Trump has long held the belief that video games have a direct connection with gun violence in America so my guess is that he's only going to listen to the people at this meeting that validate that belief. Be afraid, American gamers.

In regards to video games, I’ll be honest... it’s always blown my mind that Grand Theft Auto is a thing.

Then it might be better you not see what some of the kids have been learning/saying in some online games out there.

I'm also surprised at the age of some of the kids that get to play GTA though. But 14+ should be ok.

As long as COD gets banned... that's one positive from this.

I teach teenagers, I know what’s out there. GTA is just the most obvious example of video game that to me should have never existed in the first place.

I've got to disagree, because its quite entertaining once you're mature enough to get it. Maybe not the initial versions, but its become pretty satirical from GTA 4 (2008) onwards. Its also a very well polished game for its size... there's just so much to admire about it from a gamer's perspective. Even if the majority of players just use it as a mass-murder simulation.

GTA is brilliant, and the same games exist everywhere else in the world. The idea that they have anything to do with the gun violence issue is ridiculous.

It’s just another form of media. If you believe that should be banned, then you should be in favour of violent films being banned too.

School age teenagers aren’t supposed to be playing it anyway.

    It’s a stupid premise for a game.

Let’s run around being a drug dealer/pimp/murderer and call it “fun”.

Says you. Where do you draw that line?

The Godfather should never have been made because it glorifies murder and organised crime. Same for The Sopranos. Breaking Bad should never have been made because it glorifies drug dealing.

Not that its some great bastion of morality either, but as I said the game has become satirical and even self-aware in its latest iterations. I don't even think most players get that, but you can't pin that on the developers/writers either.

    Have you played it?

Yeah, I know “says I”. I could just “says you” when you say it is brilliant.

Comparing movies where you are a passive observer to games where you are an active participant though seems a bit flawed.
Those already are banned from them.

Also, to both of you... I never said the game should be banned. I said the game should never have been made. There’s a difference.

I was in college when GTA 4 came out, so yes. Even then I thought it was a stupid premise for a game.

I completely disagree. GTA4 onwards are by far the best video games ever made. The satire and social commentary is hilarious and exceptionally clever. The games are so much fun and magical in their achievements. They should not be played by anyone under 16 though. (They say 18 but meh)

Yeah, a good few aspects of it blatantly satirise and take the piss out of modern, corporate obsessed America. And while it's not exactly some magnificent Shakespearean tale, GTA IV was an interesting take on the immigrant arriving fresh off the boat in pursuit of some mythical American dream.

Aspects of it may be problematic, but I don't think it's really any worse than the myriad of movies where violence is so ingrained it's not really even a problem - at least GTA highlights that crime and conflict is quite violent and seedy, unlike an array of Marvel and DC movies where entire cities are reduced to rubble and yet the country is doing just fine by the following Monday.

I guess I won't try to sell you on GTA... but given that several people in this very thread seem to have gotten healthy enjoyment out of it, you still maintain it shouldn't have been made?

Is it inline or ever worse than Keeping up with the Kardashians? :p

Nope. I just think it’s a stupid premise for a game.

Folks are jumping to conclusions all over the place in here though.

Oh we should ban it because you think the premise is dumb and not what YOU consider fun. Brilliant :houllier:

Out of interest, would you apply the same to any game where violence is an inherent feature?

How come, though? I'm not sure what makes GTA all that different to Call of Duty etc - the former generally draws to the fact you're playing as a fairly brutal criminal, where the latter arguably leads to a greater glorification of war/conflict. Personally speaking, of course.

I personally see a difference between warfare and drug dealing/pimping/mass murder.

Killing Nazis =/= Running over people on the sidewalk with a car
