We clearly took the option then, would be happy if he signed on but has he burnt his bridges?

Not sure. Pochettino has a reputation for being unforgiving with players who mess around, but if (?) the new contract is still on offer and if (?) Toby were to sign it, then who knows ...

Sounds like we've officially walked away then from this, and Alderweireld is now mending bridges a bit in case he has to stay. Not much talk of anyone else being interested, and I can't see anyone going near him for the £50m or whatever we were willing to bid.

Sounds like we aren't interested at that price..Toby mate you'll have to put up with @GlastonSpur and the other plonkers for another season.

He'll be going for peanuts next year then. Doubt he'll sign a new contract. "Smart" business for Spurs there...

Sure United weren't interested at all, latest reports from United were he wasn't even on the shortlist. £25M is hardly peanuts.

For a world class defender it is.

for 40-50m we should be definitely interested. Regardless of the contract situation he's worth it.

I think he will go, I don't think he was ever going to be sold before the WC.

aye, his price can only go up.

for 50m or less I don't think there is a defender of his quality on the market. That's the only strong position Spurs have.

Doubt Poch will keep him unhappy for another season tho.

I think Poch has already his mind made up, there is rumours of Toby fecking about in contract talks, his agent (dad) agreeing then asking for more etc. Nothing concrete but the way last season panned out something happened behind the scenes.

I like him but the price is ridiculous for a 29 year old. I think we would be better going for a mid 20's player. What price would we have to pay for Tah.

Nah, very unlikely. He's not an unknown prospect. We know what he has to offer and at 29, he doesn't have many years at the top so regardless of what he does at the WC, I doubt his price will go up.

All the top defenders currently are in their early to mid 30's tho.

Toby can easily play 4-5 more years at top level. Well worth it IMO, considering how much we need an experienced head at the back.

Let's hope the news that we are walking away from the deal are true. 55m was already overpaying, 75m is nuts and glad we showed some sense. Levy did us a favor in my opinion.

God im actually agreeing with Glaston, but yes, Pochettino seems ruthless when it comes to 'are you a part of this project or not?'. If no, there is the reserves go train with them.

Maybe the real reason Alderweireld wasnt getting games when he got back to full fitness is Pochettino is just racist against Belgians, shipped Chadli out, benched Alderweireld. He just needs some Belgian Druids to confirm it and bust the myth around Pochettino.

No one's going to touch him at those valuations. Upto him whether he extends or waits out for a year. Natural that he's open to extending.

He knows he can leave for peanuts next year so he's relaxed. The ball is in Spurs' court.

Come on what do you expect him to say?

No I desperately want to leave to be paid my market value and to win trophies. Come on you Gooners!

Well, if he was actually desperate to leave, I wouldn't expect him to say ""Yeah, why not?" when asked about staying at Spurs.

Did anyone say he was desperate to leave or did you set these goalposts all by yourself?

Unless a post has been deleted or edited, you did not reply to or quote anyone. I even logged out in case you replied to somebody I had on ignore.
    So no then?
Anyway, I'm not shocked that these quotes came out hours after we leaked he's not a top target.
Staying at Spurs in their new stadium while counting down the months to a huge signing bonus doesn't seem that bad.

That's exactly the answer I would expect him to give if he was open to a move... If he had said 'Yes, I want to stay' or 'I see myself here next season' I would agree with you but 'Why not?' is hardly showing commitment. Followed by the ageless footballer's line of 'I do not know what is going to happen'

This is textbook behavior for a player under contract who is comfortable but open to hearing what is out there. I bet his agent is working like a trooper at the moment.

There's always a risk with any player but it's slightly increased when it's one that's closer to 30 and has had a few niggling injuries in the recent past. I'm up for buying Alderweireld if the price is right, but he's worth no more than £40 million and definitely won'y see his price go up unless Belgium win the WC and he's their talisman.

Don't tell me who I did or did not reply to. I'm fecking sick of some folk on here inventing things I've never said or making stupid claims.

I replied to post #2018 from Cliché Guevera.

It doesn't change the fact that (a) cyberman falsely claimed that I wasn't replying to anyone, and (b) that the post I replied to referred to desperation to leave.

I don't get what you are saying? He asked have you set these goalposts of him being desperate to leave, as he believed no one else has said that. You told him to look at the person you were replying to. The person you were replying to was in fact replying to your initial post about where you said he didn't look like a player desperate to leave. cyberman hasn't made anything up, you was in fact the first person in this conversation (dunno if anyone else in the thread has been saying this btw) to talk about deparate to leave and you did tell him to look at the person you were replying to in order to clarify this. Well the first post were you mention desperate to leave you were replying to no one.

Yes he has: he claimed that my post wasn't replying to anyone, when it was.

And actually the first to talk about "desperation" in this thread was post #1328 from @Nickthepip, who said: "The thing the resident Spurs fans don’t seem to understand is the appeal playing for United has for players. Look at Matic, desperate to join Utd due to the tradition, aura etc."

Anyhow, I'm tired of these feckwit discussions from people who are just plain desperate - to use this suddenly invogue word - to attack me anyway they can - invented or otherwise.

I'm simply saying that Alderweireld is not desperate to join United. I don't care if you agree or disagree. And nor do I care what you make of my reason for saying so.

If you want to discuss Toby and his potential transfer to United, then get on with it. But leave me out of your dreary nit-picking attempts to create irrelevant and boring side-tracks.

Do you do this in real life? Randomly make statements and assume everybody knows what you're talking about?
I'm replying to you by the way. You can tell because I'm about to click post reply
I'd like to point out Cliche only mentioned desperate in response to you saying he doesn't look desperate to leave!
He's responding to you! But your meltdown is hilarious.

Why on earth do you get so worked up about so much on a forum that's not even about your own club?

Do you think opposition fans are going to agree with you? And over 12k posts on here how do you spend so much time on a rival forum?

    I genuinely don't get it.

It's hilarious how a single Spurs fan can wind this whole forum up by himself.

Re: Toby - Levy's not an idiot, I think both Spurs and United are playing games and I think we'll eventually come to a deal this summer.

I really think you'd be dodging a bullet with this one - such a significant injury at his age is something to be wary of, and he really did not look like the same assured defender many have come to expect of him when he returned at the end of the season. Of course, he could come back stronger after the summer (though the World Cup might not help), but he's by no means the sure-fire success a bunch of people here seem to rate him as; I'd suspect he'd be more likely to end up as another Sanchez-esque expensive mistake.

I think everyone involved in this - Spurs, Toby, United, other clubs ... are waiting to see how he looks at the World Cup. He hasn't been the same player since his knee injury in 2016-17 season and so a big WC where he looks fully fit and in good form will grease the skids for a transfer.

As for his future at Spurs, I think the writing has been on the wall since last summer. Davinson Sanchez wasn't the club record signing (and now sporting a shiny new 6 year contract) to sit on the bench. For whatever reasons (lack of pace in the back 4, worry over his injuries, etc) it appears Pochettino decided to start moving on from Alderweireld starting at the end of the 16-17 season. And Pochettino has a bit of the Ferguson about him ... once he's ready to move on from you, that's how it is. He doesn't seem particularly fussed at all about what happens with Alderweireld.
