Was listening to the second captains podcast earlier where it was argued that David Silva is possibly the most overrated player in the history of the premier league.

Leaving that specific example aside, which PL legend do you think is the most overrated?

Seeing as VVD is already considered equal to Vidic, Terry and Rio by plenty on here, I'm going to say him.

I'm gonna pretty much take Gerrard as read so feel free to throw in a second suggestion if he's your first choice.

Has anybody mentioned Gerrard yet? Because if not, Gerrard. If yes, Gerrard.

If people are bored of Gerrard, then maybe Joe Hart

I'd argue that Gerrard was very important to his team and therefore not overrated. Imagine where Liverpool would have been without him.

Still a cnut, though. Don't get me wrong.

I don't think so, so I'll be the first to nominate him.

2nd is tougher. I don't want to dominate current players as they can still prove themselves so after Gerrard I think perhaps that Lampard would be my next choice. He was a brilliant player, scored a ton of goals and everything but I feel he wasn't quite as good as Slippy.

United - Rooney - 2 quality seasons as our talisman. A brilliant 2nd in command behind Ronaldo & RVP. (No shame in that)

Liverpool - Gerrard - no explanation needed

Chelsea - Terry - people would have you believe he was best of all time. Was always rated higher than Rio & Vidic

City - Hart (pre 2016) I think all their current top players are rated fairly.

    Arsenal - no idea.

Thought it about it for few minutes then realized they would have been in the same spot anyway.

Mental to suggest it IMO. Brilliant player but probably too much of an artistic player for the likes that prefer a blood and guts midfielder.

I honestly don't like those type of threads of suggestions as it's disrespectful to the players and negative but if I can nominate a Liverpool player who also happens to be a self absorbed bellend then I am ok for them.

You accuse Rooney of having only 2 good seasons and then mention RvP. Seriously?

Weird post. They hardly achieved anything with Stevie Me making it all about him. They’d have done better without him.

Really? I doubt they'd have made any appearances in the CL and probably have finished slightly worse in the league regularly (10-12th positions).

Nice suggestion given he's recently been dropped by Burnley (who then immediately improved defensively).

Some really biased discussion thus far. Gerrard is highly rated as a player and deservedly so - I don’t see him overrated in relation to his EPL reputation - no one ever puts him as high as Henry, Ronaldo, Shearer or even likes of Scholes etc so his reputation isn’t overinflated IMO. His reputation in the game is based on his overall career and exploits such as Europe.

Terry is an outstanding CB and deserves to have reputation he does too.

As for David Silva - absolutely batshit crazy to criticise such a consistently outstanding midfielder whose been pivotal in many league wins.

They still didn't win the league with or without him. Actually his only memorable achievement there was 2005 CL but the rest are pretty hard to remember without Googling it. Some minor cups here and there.

He can be a legend for them for all I care but I find it pretty hard to consider him a football or PL legend in general.

He was pretty influential in what they did achieve (even if it was by diving to win penalties). It's whataboutism but without Gerrard I think they'd have got nothing from the 2000s.

To be fair only six teams have won the PL. Still, I think he was massively important to Liverpool remaining just barely relevant in the 2000s.

I wouldn't have said Lampard is particularly overrated. I mean he is Chelsea's top scorer of all time, which is pretty good for a midfielder. I also don't think he's actually rated that highly really. I mean I suspect most people would rate him behind Gerrard for example, whereas I'd sooner have Lampard in my team.

That's not an excuse for a supposedly big team to be that irrelevant in it for so long imo.

Rated by who though? Supporters/football followers or the media?

Rooney by the media. About 2 genuine top seasons from him over the years and never 'the man' at United no matter what the media might claim.

Joe Hart an obvious one by the media too.

Not getting into the Stevie G shite - he's definitely not top bracket like some like to make out.

I'm sure there's others I can't think of right now.

That they were just barely relevant has a lot to do with Gerrard.
