The Rapids are manhandling the Timbers. I watched a few minutes and Smith's goal was a rocket. Portland's defense is extremely bad though from the 15 minutes I watched(gave away two goals in 90 seconds).

Also, Charlie Davies scored a brace in his first competitive match back!

This is ugly for the Timbers. I'll be surprised if they keep it to 3-0. Rod Wallace looks out of his depth. Hopefully Spencer can motivate them to keep their heads up and not crumble completely in the next 45

Colorado 3 Timbers 1. Good work pulling one back. More a case of CR taking their foot off the peddle in the second half.

Some entertaining games today (of what I saw).

Well done to Charlie Davies, absolutely delighted.

I don't think he accepted the call, but I could be wrong. Either way I don't think he's decided yet.

That's actually one of his better interviews I think(which isn't saying much granted). One of my main gripes with the MLS is they tried to appeal too much to families, and people who don't much care for the sport instead of focusing on turning people who love the sport into MLS fans. Good to hear that they're going to try to do that.

Well that was fugly. Just got back. Wallace got roasted 2 times leading to 2 of the goals. I haven't watched the game on TV yet, but for the first half, aside from some dodgy defense, I felt like we looked OK and possessed the ball pretty well. Cooper's pretty good at holding the ball. Anyway, dire result.

Cracking time though. 450 travelling supporters for a game that far aways seems pretty decent. One of the Colorado groups, the Bulldogs, showed us a good time. Roasted a pig and rolled out the kegs. Fun bunch.

At Wizards games they used to have the 'Soccer Mom of the Game'. It was not an award for being a super sexy mom I can tell you. Awful stuff.

The TA looked a decent turn out from what I could see on telly.

Not sure if you could see from where you were but Rod Wallace's USA flag on his sleeve was upside down. Very appropriate because he was definitely in distress for most of the game.

They'll get better with experience. Looking forward to the 14th.

So the premier MLS club is not on US television. Nope, gotta tune to Galavision which I wasn't aware was on my DirecTV (channel 404 apparently).

It does make it hard to real take an interest in the league when I can't watch as many MLS games as I can PL games.

There are tons of games throughout the season that aren't shown on English language TV, which is complete horseshit. I think the TV contracts were only renewed for one year, meaning they'll all run out at the end of this season. I really, really hope MLS makes a big push at getting ESPN on board with showing more than 1 game a week on Thursday nights. I'd even be happy with a big ESPN3 presence. Get the one game a week on one of the big networks and if they keep an affiliation with Fox, I hope they put a fair bit on the Fox Sports regional channels (I see that some get their local team, but I'd like to see nationwide broadcasts the way the Champions League is shown). The league needs to be accessible to everyone, not just people with satellite or digital cable - which there are still tons of - and it needs to be on TV a lot more.

    Another stunner from Juninho, though.

The problem with MLS is the Direct Kick crap. They think along the same lines of the other major sports leagues in North America wanting to charge for a premium package instead of putting the product out there for free. But MLS doesn't have the same fan base and desire. Instead, they should be allowing all the matches televised on regional FSC be available in all markets, and work with the likes of VS, ESPN and others to televise the sport. But this is what you get when a league is run by former execs from the other major sports leagues.

    That's a good point.

At least with the other sports leagues there's tons of games readily available on basic cable (ie. 5 NFL games a week in ALL markets, NBA on ESPN for what seems like 6 hours every night, etc). In reality, I'm already paying something like $20-30 extra a month on my cable bill for some digital package just so I CAN pay the $5 to get Fox Soccer/GolTV package. I'd assume there's loads of other fans in the same boat. There's no way I'm paying an additional $80 to get Direct Kick, which STILL doesn't show every game. Maybe my opinion is skewed by living nowhere close to any MLS team (another rant for another day), which get regional coverage as far as I can tell, but there are some very easy steps MLS could take to grow the way it needs to.

For example... on Saturday I was able to catch the Chicago @ FC Dallas match on FSSW (North Texas/Oklahoma) despite living in Georgia. Yet on other nights the FC Dallas match would not be available to me. Why is this?

Last night, I tried to catch the LA @ NE match on the regional Fox Sports in Boston but it was not available. Why is this? I could understand if the match was on ESPN, FSC or ABC but Galavision doesn't fall under this, or shouldn't.

    No consistency.

Good for them. Glad they got a crowd as well. Back in USL with that stadium outside of ddowntown, their crowds were pretty dire. Fun town though.

I'm not a season ticket owner. Don't think I'll get one until I've been to OT to watch United play.

Were you at the game Vanrouge...? Vancouver's a great city. I had an aunt living up there when I was a kid. She sent me over a load of Whitecaps gear. It was around the time when Beardsley was there.

Missed the game, unfortunately, but a mate who went said the atmosphere was incredible throughout. And all in the old Empire Stadium the original Whitecaps used to play in back in the '70s!

When Beardsley was here, I still lived in Manchester, but I remember him playing just one game at United in the early '80s. Big mistake to let him go. But as a kid, I saw a few NASL games in Van. Pele, Beckenbauer, Best and Eusebio were standouts.
