If you would like to move to L Stand for the FA Cup match vs Brighton (KO 19.45 on 17th March) all season ticket holders can now contact the ticket office on 0161 868 8000 to request a move for this game.

There will be relaxed stewarding with respect to standing, and supporters are required to stand up, sing and support the team for 90 minutes.

The aim of this is to show the club what can be done with regards to atmosphere if they allow like minded fans to get together, stand together and create an away end mentality at home...

If the trial is successful, then it will be rolled out permanently in J Stand.

I wonder how relaxed they can be? I thought it was partly a police directive that sitting had to be enforced?

Still, sounds like a good move. I'd even start attending again if it becomes regular.

There are discussions with the club ongoing about changing the pricing structure of the kiosks to match the prices of the surrounding pubs, bringing more into the ground early, and turning off the shit songs on the tannoy 15 minutes before kick off to allow the fans to generate their own atmosphere...

Great idea, I really hope this works. The idea of an away like atmosphere would boost the stadium. Jesus I hope the fans take advantage of this situation.

    Liking the idea.

Really hope it works. Old Trafford, with the history and size of it, doesn't deserve a shit and quiet atmosphere.

I don't really like the excuse of "the team isn't exciting the fans to sing" - there's shit teams in league 2 that don't stop singing even when they are 4-0 down. That is no excuse.

I like these ideas, I hope it works out! One of my main gripes with pre game build up, is the music that drowns out the atmosphere, there's no need for it.

Sounds like we're finally taking steps to sort it out, as opposed to just playing about with the idea like we have done previously.

There needs to be a singing section in each stand though. In the SAF stand there probably needs to be one in tier 1 and 2. Getting the SAF stand going is key because there's no connection between J stand and the Stretford End. Quite often they're singing different songs and it falls apart in the SAF stand because everybody is singing different songs depending which stand they're closest to. It's not often the whole stadium is singing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak.

Hope this idea works so we can roll it out across more games and a bigger area within the stadium.

    Great, really hope this works.

'Men of Harlech' from the film Zulu comes to mind ....with Stanley Baker screaming at the troops to sing.

A bit dramatic, but what the hell!

I love singing along but feel a bit of a cnut when it seems it's 1 for every 9 or 10 people giving it some. It'd be great to be in that section.

So, what's the difference between this and the Singing Section we have at the moment in J Stand?

The main problem I have with this is that our fans will never permanently be put there. We know it works there, we've trialled it already. Why don't we trial this is the lower Stretford End? It all seems pointless to me if all we get from it is a decent atmosphere for a game. Unless of course we are thinking of moving the away section, not sure if we are allowed though.

See the post immediately above yours...people in singing areas just to say they are, but then don’t actually sing

So is there gonna be some "noise police" there to make sure everyone in attendance is making noise, and kick out those aren't singing loud enough? While its a good idea in theory, I just don't understand how it can be enforced to make sure that section is always making some noise. Like the Singing Section now, which seemed a great idea at the time, but nowadays I barely hear them from Stretford End.

Unfortunately there's an exec suite slap bang in the middle of that section.
Like you say, the previous trial in L stand v Real Sociedad in 2015 was very good.
Pretty sure it was considered to move away fans to SAF stand tier 3 and I think Villa fans were put there for a game.
Moving J stand to L stand permanently and giving a portion of K Stand tier 2 might be an answer but isn't there some new Premier League directive coming in, about away fans being near to the pitch?

The roof in L stand is much lower than J stand and helps to create a louder atmosphere. It was very noticeable v Sociedad a few years ago.

I was in the family stand for a few years, it needs to be moved along with the executive suite. I was also in the L stand for the trial and it set the standard really for what the atmosphere needs to be. The new PL rules with the away fans is a kick in the teeth but how do Newcastle get away with it? City also have the away fans on 3 levels. There's definitely options there but the problems lie with exec suite/family stand and the away end rules. Put a section in either one and see complaints about atmosphere disappear.

its unrealistic to expect the whole stadium to be singing together, there are just too many people attending nowadays who have no interest in singing - TBH there are hardly any stadiums in the whole world nowadays where everyone is singing, even the best atmospheres are usually restricted to 1 or 2 parts of a ground.
The aim at Old Trafford should just be to get some atmosphere back into the stands behind each goal - I think that is an acheivable aim.

thats more to do with acoustics rather than how much noise is being produced - although its true that there are certain bits of J Stand that are louder than others and it is not been a complete success, still a huge improvement on what it was though

Except of course when we're playing shit and everyone's shouting "attack". I actually love when the atmosphere is like that, downside of course is it only happens when things are not going well:smirk:
