Talking about Bryan Robson with @Mr. MUJAC and how he essentially sacrificed himself to become a legend at a United that was way below his level, got me thinking of other players who did the same. Players who were legitimately world class, but did not pursue outright glory even though their talent warranted a massive trophy cabinet in retirement.

Can you make an xi? If not, can you add players to the mix to create one?

So far, these players immediately come to mind:

    -------------------------DDG
    ----------------Buchan--------Shesternyov
    Armfield----------------------------------------Briegel
    ----------------------Voronin
    ------------Gerrard*-------Robson
    Matthews--------------------------------Finney
    ---------------------Shearer

*was chased by all the top teams of his era and although he won a EC at Liverpool, he could have been a multiple league winner as well as having possibly another EC or two to his name as well.

Perhaps the U.S.S.R. players should be removed for obvious reason.

Are there any top trumps on the players listed?

    Gigi Riva
Uwe Seeler: Inter wanted to buy him in the early 60s. They went on to win two ECs.

Always thought Le Tissier could have been great at a top club, but it's difficult to know for sure.

Marco Reus has only won one DFB Pokal.

He joined Dortmund right after they won 2 Bundesliga titles.

He missed the 2014 World Cup because of injury.

Totti could have left Roma and won a hell of a lot more than he did - just one league and a few domestic cups.

Yeah he did well internationally too, and he won't have regrets because he is insanely in love with Roma. But he could probably have gone anywhere in the world and won multiple leagues and CLs

He really was that good wasn’t he.

Speaking of Roma, Danielle de Rossi is another that could have moved. Heck, we needed a midfilder just like him for years...still do.

He would have a couple Champions Leagues already had he moved to Madrid.

So many good/great players have disappointed (Scholes, Carrick, Gerrard etc) that I'm generally loath to judge a player on their performances for England.

Good defenders seem to still look good for England though (Terry, Rio, Cole etc.). And Baines never did, on his admittedly limited appearances. This has always made me wonder whether he wasn't really capable of stepping up from Everton.

What a miserable career he's going to end up having compared to what it should have been. Really, he should have been one of the superstars of his generation, just like Rossi, but injury has absolutely ruined the pair of them. Such a shame.
Toyed with all three of these, especially Maradona, but I thought that would be heavily disputed given he did win a little bit. I suppose for one with a claim to be the best player ever, it's a paltry amount, though.

Franklin chased money, lots of money, so I was reluctant to put him in.

Batistuta is a great shout, as is Valderrama.
De Gea is on course to be one of the best keepers of all time. He should be claiming league titles and CL's, not 6ths, 5ths and whatever else we're going to bestow upon him. If he'd gone to Madrid, he'd already be a back-to-back CL winner.

Brazilian Ronaldo obviously had a great career regarding World Cups, individual awards and so on, but he really deserved to win a CL and more league titles.

Daniel De Rossi was the one i was going to say. Henrik Larson wasted his best years in Scotland.

    That's a murderous midfield @Fortitude.

Gone into a crapper tier here, and have tried to limit the number of South Americans, who usually played for big teams in their own countries, and Eastern Europeans who didn't have the choice:

    Croy
    Nilsson - Bratseth - Chumpitaz - Pearce
    Mauro Silva - Van Moer
    Lato ---------- Deyna ---------- Finney
    Larsson

Good team, that. I did feel a bit of a cheat using Eastern Europeans of that era. Will try to come up with replacements for them actually. I'm really struggling for leftbacks.

I would mention Paulo Futre with Atletico Madrid, where he only won 1 Copa Del Rey, even if he left Porto winning the European Cup vs Bayern.

Gordon Banks - Only won 2 League Cups at club level despite winning FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year 7 times and being regarded at one of the best keepers ever.

Le Tisser, if he had left Southampton and gone to a top club he would of been much higher regarded. Great player

Good team that apart from Larsson. Henke won 2 La Liga's a PL medal and CL medal on top of what he did at Celtic. Pretty trumps everybody mentioned so far.

I suppose Larsson, a bit like Batistuta, only moved for glory after his best years had passed. But yeah fair enough, let's replace him with the trophyless Di Natale.

Worth a shout for Signori too, although his Lazio team were competitive for most of the 1990s.

I hardly think De Gea counts. It's not as if he's been rejecting a move to Madrid, it just hasn't materialised, with help from a dodgy fax machine and him not being a tool downing sulker. And he's only halfway through his career and has already won everything there is to win in England.

But the point is he could have won so much more if he'd gone on to Madrid. Read the thread - the arguments are made throughout it.

I have often thought to myself, if we'd signed Shearer from Southampton, we'd have won the first 9 Premier League titles, and possibly a European Cup too...Phenomenal striker in his prime, he should have finished his playing career with a shedload of silverware.

Domestically, De Gea would have been no more successful at Real than United, 1 league title and a national cup apiece, which is perhaps a bit surprising.
The big difference is on the European stage, a UEFA Cup with united compared with 3 European Cups, 3 European Super Cups and 3 Club World Cups with Madrid.....
That period of 2014,16,17 was incredible for Real Madrid..!!

Think Fenomeno is also a decent shout. He didn't win the biggest trophies on domestic stage in the 90's and has only two top level league titles in his career - far too few for his quality.

    My picks:

    ----------------------Banks------------------------
    Petrescu-------Moore-----Bratseth-------Branco
    --------------------Bremner-----------------------
    ------------Robson---------Ardiles-----------------
    ----------------------Totti--------------------------
    -------------Seeler-----Fenomeno----------------

Could probably swap Bremner and Fenomeno(with Shearer/Batistuta for example), but all should have won a lot more...
