Why are players in lower placed teams allowed to get away with bad challenges? Especially on top players like De Bruyne, Hazard etc. For a league that is driven by money, there seems to be no indication that they’d give some protection to the top players that are basically the face of this league. An injury to one or two top players pretty much ruins an enjoyable league or ruins the viewing experience for the average fans. I realize that some of you might argue that refs and players regularly give or get soft challenges, While this might be true — ultimately, I just want top players to be afforded some protection.

Disagree. Players in general should be protected, regardless of ability or what team their playing for.

Also, apart from today, with Puncheon's tackle on De Bruyne, can you name an incident where players have been targeted?

    Hugely reactionary thread,

Hazard is probably the most protected player in the league, arguably ever. De bruyne on the receiving end of a couple of bad ones lately no doubt but these have been the exception rather than the rule.

Challenges on Ronaldo from ball, Morrison and more went on for years and he was called soft and a diver, possibly due to being Portuguese and his off pitch persona.

People seem to get incredibly moral about a certain type of player. Bad tackles are at an all time low in my opinion

Get to feck with this thread.

Why do top players deserve more protection than run of the mill?

Why did the OP not get made after one of Alli’s various shit tackles this season?

I mean Hazard and our other attacker regularly get chopped down with intentional or clumsy challenges. Just makes for frustrated viewing

Your last para is spot on. Hysteria because the challenge was on KdB. OP wouldn’t give a stuff if roles were reversed and it was Puncheon on the receiving end.

I never saw such outage when Cr7 wAs constantly fouled when he was here. Maybe ref has a tendency to see things differently considering these flair players tend to fall down easily especially hazard.

You breathe on Hazard and it’s a foul.

The outpouring of hate towards Michael Owen for seeming to laugh while speaking about the incident, and it being completely removed from context, is pretty telling. It is near cult like.

It's cleaner game than ever and there are far more pressing issues with the game than getting up in arms about the occasional red mist from players - who when this happens should be punished on a case by case basis.

I don't remember an outrage when Long stamped on Fellaini's achilles, or just today Walker literally pushed Benteke into the stands, why this sudden outrage over KDB?

I’ve just seen a replay of the tackle. Not the best from Puncheon, but the sort that wouldn’t even warrant a mention of made on a lower profile player. Hysterical stuff.

Look no one tunes in to this league to watch Jason Puncheon or other average players kick a ball. We want to watch the best in the world.

94th most fouled player in the league needs protection?

    So you’ve proven my point.

I could understand the uproar if it was actually a shocking challenge.

De Bruyne will be back within a week or two.

There will be far worse tackles made this season.

    Ridiculously reactionary thread.

You should tread carefully with where you take that argument and not wander into enforcing different rules of different players based on what some might seem to be entertaining. Not only is it a narrow minded notion but how do you quantify this and a players worth. I assume Ferdinand, vidic, terry, Keane and Scholes would be protected under your system? After all these were the best in the world in their positions.

Because they're both shit and De Bruyne is not.

Personally I don't think "better" players should get anymore protection than anyone else but that's pretty much the reason no one cares about carthorses like Fellaini or Benteke.

Richarlison, Alli, Zaha, Ayew, Sanchez, Chicharito and Loftus Cheek on average, all get fouled more than Hazard in the Premier League.

He's a skillful player, who likes to dribble. It's going to happen.

I think a more interesting thread would be referees getting too much protection and not being culpable for their shit performances.

This reasoning is why the moral outrage over KdB has no credibility.

You either care about bad tackles across the board or you don’t.

It’s bollocks to pick and choose based on the perceived quality of player.

Because he's a 'top' player. Apparently 'average' players getting injured is fine because they don't make the league enjoyable.

I still maintain people are overreacting to Puncheon's tackle. It was a bad tackle, but his intent is clear imo. He's trying to stop the counter attack after the penalty. He's aiming at a tactical foul but fecks it up. Not as malicious as people are making it seem, but a definite yellow and possible red (depending on the referee).

In other words, Puncheon isn't trying to injure him, or specifically targeting him like Keane did with Haaland.

So SJW are out in full force it seems, and no I'm not talking about OP in this thread.

    But:
I couldn't agree more, with this post. But it seems that game has been moving towards this vanilla of picking players for a protection based on technical quality of players. I wonder how op would have felt about 90s/early 00s when players like Roy Keane and Patrice Vieira were playing.

    That is bullshit.

I don’t really give a feck about KDB and Hazard any more than about Benteke. Nasty challenges happen all the time, let’s not be hypocrites.

A player like Hazard is more likely to draw fouls because of his dribbling style of play, fantastic quick feet, and the way he invites players to dive in then beat them. Also, as soon as there’s contact he’s on the deck.
i can’t remember a time where he’s been successfully kicked out of the game. Herrera tried that and look what happened....hazard was so overprotected that Herrera was sent off in no time.

Puncheon makes that tackle no matter who is on the ball star player or not. You try to take out the guy leading the counter and take the booking knowing it stopped a possible goal. And your protection from the ref shouldn’t vary based on skill

Definitely. Kane, Alli, Murphy and Puncheon all should have been sent off v City now, getting farcical. What happened to de Bruyne today is inevitable if shithouse tackles do not get the punishment they deserve.

Hazard not being protected? Every time I watch him, the moment he feels any sort of contact he usually goes down getting a free kick.
