Was he just talking about transfers here or a change in formation as well? He has eluded to wanting to play with 3 at the back before (last season) and he was chasing yet another CB this summer.

    -----------------de Gea-----------------
    -----Bailly--Alderweireld-Lindelof------
    Dalot--------Matic----Fred-------Young
    ------------------Pogba-----------------
    ------------Lukaku-Sanchez------------

Most of our team seems to fit this formation better (on paper). Even Martial and Rashford would be in central positions rather than wide. Lindelof looked better in a 3 against Watford last year, Alderweireld's quality on the ball allows him to step out and still have cover with the other 2 CB's in the team.

Maybe I am reading too much into the word "plan" and it was just a list of players he wanted?

Jose might be thinking of that

But he can still do that by playing Matic in Toby's place and Andres, Fred in centre midfield of 4..Front 3 consist of Alaexis Pogba and Lukaku ..,This way Jose can select all his best players with Marrial, Lingard, Rashford as subs and also cover any injuries !!!!

Sandro instead of young and rest above was his plan. But our reactive lethargic policy made it impossible.

He can still play that formation if he wants to. We have 5 centerbacks.

I guess. Although the other defenders are not very imposing with the ball. I wonder who the second player he wanted was.

Watching last night it's pretty obvious that an experienced head next to Bailly would be ideal and what Mourinho had in mind. He's physically imperious enough to cover for a slower CB but a little reckless - Some composure beside him as needed. We have a decent stable of CB's but they're all mostly head bangers, Lindelöf hopefully becomes that guy but it's rare young or inexperience pairings win things.

Got to be Sandro, he was linked by credible sources early on.

Interesting, I wonder if Matic can play in CB as a back 3 and has he ever placed there for Chelsea?

    ------Lindelof--Bailly---Matic

    Valencia---Fred---Andres----Shaw

    ---------------Pogba

    ----------Sanchez--Lukaku

Probably just individuals. I doubt he'd suddenly introduce some dramatic changes in main tactics and formation his 3rd season at the club. Usually managers put the tactics in from the start and bring in players that fit to make it work better. No doubt the board has fecked him over a bit, regardless of where people stand on Mourinho and his tactics themselves.

I'm sure ideally taking the last few windows into account he was hoping for something like:
    De Gea
    Valencia Alderweireld Bailly Sandro
    Fred Matic Pogba
    Willian Lukaku Perisic
Obviously the board wasn't willing to pay up for Perisic, Sarri replaced Conte at Chelsea so Willian stayed, and Spurs asked too much for Alderweireld. Probably a big impact for the board was that they didnt want to spend huge fees (60m for both Perisic and Alderweireld, 80m+ for Willian) when all are late 20s as well. Alex Sandro I'd bet that Juventus preferred to keep him anyway, especially after signing Ronaldo and looking to push for the CL.

He planned to get a bunch of the players he had hoped to get, he didn't. Now he's just getting on with the job.

Definitely no 5 at the back. He’s said multiple times that he’s only played 5 at the back to give the struggling CBs some extra support.

His ‘plans’ simply meant his transfer plans really. He has been very open about the positions he’s wanted to improve since Feburary

A quick fix that would be monies wasted on a player that we would have for maybe 2 years at most.

Who? Alderweireld? He’s 29 years old ffs. In 2 years time he’ll be a year younger than Godin is now!

That would be some team. Shame we couldn't get it over the line but I like our players and we have to work with what we have now. Pogba/Pereira/Fred is as close to a dynamic midfield as we've had in years.

Having said that, I think the plan was about having a back 4 that we could rely on and therefore be able to play more offensively.

Jose's dream team if allowed it:

    Sanchez-Lukaku-Willian

    Pogba-Matic-Fred

    Sandro-Bailly-Alderweireld-Valencia/Dalot

    De Gea

All things considered, team wouldn't have improved greatly anyway bar Sandro who might have given us something at LB. I doubt Willian will make a huge difference and as for Toby, I think we can get by on Bailly-Lindelof-Smalling rotation if the midfield and attack is good enough.

Not sure how Perisic would have fit in.

It's interesting that so many people continue to think Mourinho has a secret plan to switch to 3 at the back, and that this plan has hinged on signing one particular player 2 years in a row now and having not signed this player the formation just cannot be adopted.

And this is all based on largely misinterpreted comments from 12 months ago and a few pre-season line-ups.

I seem to remember Castles mentioning it in one of his articles, that Jose was considering using Matic as a CB, I assume in a three.

I don't know what the plan was, but I do know that it was a cunning plan. A plan so cunning you could put a tail on it, and call it a weasel.

To keep us competitive while rebuilding a mess of a team? The last 2 years have seen improvement although it's been slow and the football has been poor.

Only the most cunning of plans would enable us to beat the all conquering MCFC and their expensive team of superstars.
Jose would've known this and so would've concocted something so devious and cunning that nobody on this forum would ever fathom the level of cunning, Jose was intending to use.
And who knows, Jose may have codenamed his plan: THE WEASEL.

    You must be new here.
On this forum, a player is great when they are 18 years old and they must be automatic starters. They reach their prime at 22. And they need to be sold when they hit 27.
On this forum, to even think of buying a 29 year old, is heresy.

It's always going to be inevitable to have individuals make ridiculous claims in an open forum but this repeated 'joke' is getting quite tiresome and not funny when this kept begin mentioned.

fyi - this isn't directed at you by the way.

Don't think it was change of formation. He used both, a 433 and 352 during pre season, and the signing of Fred and rumours of wanting Willian suggests he wanted to continue with a 433, with a 352 always an option, if needed.

Rojo is apparently up for sale too, which meant if we'd have got a centre back, we'd have got rid of him, leaving us with the same amount of centre backs (five).

Think when Mourinho spoke about his plan, he's just talking about the players he wanted to see. He said he had a list of five players. Unfortunately, he ended up with three out of five. If rumours are to be believed, the other two players were a centre back and right winger.

Like us on the forum, we write down a team and formation we'd possibly like to see. I believe Mourinho's would have been along the lines of:

    Lukaku
    Sanchez Willian
    Pogba Matic Fred
    Young Alderwiereld Bailly Valencia
    De Gea

Going forward, it all depends how our players perform. Before the start of the season, most, including myself, said we needed at least four players to strengthen our side.

    Left back
    Right back
    Right winger
    Centre back

The players currently occupying those positions are Mata/Lingard, Valencia/Dalot, Young/Shaw and Lindelof.

With Valencia and Young being 34 by the start of next season, you'd expect those to be replaced. Again, it all depends on how Shaw and Dalot do this season, though. If they step up, then we'd need to just sign a back up, as oppsoed to a starting full back.

Mata/Lingard are not really right wingers. This is a position we heavily need to invest in, in my opinion.

If Lindelof steps up, as I said with Shaw and Dalot, then we won't need a starting centre back. Instead we may look to get rid of some back up defenders and bring in a young centre back with potential like Mourinho did with Dalot.

And god forbid if they've ever had an injury of longer than 6 weeks, might as well forget it. No, they should be 18-24 (and if 24, it is advisable they theyre the best player in the world in that position), if Pep wouldn't sign them, don't want em. If they've played at another big club, don't want em. The rules are quite easy to follow really.

Jesus, every single year we need to 'buy' 4 players to strengthen the side. I dread to think what that does for the morale of our youth team. What is the youth team for may I ask?

Well Pogba, Andreas, Rashford and Mctominay all played Friday and were all products of our academy. Lingard will feature too when he's fit.

5 isn't a bad number. No other top team does this.

I'm sure the morale of the youth team is fine when they see Pereira and Rashford starting against Leicester, McTominay coming in as a sub after having been selected for key fixtures last season and Lingard getting plenty of minutes last few seasons, all of that under Jose.

To provide players for the first team. Fletcher, O'Shea, Pogba, Lingard, Brown, Cleverley, Welbeck, Rashford, Evans, the Pereiras and McTominay within the last decade. Yeah I'm fudging a bit with some of them but they were in their prime in the last decade.

We are three players short in theory.

A full back, centre back and right winger.

An argument can be made that we have the players here though and can easily do without if they step up. For instance Shaw and Dalot could become our pair of attacking full backs, Bailly and Lindelof our season long pairing in the middle and Martial/Rashford/Sanchez shuffle around up top and finally make the right side their own.

That's what's annoying really. We aren't actually players short, we have a quite capable squad IMO.

    My hunch, with 3 players:

    -----------------de Gea--------------------
    Valencia---Bailly---Alderweireld---Sandro
    -----------Fred---Matic---Pogba----------
    Willian/Perisic--------------------Sanchez
    ------------------Lukaku------------------

    With 2 players:

    -----------------de Gea--------------------
    Valencia---Bailly---Alderweireld---Sandro
    -----------Fred---Matic---Pogba----------
    Lingard/Mata--------------------Sanchez
    ------------------Lukaku------------------

    With 1 player:

    -----------------de Gea--------------------
    Valencia---Bailly---Alderweireld---Young
    -----------Fred---Matic---Pogba----------
    Lingard/Mata--------------------Sanchez
    ------------------Lukaku------------------

Dropping to a back 3 when he wants to nullify an attacking side.
