There was plenty of flux in terms of first team selections last season. Do you think you think you can guess what Mourinho is thinking in light of our transfers (both failed and successful)?

Lingard as a first XI fixture? Martial getting a reprieve? Rashford on the right? A diamond to counteract our lack of natural width? 5-3-2?

Dave Valencia bailly smalling young matic Fred pogs Jesse alexis rom. 442 diamond with Jesse at point of it. Not a bad team bar the rb and lb slots. We have to play the football to suit the players though. Can't go out with that team and want to sit in and let other team have more of the ball.

    DDG
    Valencia - Bailly - Smalling - Young
    Matic
    Fred - Pogba
    Lingard - Lukaku - Sanchez

Nothing else really. No surprises around.

    Probably:

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Lindelöf Young
    Fred Matic Pogba
    Mata Lukaku Alexis

    Would be interesting to try:

    DDG
    Lindelöf Matic Bailly
    Valencia------------------Shaw
    Andres
    Fred--------Pogba
    Alexis
    Lukaku

Interesting idea. Converting an aging (relatively) player like Matic into a defensive position like we did with Valencia. Could it work? We probably already played him there and I just forgot.

Matic at CB makes sense only if we go with three at the back. In that case, only Pogba and Fred in CM, Lingard or someone else as AM and the two strikers. Playing with 5 CBs and 3 midfielders essentially means no goals. To be fair, Matic, Lindeloff and Smalling/Bailly in CB isn't that bad considering that both Matic and Lindeloff are very good passers.

But I think it will be 4 at the back with whoever plays better plays, Pogba, Fred and Matic in midfield, Sanchez in the left, open for all in the right and Lukaku up front.

Or Jose decides to teach Ed a lesson and plays a misfits team mixed with kids, while leaving Pogba and Martial out of the team. Then he proceeds by hitting the physio for taking Phil Jones out of the pitch after he gets injured.

Just an idea, think he's played there a few times when we've been chasing games late on, and Mourinho has suggested he could play there as well, though I wouldn't fancy him there away at City, Liverpool and Tottenham, but for most Home games he'd be fine, probably

Not sure about Matic at CB. Fergie got oddly attached to the idea of making Carrick a CB and it was a disaster.

Let the square pegs go in the square holes.

LvG did it for an entire season with Blind.

My major worry would be about Matic's aerial ability.

We haven't had a settled first team in years.

    So I have no clue.

    De Gea
    Bailly Smalling Matic Lindelof
    Fred Pogba

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Bailly Young
    Matic
    Fred......Pogba
    Sanchez
    Lukaku......Rashford
The formation will basically be a combination of 442/352/433 depending on the situation. Matic will drop deep acting as almost a third center back. Fred and Pogba the box to box midfielders. Sanchez, Lukaku & Rashford the three attacking players with Sanchez withdraw from the other two and acting as a conduit between the midfield and the attack Rooney style. In effect:

    De Gea
    Smalling Matic Bailly
    Valencia Fred Pogba Young
    Sanchez
    Lukaku............Rashford

Probably won't be a settled XI. The only guaranteed starters will be De Gea, Smalling, Valencia, Young, Matic, Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku. We'll rotate the rest three positions based on injuries, form and the manager's mood.

    I'd like to see

    ---------------------------DDG-----------------------------
    Dalot---------Lindelof---Bailly-----------Young
    --------------------Matic/Periera--------------------
    -----------------Fred----------------Pogba-----------
    Sanchez-----------Lukaku------------Martial

regardless of line-up though we need to play faster and with better movement

at times last year only Lingard made intelligent runs and we looked stodgy in attack

We can field that team in a couple of weeks and apparently the reason they won't be able to string a pass together is because we didn't buy somebody last night. Only a fraud would stunt that team sheet.

I'd like us to test the Real Madrid style 4-4-2 diamond some time this season. With our midfield being the strongest area of our team and lack of right winger or any real wingers. We might as well take advantage of our midfield strength. Only problem would be lack of rotation in midfield.

    De Gea
    Dalot Bailly Lindelof Shaw
    Matic
    Periera Fred
    Pogba
    Lukaku Sanchez

    Another one to try:

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Smalling Shaw
    Pogba Periera Fred
    Lukaku Sanchez Martial

This second one looks very very good on paper. The conditions are there to play attacking football. With Lukaku on the right but interchanging with Sanchez who plays as false 9 and Martial holding width on the left we can score some goals.

    ------------De Gea

    Valencia Bailly Smalling Young

    -------------Matic
    -----Fred---------- Pogba

    Lingard -------------- Sanchez
    -----------Lukaku

I'd prefer if we went for a 3/5 at the back formation though to accomodate for our lack of a right winger and average fullbacks. Also, both Sanchez and Rom and our centre backs look much better in this formation, particularly Lindelof.

Jones and Shaw very clearly don't belong in that team sheet. They are the two players there who just seem so out of place to me. Can you imagine if Ed Woodward was competent and actually went out and got us a centre back and a left back?

Our first team will be the same as the team Jose played since January, except for McTominay he will use Fred. Tactics and game plan will be the same, we are in for another season of dire, defensive, slow football with few goals and chances created, unless someone breaks ranks and decides to take the team by the scruff of its neck and goes out and attacks. It will only happen once as Jose will bench that players for the foreseeable future.

I’d expect us to start with (subject to injuries):

    DDG

    Valencia
    Smalling
    Jones
    Young

    Matic
    Fred
    Pogba

    Lingard
    Lukaku
    Sanchez

Or we could play Lindelof who Mourinho chose to buy last year over Maguire when he didn't cost a ludicrous sum of money?

    Martial Lukaku Sanchez
    Pogba Matic Fred
    Young Smalling Bailly Valencia
    De Gea

    I hope to see this.

    1. Sanchez is by far the most likely player in our squad to give us something from the right wing. Any team without him there looks stupid.
    2. If Dalot is good then give him games over Valencia asap.
    3. If Pereira maintains his pre-season form then give him games so Matic doesn't get run into the ground like last season.

Good enough for top 4 imo.

We could try a 352 or 4312 formation to get the best of our players. We have fantastic options in midfield and quality forwards.

    De Gea
    Dalot - Bailly - Lindelof - Shaw
    Fred - Matic - Pogba
    Lingard
    Lukaku - Sanchez
Or Sanchez as a 10 behind Martial/Rashford and Lukaku.
