The kid playing a cameo for an injury ravaged and knackered Man Utd team who had been under pressure from one of the most expensively assembled squads in world football for the whole game, looked out of his depth....thank god you're not a scout.

Thought I'd take a look at people's opinions of his performance last night. It was a mixed bag but I love his attitude and thought he did ok.
Did not expect to come on here and find that he has been written off at this level. Bloody hell.

Came on for 15 minutes in the Champions League against PSG and yet this is called a career changing performance? Perreira had a horrible game 2 weeks (iirc) and he's bounced back just fine. People call for youth players and expect them to be world class the moment they step on the pitch, otherwise they should never wear the shirt again. Get real!

This post has to be a joke. It just has to be.

It was fifteen minutes, the ball only came to him a few times in that period. There's no way you honestly believe that it was career changing, nobody could possibly be that kneejerk.

As someone said before, he was not hiding or shying away from anything in such a pressure cooker of a time. Sure he made bad decisions but thats why they're kids. If they were ready made in the first place then there's no point in developing young players is there?

I think Chong was put on to help us press and get the ball back so we could put in a few attacks and drive forward with pace. Psg had put on some more midfielders and were looking to stifle out the game in the end. I don't think greenwood would have offered that kind of energy that Chong was giving out. Its probably why some posters saw him as a headless chicken. He was just trying to follow instructions I think.

Did you post the wrong clip?

If it hadn't been for De Gea's brain fart of a punch it would have been Chong winning first prize for the guy who almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Nerves got the better of him. Its very difficult to judge players this early but so far I haven't seen anything to suggest that he'll make it here.

... are we collectively missing something? I would genuinely love to know what was so noteworthy about his performance from this clip?

I think it’s that he turns to question teammates instead of pressing where the ball just went.

Edit: he looks close to Verratti I think it is on the tele, in real life he was probably 10 yards away and turning around made no difference

Not impressed so far, but it's still early days. Playing a few minutes in this game should do wonders for his confidence.

It was a dodgy pass that fell to their player near the half way line, was hardly like he hit his own post and had it cleared off the line.

I'm going to keep saying it until this nonsense dies down: he didn't show anything. That he can make it, that he can't make it, that he is good, that he isn't good. He played a handful of minutes in the total chaos of the end of this game. His only purpose was to have the legs to run around after the ball, which he did, so it wasn't a mistake to bring him on. But he didn't excel or impress or disappoint or crash and burn... it's a meaningless cameo from him. Nice for him to get a taste of the atmosphere and the game but useless in terms of analysing him.

He gives up on pressing a player Verratti as he's regaining possession in a dangerous transition part of the pitch. Verratti literally could have strolled past into the space (as he's known to) or picked a dangerous pass forward (which he kinda did even if it didn't pan out) because Chong just randomly decided to look back instead of continuing his run. Also 10 yards away? it's like 2 at best and would have been even less if he hadn't turned around. Just seemed a massive brainfart that could have ended so much worse

Some of you are fecking idiots, what do some of you lot expect from the lad on a game where we're largely pinned back, he was brought on to provide some energy. I think he'll be just fine.

Not just base on this game , But to me He looks like those overrated pace merchant without much footballing brain that come and go in any club from time to time , He dribbles here and there which always end up in losing possession or misplace pass. Maybe dribbling in high pace looks cool for you but what's the point if there is no end product ? What's the point when it ends up in losing possession ? Once he went for dribbling , He doesn't know how to slow down, how to shield the ball and keep possession . Early days of course , there is time for him to learn how to play football but so far from what i see , he doesn't look much different from amateur footballer.

A lot of people in this thread proving why sometimes it’s not a win/win situation to throw the kids on. I mean feck me, he’s barely played at all for the first team and you’re asking him to come on, out of position and effect a game where we’ve barely threatened.

He had one run through the middle with a heavy touch and lost the ball. That’s really the only time I can remember him doing anything wrong before the penalty. Once the penalty is scored then it’s clearly a disadvantage to have him on the pitch. There’s a reason why coaches like Jose don’t trust young players. Can you imagine the pressure he’s under in that situation.

I have no idea if he’ll make it at United long term, but I’m definitely not stupid enough to suggest he won’t off the back of that.

If youngsters dont have CR7 level debut and first impression, then they must be shipped off to the likes of crystal palace, thats where they belong, hopeless kids!

It is not the perfomance I was thinking about, it was his attitude when the final whistle went. I didnt see any really joy from him like the others in the squad or on the bench. Gomes was celebrating more even though no minutes was given to him....?

If it was Palace it wouldn't be so bad. Some of these lot want to ship him off to some mid teir Dutch club off the back of a 15 minute cameo against PSG

I have no idea what some of you were expecting but he had 15 minutes in a pressure cooker scenario, out of position, in a game we barely had any possession in!

Those scrutinising his poor touches, can I also remind you this was a match where -
    Mbappe tripped on the ball
Rashford booted it across the field for a throw in
    Dalot played a 40 yard pass to....Mbappe
De Gea inexplicably punched a ball trickling at him.

Chong ran around energetically (instructions) and tried to press. He played a couple of not great passes and he showed bravery to want the ball. That’s it.

Don't see how anyone can make a real judgement on him yet, hes had 60 minutes, if that, of first team football, one where we were defending for the majority and another where the entire team was sloppy. He needs a game where we are on top and playing attacking football to show what hes about

I didn't see the game or his reaction after the game, but that could easily be explained as him still being in a bit of shock for being a part of it, or even unhappy with his own performance (if it was actually as bad as people are making it out as). That or he just was soaking it up and isn't as outwardly expressive as other players.

    This.

He did give the ball away with his first few touches but I thought he calmed down a bit after that while still showing great energy, as others have pointed out he carried the ball upfield in the move leading up to the penalty, closed down PSG well and slid in on Di Maria. I'd forgive him everything else just for that last tackle alone. :smirk:

Writing off a 19-year old kid less than an hour into his professional career... This must be a satirical send-up of the Caf. There's actually no way you folks could be serious.

He was defensively confident and prevented Verratti's charge in the box cleanly, then there was that slide tackle on Di Maria where he scared the shit out of him.

Definitely helped in keeping the score within the hope of making it through.

Is it possible to assign a password to certain threads about young players so that numbnuts can't post there? Just make the password something like the age of the player + minutes of experience in the first-team. 1915. Easy to remember for those who care to try, numbnuts wouldn't get in.
