Should Owen not stay beyond the end of this season who do you think should take over the number 7 shirt?

Is Nani ready for it? Or should someone else within the squad get it? Or a new signing get it?

I realise to some it is only a shirt number, but it does have a certain iconic status for us.....

Nani is the only person suitable to wear it at the moment in my opinion.

Didnt Nani say he likes 17 cos it has a 7 in it already but its kinda always been his fav number.

Apart from Messi and Sneijder who are both joining and would be favourites for the number, I think its possible it might be a new player that takes it.

Nani is the obvious candidate. Right now. We don't know who is coming in over the summer.

From the current squad Nani, but this is subject to any big money signing in the Summer.

Nani for Number 7, Bastian Schweinsteiger for Number 4 from Hargreaves.

I dont think Nani would swap, he's made 17 his own for United and Portugal.

This thread will be full of 2 sets of people. Those who think 7 is important and our best player should get it or those that say "it's only a number".

I know this because we've had this debate about 18,567,987 times since Ronaldo left.

It is only a number. But the commercial aspect is quite important. It isn't a romantic view of things but it's the only thing that matters, realistically.

I understand the significance if not the importance of the #7. Nani will get 1st choice.

Could be a very interesting summer of squad numbers with Neville, Hargreaves, Owen and possibly Wes leaving four first team numbers. Plenty of numbers to fill with big name transfers  I am not a transfer muppet honest

Nani out of the current players. If we get a good creative CM, or a real exciting young prospect, they may be in line too.

Nani is forging the legacy of the #17 so I'd give the #7 to someone else, not really sure who though.

Personally I think Wellbeck should get it. He knows the history of it and it could be the spark to set him along the way to emulating those players. The gesture would probably mean a lot to him.

This has been discussed to death, but my 2p's worth is give it Valencia and then when Sir Ryan sadly calls it a day give 11 to Nani.

what about 77 surely anyone who wears that number is OBVIOUSLY double the player

Its a number, its just that its been a big number at our club over the years.

If we do a major signing this summer, I feel Fergie will give the player number seven.

But I expect Valencia to get that number and Nani staying with his current one.

It's fantasy to think Wellbeck is ever coming back. I stand, of course, to be corrected but with Hernandez coming through now, Rooney and Berbatov sitting pretty, I think it's ambitious to think Wellbeck will be coming back.

Surely his form this season will grant him an opportunity? Otherwise, why would Fergie bother?
