Ok, let's see if we can come up with a list of greatest (most skillful) goals of all time....Not by the impact of the goal (as in winning the game etc), but just by piece of skill that resulted in the goal.

The most obvious candidates are Maradona's Goal of Century and the van Basten volley, but who others will make up the all time all game Top 10 list.

Go ahead and nominate your submissions for Top 3 submissions.

ALL TIME. ALL GAMES. League, cup, friendlies all goes....

    Videos/Gifs welcome!

There are a few times where I remember thinking watching a game live, "that's the best goal I've ever seen" - the most recent would be Ibrahimovic's overhead against England from outside the box. Other than that I think I would say

Bergkamp's spin against Newcastle (nobody had tried that before or since, and it's actually quite difficult to sum up exactly what he did if you think about the goal without watching it.)

And joint third (As they're so similar) Maradona v England and Messi v Getafe

I still get a hard on every time i see Ronaldo's freekick vs Portsmuth, or Roberto Carlos' vs France.
Rooney overhead kick comes to mind aswell.
    Bergkamp vs Newcastle....
there are so many to chose from!

Very difficult to pick out the greatest goals of all time.
But the 3 that stick out in my mind considering the importance of the games and watching them live. (Not in any particular order)

    1. Giggs v Arsenal 1999 Fa Cup Replay.
    2. Rivaldo over head kick from outside the box in the last minute to secure Champions League football for Barcelona. Think it was his hat-trick in a 3-2 win.
    3. 1986 Maradona V England.

Not the best quality in the world, but the Van Basten volley for it's execution and significance will always be special to me. Same for the one Bergkamp scored against Argentina.

As a third.. I guess the Maradona solo?

I don't love it at all but Gerrard's very late FA Cup Final equaliser is an amazing hit I think.

A few that instantly come to mind.

Maradona's goal against England in the 1986 World cup.

    Ronaldo's goal against Portsmouth

    Ibra's goal againt England

    RvP goal against Aston Villa

And then a lot of Matt Le Tissier's goals. Always held hope that United would try and sign him, but the guy had very little ambition.

If van Basten's is up there I guess we have to consider Linus Hallenius effort as well.

Edmundo scored a similar goal against us in the club World Cup in 2000. Maybe not as controlled as Bergkamp's but it looked more natural and at speed.

It's great indeed. And just from the second best tier of Swedish football I believe.
But of course you can find loads of amazing goals when you consider all tiers in all countries.

    Wow.

That's a lot better tan MVB's. The skill to create the shot then the finish? Definitely one of the best I've ever seen.

I also really like that he uses his right foot to get it over the defender and then smashes it in with his left.

Ronaldo’s freekick v Portsmouth is up there for pure invention. Nobody has perfected a technique like that before. Was utterly stunning.

Maradona v England would be my shout I think.

No love for george weah 100m goal?

I find volleys are overrated. Good goals but top 3? You just kick the ball and it happens to go in.

i know it's only a penalty but Pirlos panenca against Hart is a big favourite of mine.
knockouts of an international tournament, hart jumping around giving it the big un 'i know where you're going'
The maestro clips it down the middle with a shrug and essentially destroys Hart as a top flight keeper in the process
    it's just

Yep you have a point, just googled it and although filmed with an actual potato I see what you mean. I don't think it holds up to Bergkamp's tho, Edmundo's was a flick with the outside of the boot and then ran around the defender. Bergkamp held off the defender, actually chopped down on the ball to put spin on it and then met the ball on the return. It's insane.

I wish to rather strongly disagree with this I'm afraid - the distance of the pass to van Basten & time that the ball is in the air. Much more difficult to hit the ball in any kind of controlled way.

Don't get me wrong, Halleinius is a very fine goal & a great piece of skill but the ball is already under the control of a player juggling with it, essentially. Much easier, relatively speaking, imo.

You can look at it another way too, :D. Van Basten's is a fluke in a way that the other isn't - MVB could have 200 more attempts & only get a few close-ish to the same would be my guess, given that he also needs to get it up & over the GK in a fairly peculiar way too.

You could argue Hallenius needs to get three touches right whereas van Basten only has the one to get right.

If it's just about a long pass I give you Peter Foldgast.

EDIT: I just watched the van Basten one again and it's a longer pass than I remember.

Don't think it's better than MVB's. Yes the guy takes a great first touch and beats the defender, but he also lays himself up perfectly for a volley with no defender in his face to shoot. MVB had to watch the ball from a curling cross, defender in his face and tighter angle.

Just my opinion and still a brilliant goal and also never saw it before and glad I did - but MVB will always be a hero to me as was in Holland in '88 as a kid and that goal set up a summer of fun trying to replicate it with mates

Do we judge the goal in isolation or in the context of the particular occasion? If the latter, then Zlatan’s (admittedly ridiculous) goal in a friendly vs England should not be in the reckoning. So:

    1. The individual dribble - Maradona vs England, WCQF 86 (the 2nd one...).

    2. The team goal while toying with the opposition - Marco Tardelli, WC Final 82 (with best ever celebration).

    3. The aesthetically pleasing - Crespo vs Liverpool 2005 CL Final following Kaka perfect pass.

    4. The Roy of the Rovers last minute heroics - Gerrard vs West Ham FA Cup Final 2006 (Mark Hughes vs Oldham 94 FA Cup semi-final if nominating Gerrard is beyond the pale).

    5. The acrobatic - Ronaldo last night.

    6. The header - ???? Any suggestions? Roy Keane v Juventus? Ronaldo in 08 final? Ramos in 14 Final?
