The most important position for me currently is a right winger. We're sorely lacking a bit of attacking width and someone who can cross it consistently.

A commanding CB with great leadership ability should also be a priority but not as high. I'm willing to see how our CBs perform this season

Personally I think he is a better CB than fullback but having that versatility would be of great benefit to us if something happens to Shaw.

we've no one world class in attack - we've Martial closest to having that potential but a world class right sided attacker would be ideal. There's also room for a world class number 9 or 10 as Lukaku, Lingard, Mata and Rashford clearly aren't elite attackers.

priorities to extend contracts of De Gea and Herrera

we'd need to sell a few in the next few weeks as there are several with 6 months left - Darmian and Jones could raise 15/20m combined and that would largely pay for Toby who is a very good defender and a good passer

Maybe better looking at this in the long term though - Bailly, Lindelof and Smalling are staying - if there's room for 1 more then maybe someone younger than Alderwiereld

watching Juve this season it was so apparent that Sandro and Cancello were a class above our fullbacks so we need to upgrade those areas

in the summer I'd say goodbye to Rojo, Valencia and potentially one of Fellaini, Matic or Lukaku depending on who is coming in

By letting go of five players and signing four you pretty much quadrupled our wages for one less player. Its not going to happen.
If we are going to try to sign those types and that amount of players we need to let go of players like Matic, Fellaini (he is a high earner, you are right there) , Mata, Lukaku and even take a bullet and maybe say bye bye to De Gea. Or Sanchez of course.
We already have the most expensive wage bill in the league. Except for Fellaini we will not free up any wage room by letting those other squad players go.
Transfer fees are pretty much irrelevant btw, its the wages that are important.

Sancho and Milenkovic are still young players and their wages will be comparable to the Valencia and Jones wages respectively. Neves' wage would be comparable to Fellaini's. The only one we might need to bite the bullet for is Maguire - but even that can be covered if we decide to offload Lukaku/Sanchez if their form and our style of play does not work out.

Im sorry, but no way that anyone of those players joins us or anyone else for less than 200k in todays market. Jones is on 50k btw.

I'm with you. If we end up buying him it'll be to play him as a centre back for sure but he'll keep Shaw on his toes for sure.

The article saying that we were keen on Lucas Hernández until Bayern beat us is interesting.

Seems like there's a pattern of us being linked with centre backs who are versatile like Milenkovic & Eder Militao. Either of these 2 would be able to compete with Dalot for that RB berth. Plus Dalot can play LB too.

Perhaps after France won the WC using only CBs across the back 4 our strategy may be to do something similar and not to target specialists wingbacks like Tierney, Alex Telles, Davide Calabria etc

Those two are 18 and 21 years old respectively. One is a defender. The 200k wages you mentioned is for Mbappe levels which these 2 are not. No way they demand for that sort of money. If they do then we should walk away.

    I disagree.
Its not how the market works.
There is and should be correlation between transfer fees and wages. Sancho for example, will cost 75m at least from Dortmund. A weekly wage of 100k is 5m per year in wages, which is 25m over a five years. I am not going into detail why this is unrealistic, but it really is if you compare cost (wages) to asset value (transfer fee).
With the increase in transfer fees the last couple of years the wage demands will be and are following suit accordingly. These young players agents will see to that if nothing else.
    EDIT
Mbappe is on 300k per week btw, not counting the other ways I am sure PSGs owners are reimbursing him....

If these rumors with Douglas Costa are true itd be perfect IMO. Would give us potentially the most exciting and well balanced attacking lines in the league, imagine having Costa, Rashford and Martial counter attacking at teams and bringing the ball forward

Getting that and a center back like Skriniar or Koulibaly would be perfect. Our squad wouldnt be complete but itd be hard to pick out real weaknesses. Both fullback positions are tricky as we have 2 older players and 2 younger players, so we just have to ride out the inconsistencies really and hope Dalot and Shaw develop well and Young/Valencia can ride it out in the mean time (mostly young at this point). In midfield we have Matic, Herrera, Fred, Pogba, Pereira and then depending on situation we could put Lingard or Mata at the tip of the 3. Dont really need anything there for next season.

It's really just the right wing and a CB that could completely transform us and along with younger players further progressing, we could be looking at a way better situation next year. Greenwood, Chong, Gomes, fosu-mensah, tuanzebe, Garner are all very promising as well, and while all wont make it, some surely will. So I really disagree with anyone saying we need 4-5 signings. 2 of the right ones and getting rid of some dead wood would be ideal.

In a way I’d imagine that is the Pogba effect as even now Shaw’s involvement/position in attacks seems determined by Pogba or Herrera/Fred’s position. If two of those are advanced he often tucks in and becomes more of a midfielder instead of pushing for an overlap which is good play but preferably I’d have my LB bombing on at all times but I guess Matic isn’t quite trusted to be able to cover our left side if we are caught up the pitch.

I’d imagine Deschamps thinking was probably something similar hence why he went with the 4 CB’s or more defensive fullbacks we’ll say.

You would think from what we’ve been doing recently of the CB’s pushing right up to join Matic on the halfwayline someone like Lucas who is comfortable playing at LB would be handy as if he has to go wide he won’t be phased.

I see people still calling for Alderweireld but I think he's lost a yard of pace form what I've seen this season and has made as many mistakes as our much malinged CB's, I'm not 100% sure who we should go for in truth but if he's going to partner Lindelof or Bailly he needs to be good in the air because no matter how much they settle into the league they are never going to be strong aerially.

I think a key signing is another fullback, we are still way too weak in that position, player slike Lucas Hernandez, Chilwell and Hakimi should all be looked at IMO.

I am not convinced either that we need to splash out the cash at CB. It will be interesting to see how we do the rest of the season with a much higher line and a higher press. Jones and Lindelof have been doing well so far even if its not even close to be enough to judge them on. That said I would take Koulibaly if Napoli would let him go and he wants to come. Not so sure about Aldeweireld tbh.
I would agree on a FB. I think Darmian will leave for sure and Valencia might as well. TFM has not lived up to the hype enough to be granted a place in the squad nxt year IMO. So one new FB.
Then I personally would focus on two CMs, one world class in his prime and one younger but very close to his prime. Midfield is our weakest link by far IMO. Then we have the Lukaku-issue as well but I guess that depends on how he performs under OGS the rest of the season.
I dont think we need or that its realistic that we change up the squad more than 3-4 players next year, but we need to get class in there. No punts.

I feel like we should be playing Pereira over Lingard. Has way more potential and is a more intelligent footballer. Feel like he hasn't really had a chance. The few minutes he's played this season I was impressed. If he turns out to be a good number ten then we should focus on getting a RW, CB and a fullback in.

I dont think we really know exactly what we need in the summer as the dour demeanour and failure of several players under Mourinho could change performance wise under the next six months with players such as Pogba emerging again for example. If we were to go back a month I woul dsay the surgery was absolutely huge, but if players do perform now, in the summer I would like to see:

Full backs - Darmian, Young and Valencia out - Laird bought up from the youth ranks and a another good full back signed (Bissaka would be my choice)

Centre backs - Mensah, Rojo, Jones, Lindelof sold, bring back Tuanzabe to add to Smalling and Bailly and sign two top quality centre backs (DeLight and Upamecano possibly)

Central midfielders - Fellaini and possibly Herrera out, I would like to see a top quality defensive midfielder in Ascacibar would be the perfect signing, Id also like Ndombele as added competition to Matic considering his age and dependant on how Fred progresses.

Wide players and striker - Lukaku and possibly Mata out. I think Gomes is ready to step up to add to our wide players and even possibly as an attacking midfielder, also Mason Greenwood is probably already good enough for game time in any three of the attacking places and we will struggle to move on Sanchez if he doesnt perform with his salary. I think both Rashford/Martial and Greenwood can fight it out for two of the three attacking places, I would still like to sign Sancho though being an exceptional young talent

I basically think we need two centre backs and a quality defensive midfielder, I would like more but with some of the very proising young talent we have and already a bloated squad of a lot of mediocrity, bar three essential signings the priority should be moving on several players, three of four quality additions, two or three quality youth additions to replace 6-8 wrong types/ages/quality of players and the right manager in the summer and we could have a very promising young side again

The only CB we need is one who will lead our back line no point of bringing in sidegrades or slight upgrades.

I think we massively need to be splashing out on centre backs personally, I would say we need two not one. Still dont see a partnership between any of them. TFM I think has been wasted, why has he been played at right back by both us and at loan at Palace, the guy is a really really promising centre back, think his career been ruined coming to us so far, a shame as I think he had a chance of making it here as a cb.

Lets face it Jones, Rojo and Smalling have had plenty enough time now, I think two of the three should go, I would keep Smalling out of all of them, Bailly will be interesting the next six months as although a bit crazy he has all the attributes. Personally dont think Lindelof is good enough to ever be anything other than average, do we even have one quality defender as we certainly dont have a reliable one?

Slight upgrades, I think there are a lot of centre backs out there who would be huge upgrades on the defenders we currently have at centre back personally, though it is hard to get a good fit, look how many centre backs City had to sign and Wenger didnt manage to sign a real top quality one after Sol Campbell.

Presently I wouldnt trust any single one of our defenders to lead a title challenge:

Jones cant stay fit and has actually regressed since we bought him, he was a better defender at Blackburn
Rojo has done ok at centre back, but just ok and as been lucky not to get a few red cards
Bailly looked a rough diamond in his first season, he has looked just roug this season, still think he has a chance though
Smalling has probably been our best performer at centre back but he is awful on the ball and doesnt seem to have intelligence, seems totally reliant on his physical attributes
Young has done ok at full back but isnt a first choice starter especially with his age next year
    Valencia same as Young
Shaw has the ability, does he have the attitude?
Dalot, looks very promising, time will tell
Darmian, well he is off isnt he

We have Laird and possibly Tuanzabe to add as squad players next season to replace a couple of those players, but yes we definately need upgrades in my opinion, at least one

I would personally sell Jones and Rojo because not only are they not good enough to lead a title challenge they are injured most of the season. I would bring in two quality cbs those two along with Bailey, Lindeloff and Smalling as 5th choice would be ready for a title challenge. I would also bring in a new RB and LB to replace Valencia and Young. But only if its the right players otherwise i would keep what we have got another season.

Pretty much agree with that though doubt it will happen. I would swap out Lindelof for Tuanzabe as 5th choice centre back though Bailly and Smalling being the two back ups to a new partnership probably. I think in Shaw and DAlot we have potentially two good full backs and I think our youth player Ethan Laird could be ready to be in the squad next season as back up too, would love Bissaka at the club as a 4th full back personally

I would say RW, RB, CDM and CB

RW - Pretty obvious since that's the position we are lacking in since god knows when.

RB - Watching Young recently he failed to track his man back properly when he pushed up, I'm guessing he just aint got it in his legs anymore. So someone good and experienced to rotate with Dalot would be ideal. Although if we got a good RW this will help Young and we may not need a new RB to replace him.

CDM - Matic is tired. I would prefer us splashing out on this position for a first team player and drop Matic to rotation with Felliani.

CB - No surprises here. Sell Jones and Rojo, it hurts me everytime I see Jones in the lineup, he can defend well at times but he's the type of player that in an instant will cause your team to go 1 or 2 down through incredible mistakes. Splash out on this position for an experienced first team defender.

The Jones and Lindelof partnership has been decent for two games but I don't think we can plan long term around Jones given his injury record, so I'd be looking for a top CB partner for Lindelof with Bailly and Smalling as the secondary duo and Axel back in the mix as a 5th option.

I agree on letting Darmian and Valencia go, I'm not a fan of Young but I think him and Dalot will be the RB's next season, so we need that cover/competition for Shaw at LB.

With midfield I think we'll only get one unless Ander goes, then we'll have to get 2 CM's in. The forward line is hard to predict at this point but overall I think 4 players are needed at least, in the summer, a CB, LB, CM and a Forward.

I’d say a centre back, right winger, defensive midfielder and a creative attacking midfielder

Would have said right back as well but surely the young lad Laird looks like a brilliant prospect for that position. Similar potential to Greenwood.

How many times have we bought in five first team players in one window? Let alone two of them being borderline unpurchasable right now (Sancho & Kane)

The only positions we can be sure right now that we need to upgrade in the summer are CB and DCM. It's possible that we'll want to bring in a RW but what if -- bear with me for a moment, please -- Sanchez rediscovers his old form under Ole as a brilliant RW? And what if Chong is ready, next season (when I believe he'll be 20) to take the next step?

RB doesn't concern me as much as Shaw and Dalot look primed for the 19/20 season. Depth is the issue here, but I don't think we need to address the issue of depth with new transfers.

Just watched the Huddersfield game back in full. It’s just so much more fun to watch us again now. And having the front four academy lads on at the end was class!
For me, we should sign Sancho from Dortmund. It would be perfect. Obviously to piss city off but also because obviously we need a good right winger, and he is homegrown too. We’d have so many good homegrown young talents in the squad then.
Then, I would sign a top centre half. Maguire would be nice, again cos of the homegrown thing, but Koulibaly looks class as well.
And I would also try to get Doherty from wolves. Another United tradition in having Irish players in the squad. He’s playing well at right back for wolves and he could interchange with dalot over the coming years.
Tierney from Celtic also maybe for the other side. Scottish player.

And also, since I’ve finished my selection boxes after Christmas and feeling greedy again, de jong from Ajax to replace Matic over the next year or so.

Oh, and I forgot, we should give Greenwood a few games this season, he looks mint.

    Cheers lads

    Problem areas:

CB: Crying out for a leader in the back, I also think this would help get the best out of Lindelof and Smalling.

RB: Would love for Dalot to get a run of games to cement his place but if he fails to adapt we need to look into bringing in a first teamer.

RW - Sanchez needs to pick up the slack for right wing otherwise Mata and Lingard will do currently.

CDM - Fellaini can rotate with Matic we just need him to find his Belgium form.

CM - A first team CM to complement Pogba would be ideal, I'm not sold on Fred but he, Herrera, Pereira can all rotate.

I think 2/3 key defensive signings need to made in summer and the rest would be a bonus. Hopefully we can promote a few younger players to help pick up the slack in other areas of the pitch.

    Uh...Sanchez??

As for the alleged need to have so-called "elite" attackers -- you just destroyed two teams in one week without "elite" attackers. So why would United need to go out and spend another gazillion on strikers the club doesn't really need at all?

Leicester won it all without the "elite" manager or the "elite" players.

Sanchez has been awful at United so far.... like most I expect an improvement but world class is a stretch

he'd one season - 2016-2017 where you could say he was close to that level but it's a big jump for him to play at the level we need

we've hammered two shit teams but I wouldn't read too much into it. Our attack still has massive room for improvement

That doesnt make it Fifa. Yes its alot of changes but lets be honest...we are sht. Its needed. The only person who is not getable is Kane. And i said its a big if. Toby is 25 mil, Pavard 35, Rabiot free - sancho harder but not impossible. Kane as said before. Why is that not possible.

Centre half. Left back. Right winger. Let’s say Alderweireld, Tierney and (in an ideal world) a player like Dembele at Barcelona. An attacking manager that values the club’s ethos and you’re good to go.

We don’t need the wholesale circus many of this lot would recommend.

    My ideal summer:

    CB - de Ligt/Koulibaly/Skriniar/Milenkovic
    LB - Chilwell/Telles/Lucas Hernandez
    CM - de Jong/Neves/Maier/Aouar

We also need a forward but I don't think we can get Sancho or Dybala just yet and I'd worry about the attitude of Ousmane Dembele, plus we aren't sure what formation the new manager will use. Personally I'd buy another Striker, Jovic from Frankfurt is a good option at his buyout clause IMO, him and Rashford to compete for the Striker role.

Not wholesale change but I think we absolutely need a mobile, ball playing #6 added to the midfield to compliment Pogba and Herrera as a perfectly structured midfield 3, however I'm curious who the #9 is if you have your way with I'm guessing Martial on the left and Dembele on the right? As I like Rashford as a Striker but unless he starts becoming a consistent goal scorer I'd be wary and Lukaku would see the quick touch pass and move play come to an end.

I’d like to see Pereira given more opportunities in midfield. I’m also fairly happy with Matic in there for now.

As for a striker, I don’t really mind. We’ve currently got Martial, Lukaku, Sanchez, Rashford, Mata and Lingard on the books. There’s a nice balance in what each of them offer. What we could do with is another attacker (preferably left-footed) that can play down the right, beat players and whip in a cross.

As long as the next manager is playing attacking football then I don’t mind who plays centrally. This isn’t some utopian team sheet. I suspect we can make it work with Sanchez or Rashford. Lukaku is no mug either, in spite of the current narrative. I’m interested to see Mason Greenwood, too. If he’s as good as some say then the club could be saving millions.
