
    Evans
    Evra

    Valencia
    Scholes
    Carrick

    Welbeck
    Rooney

For me those names are nailed on to start, unless Fergie feels Smalling hasn't had enough match practice. But after that horror show yesterday, plus his famed lack of concentration, Rafael can't start this game. Smalling offers height and more solidarity defensively for me.

I think Welbeck and Rooney will play on the left, interchanging, a bit like how they did against Blackburn. Welbeck's work rate could prove very useful here. Plus those have linked up well in the last two games.

The extra midfielder could depend on fitness. Giggs' performances from the start have mostly been disappointing in my memory. Newcastle away and Wigan away really stick out in my mind. I recall him starting out wide against Norwich, a game he eventually got the winner in.

I wonder if we'll play 4-5-1 when defending, with Giggs coming inside, and Welbeck dropping out wide, and 4-4-2 on the attack, with Giggs offering width, and Welbeck joining Rooney.

Of course after his performance yesterday it'll probably be hard to leave Nani out, but Giggs' versatility may earn him a starting place.

No way will he not play either Valencia or Nani. They thrive in a 4-3-3.

For me it's only a question of who's at RB.Does he trust Rafael or go with the physique and speed of Smalling?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Rooney dropping deep to play in a midfield 3 with Carrick and Scholes.Valencia/Nani and Welbeck up top

Its 6 weeks since Smalling last started a game for us and 3 months since he last played at right back. Seems madness to throw him in for the biggest game of the season.

SAF has surprised us before. If he's on the bench he's ready but I agree Rafael has the greater experience right now.I just feel that Aguero or Tevez would have the measure of him.

They have more options now than that game.Aguerro likes to come in from the right and interchanges with Nasri well.

But I did enjoy that moment

I'm more concerned about the other side tbh...Evra is a fecking liability...Valencias also a bit more consistent in his tracking back than Nani (Although Nani is improving a lot in that respect)

But when he has a bad one he can really affect the whole team. I'd be happy with Scholes as the old hand with Carrick and Rooney if Fergie went for one up front (Welb). Bring Giggs on in the second half when the flow has been established and the City midfielders have lost some of their legs for me.

Yeah, to be honest seeing Giggs starting scares me a bit this season. He has been wasteful moreoften than not, and this a game that we're going to desperately need not to make many mistakes.

If Park starts than I shall sigh, shake my head and turn off the television before kickoff.

I also don't see us setting up to counter-attack in this one. For all of their annoying, 'look at my Sheik's money sensibilities, this City team is a very slow, controlled, possession dominating side. And we are not particularly strong defensively. If we just cede possession to them they will score, multiple times. As we've seen when we've played them this season. We've looked much better when trying to play on the front foot, which is what we'll need to do. I'm almost positive Fergie is going to pull Rooney back into midfield and start Welbeck up top.

My biggest worry is that neither of our full backs look capable of tracking great movement (Rafael letting Pienaar walk on by...f*ck sake) and City are all about great movement in the front.

If I was Mancini I'd start with their 'rigid' lineup - Aguero, Tevez and Silva up front, and Barry, De Jong and Toure in the middle. They can then wait for us to tire a bit before bringing on some attacking flair in Johnson, Nasri or Balotelli.
